Chapter 168: Instagram Post
Has she ever posted lovey-dovey pictures on Instagram? Did she ever show off her daily life with Easton? Or did she delete everything about Easton from her Instagram after their divorce?
Thinking about it carefully, she didn’t seem like the type to flaunt her relationship. Suddenly, he lost interest.
After adding Morty on WhatsApp, Ellis went to wash up soon after. She had no idea that Morty was snooping through her WhatsApp and Instagram, or why he would even bother.
Back when she held the title of Mrs. Hudson, she was already eye-catching enough in real life. Even the smallest thing about her could spark endless gossip and become a hot topic over tea. To her, social media accounts were purely for communication. She never posted about her personal life.
And now, she still saw no need to. First, she didn’t like sharing her private life on public platforms. Second, she was too lazy to post. She also didn’t want people speculating about her based on what she shared.
An hour later, after finishing her nighttime routine, Ellis lay back in bed and picked up her phone. At the top of her WhatsApp chat list, Maya had sent several messages: “Our firm officially signed the Nexus Group as a client for the next two quarters! That shady guy’s company! What are the odds?”
Maya worked at one of the Round Scarlet Law Firms. There were only eight of them nationwide. In the legal industry, they were the best of the best, and their clients were almost always high-net-worth individuals or major corporations.
The Nexus Group becoming a Round Scarlet Law Firm’s client wasn’t surprising. Ellis wasn’t shocked at all. She replied, “What a coincidence!”
Maya immediately fired off more messages: “This deal is mine! Next month’s bonus is gonna make me cry with joy!”
Bringing in new clients and maintaining them was part of a lawyer’s job. Ellis knew Maya had client quotas to meet.
Has Maya really landed The Nexus Group’s contract all by herself? Surprised, Ellis asked, “How did you manage to close the deal?”
Maya felt like the luckiest person alive. At first, she had no hope of signing the Nexus Group. Big corporations usually had powerful in-house legal teams. Even when they worked with external law firms, they only selected top-tier Round Scarlet Law Firms and rarely changed them. If word got out that they were switching firms, every other Round Scarlet firm would swarm in like sharks smelling blood.
Since the Round Scarlet firms were all on equal footing, and there were only so many big clients to go around, they would do whatever it took to secure a contract.
Last month, there were rumors that the Nexus Group was considering switching firms. Maya’s firm looked into it but thought the rumors were false. They casually assigned Maya to follow up, assuming nothing would come of it. But as soon as she reached out to the Nexus Group’s legal department, they immediately extended an olive branch.
Apparently, they had already set their sights on Maya’s firm. They had just been waiting for someone to reach out so they could seal the deal.
With the contract signed and the deal secured, Maya was now just counting down the days until her bonus arrived. She was already planning to treat her mom and friends to a fancy meal.
“I didn’t do anything. It was pure luck,” Maya texted, giddy with excitement.
But luck was a skill too, especially having the ability to capitalize on it. Ellis smiled as she was happy for her. “Congrats! You’re one step closer to being rich!”
She sent Maya a hundred dollars as a little celebratory gift.
“I never thought I’d land the Nexus Group, especially after that time we went drinking and I pissed off Morty.” Maya was still amazed at her own good fortune.
The Nexus Group wasn’t a business empire, but it was still a significant player. While Morty wasn’t the one in charge, he was the CEO’s nephew and held company shares. He was part of the executive decision-making team.
Most likely, Morty had no involvement in the legal affairs. If he did, there was no way Maya would’ve gotten the deal.
2:38 PM
“Well, he’s technically our company’s partner now! The funny thing is, he hasn’t been acting shady lately, and I haven’t seen any signs of him trying to get revenge on me for slapping Victoria. He actually seems… normal?” Ellis thought for a moment before adding, “Still talks trash occasionally, though.”
“Normal is good, but stay careful,” Maya reminded her.
“Yeah, if things go south, I’ll just run.” Ellis wasn’t worried about escaping Morty. Compared to him, Easton was the real headache. At least Morty could bring her some benefits. But Easton? Nothing but bad luck.
After chatting with Maya for a while, she went to bed in a great mood.
The next morning, her alarm woke her up on time. During her daily commute, Ellis liked to scroll through Instagram to pass the time.
As she was mindlessly scrolling, a notification popped up at the top of her screen. It was a new message from Morty: “Go like my first Instagram post.”
