Chapter 167: WhatsApp Texts

The driver also spotted Ellis. After she got into the car and left, he couldn’t help but say, “Mr. Hudson, Mrs. Hudson was just there.” The last time he had seen Ellis was at Dynasty Estate. She was clinging to the wall like a slow-moving spider, inching her way down toward the ground. It was an incredibly dangerous situation. Back then, Easton only stood frozen as he silently watched her. The driver was right beside him, not daring to make a sound, afraid that any sudden movement might startle Ellis and cause her to fall.

Now, after speaking, he carefully observed Easton. He had misspoken earlier. Easton didn’t look the same back then as he did now. At that time, there had been no trace of the subtle yet inexplicable sense of loss he was giving off now. Instead, his expression had been filled with worry and anger.

Hearing the driver’s words, Easton didn’t respond. He simply got into the car. Before he stepped in, the driver hesitated for a moment and glanced at Taylor, as if seeking help. In a way, he and Taylor were in similar roles, both responsible for attending to Easton’s needs. Their interests and allegiances aligned, which meant information could be exchanged when necessary, especially if it benefited them. But right now, Taylor had nothing to trade. She only realized one thing… Easton had never corrected anyone around him when they referred to Ellis as “Mrs. Hudson.” Did that mean calling Ellis “Ms. Harper” in front of Mr. Hudson is inappropriate?

After sneaking back home, Ellis had barely lain down when her phone buzzed with a text that read, “Did you run into Easton?” The sender was an unfamiliar number with no saved name. She thought for a moment. The only person who would ask such a pointless question was Morty. He had called her once before and even added her on WhatsApp. She forgot to block him. Too lazy to reply, she was about to block his number when another message popped up. “Are you still at the hotel where the banquet was held?”

Why is he asking so many questions? Does he have nothing better to do? Just as she was halfway through blocking him, a third message came in. “Madam Lois just told me you left early.” Ellis rolled her eyes at her screen. This guy was ridiculous. He was literally having a conversation with himself! He sent another message, “Reply to me. I have an important document for you to go through.” There he went again, trying to get her to reply. What is Morty up to?

At first, she assumed he was helping Victoria get back at her for slapping her by deliberately making her life difficult. But Morty hadn’t actually done anything to target her. If anything, he just seemed like a bored, childish schoolboy looking for something to do. She replied, “What important information? If it’s important, why don’t you email me? Don’t you know how to send an email? Are you stupid?”

Maybe she had been fooled by Morty’s recent politeness, but she wasn’t too worried about him trying to bully or trouble her. After all, the collaboration between the Tate Group and the Nexus Group was still in its early stages. She figured she should not be too mean to him. And knowing Morty, he probably cared about his image too. He replied, “Fine, I’ll email it to you.”

2:38 PM

Morty stopped messaging and sent the documents to her inbox.

Email was an essential tool for any office worker. Ellis had an app on her phone for it, and as soon as she saw the notification, she clicked in. As he had claimed, it really was important information, something far beyond the reach of someone at her level. She didn’t even have the logical framework in her mind to fully grasp it, making it difficult to read through.

After going through the documents, she realized that the longer she worked at the Tate Group, the clearer it became how elementary her previous work at the Hudson Group had been. She had barely scratched the surface of the Hudson Group’s business operations, whereas at the Tate Group, Lois had given her not just financial rewards but also new insights and perspectives. She was gradually building her own business knowledge. She was truly growing. Unlike before, when she had spent all her time orbiting around Easton, gaining nothing of real value.

A mature adult knew how to weigh the pros and cons. In the presence of someone who could benefit her, certain personal feelings, whether likes or dislikes, could be temporarily set aside. After thinking it over, Ellis reluctantly agreed to text Morty via WhatsApp. At the end of the day, the documents he had sent were useful for her career. If he had the ability to provide value and wanted to add her, there was no harm in it.

Morty clicked into her WhatsApp profile picture and saw that it was just a picture of a British Shorthair cat. He tried to stalk her Instagram page, but she didn’t post anything. She wasn’t someone who liked sharing on social media. Wait, she likes cats? He was curious.
