Chapter 158: Frayed Threads

The call ended abruptly, and Sophia knew her son had hung up. Easton was now a bachelor, and the daughter-in-law sheโ€™d half-adopted was out of the picture. In her urgency, she called Carly, asking, โ€œCarly, did you know Ellis and Easton are divorced?โ€

While undergoing a facial, Carly peeled back part of her mask around her ears and responded nonchalantly, โ€œMadam Sophia, yes, Iโ€™m aware. They separated last week.โ€

Sophiaโ€™s face darkened slightly. โ€œYou knew and you didnโ€™t tell me immediately?โ€

โ€œI thought Easton would tell you.โ€

โ€œThat little rascal didnโ€™t say a word! Why didnโ€™t you stop them?โ€

โ€œMadam Sophia, you must be joking. How could I possibly intervene? Easton doesnโ€™t even see me as an elder. He froze my assets; I nearly had to beg on the streets.โ€ Carly was already busy thinking about how to use her connections to find a suitable remarriage prospect for Ellis, having given up on stopping the divorce a long time ago.

He did that to keep Ellis quiet and stop her from pushing for a divorce, Sophia said, her confidence waning.

It seemed to Sophia that Easton had hedged about not interfering between him and Ellis, seizing the moment to finalize the divorce without her noticing.

โ€œMadam Sophia, whatโ€™s done is done. We shouldnโ€™t meddle in our childrenโ€™s marriages,โ€ Carly said as she removed her mask and wiped her face with a soft tissue. โ€œTime for my beauty sleep, good night.โ€

โ€œWait, donโ€™t hang up!โ€ Sophia commanded.

โ€œMadam Sophia, what else do you want to discuss?โ€

โ€œOur kids arenโ€™t thinking straight; we need to help them see clearly and find a way to get them back together.โ€

โ€œNo, no, no!โ€ Carly was greatly alarmed. โ€œEaston is just my nephew, and thatโ€™s fine. A different son-in-law would be better.โ€

Carly couldnโ€™t stand having a son-in-law like Easton, someone who could easily control her destiny. Moreover, she respected Ellisโ€™s wish not to prioritize money. Ellis disliked men who were indecisive and preferred a devoted partner. Carly was putting thought into finding someone financially stable and faithful for Ellis.

โ€œCarly, have you lost your mind? Replacing your son-in-law might not get you someone better than Easton.โ€

โ€œMadam Sophia, enough. I firmly oppose Easton being my son-in-law again. Iโ€™m already looking for a remarriage candidate for Ellis and have asked friends to introduce someone.โ€

Regardless of what Sophia had left unsaid, Carly hung up and immediately turned off her phone. It was the second call sheโ€™d been hung up on today. Sophia originally wanted to call Ellis next.

Thinking it over, given that the divorce was recent, Ellis would likely share her sonโ€™s reluctance to remarry. She redialed her sonโ€™s number.

Ultimately, he was her own flesh and blood. Easton thought about not answering, but finally swiped to take the call, his lips pressed tightly. โ€œMom, Iโ€™m not getting back together. Donโ€™t try to persuade me, and donโ€™t go persuading Ellis either!โ€

โ€œFine, I wonโ€™t push either of you! But just so you know, Carly has started looking for remarriage prospects for Ellis. Donโ€™t wait until Ellis remarries and then regret it when itโ€™s too late,โ€ Sophia said, out of patience with her son.

Easton had made Ellis sign a prenuptial agreement that would leave her with nothing if they divorced, a drastic measure to dissuade her from divorcing. This led Ellis to seek out Sophia in tears, and now Carly would rather find a new son-in-law than let her own son fill that role again.

The situation was tense and awkward. She didnโ€™t want to manage her sonโ€™s marriage anymore. If Easton chose to treat Ellisโ€ฆ

โ€œI will never regret it. Itโ€™s Ellis who might need to,โ€ Easton declared. In nearly thirty years of life, he had never regrettedโ€ฆ

Yet, hearing that Carly was selecting a new partner for Ellis was slightly irksome. Carly had previously said not to delay Ellis in finding another man to marry. It had been less than a month since he and Ellis had divorced, and Carly hadnโ€™t wasted any time.

With Carlyโ€™s capabilities, finding a man with an overall better package than him was unlikely. Not to brag, but whether it was family background, appearance, or abilities, he had no shortcomings.

Given Ellisโ€™s materialistic nature, she would struggle to accept a man without substantial assets. And it wasnโ€™t just about money; she had other requirements too.

He was curious to see what kind of remarriage prospect Carly could find for Ellis and how much effort she would put in. Would they end up making a mockery of themselves?

Eastonโ€™s tone alone was infuriating. Sophia forcefully ended the call. She was meddling, and no one appreciated it. Enough was enough. They have their own luck!

This time Sophia hung up the phone, and Easton was indifferent. He settled his phone down, adjusted his pillow, and lay down comfortably in bed. Insomnia didnโ€™t mean he couldnโ€™t sleep at all. He tried to cultivate sleepiness, and within half an hour, thanks to the melatonin he had taken and his own efforts, sleep gradually took over, and Easton drifted off.
