Chapter 193: Reward
A mere employee was no match for a major business partner. If an employee displeased a collaborator, especially one as significant as Morty, and the partner openly demanded their dismissal, then dismissed they would be. No questions asked. The boss wouldnโt even bat an eye.
โMadam Lois, Iโฆโ Amelia did not expect to get fired just for trying to get close to Morty. She quickly approached Lois to beg for mercy.
As Loisโs personal assistant, Ellis naturally would not allow Amelia to bother Lois. She went to Amelia, stopped her, and then asked the security guards to escort her out of the hotel.
Lois then turned to Morty with a hint of embarrassment. โSorry about that, Mr. Morty. My employee did not know any better.โ
โItโs fine as long as you laid her off. No big deal.โ When Morty was speaking, he seemed to glance at Ellis from the corner of his eye.
This jerk wouldnโt try to ask Lois to fire me, would he? Seriously, what did I do to deserve this! I just wanna hold onto this high-paying job for a little longer. First, Easton has already cost me one job, and now Morty is pulling the same stunt?
Ellis closed her eyes helplessly.
However, it seemed like Morty knew what she was thinking. He spoke up, โMs. Harper, donโt worry. I wonโt have Madam Lois fire you.โ
A teasing yet mocking remark came from him, and Ellis felt like she had hit her quota of awkward moments for the day. Seriously, can the universe give me a break?
โI just canโt stand people like Ms. Amelia, always scheming instead of actually working. She acts like sheโs the smartest person in the room, thinking everyone else is an idiot who canโt see through her intentions.โ Morty had encountered plenty of people like Amelia before. It only took one interaction for him to figure out exactly what kind of person she was.
Ellis had no comment about Ameliaโs intentions; she only had one thought. If Morty made her lose her job, she would probably beat the shit out of him.
โMs. Harper, donโt you think Ms. Amelia has ill intentions?โ Morty just had to look for words of affirmation.
Ellis could only simply reply, โPossibly.โ
โItโs not possible. Itโs definite.โ Morty stepped closer, standing beside Ellis and glancing down at her. โMs. Harper, youโve worked with her for a while. Hopefully, you havenโt picked up any of her bad habits?โ
Ellis was speechless. Amelia had annoyed him, not her. Why was he dragging her into this!
โYouโฆโ She took a deep breath, restraining the urge to curse him out.
Then, Morty cut her off by saying, โWait, you wouldnโt be easily influenced as youโre not someone with ill intentions. To me, youโre someone with integrity and morals.โ
What the hell? He can just shut up instead of being sarcastic. Ellis replied with a fake smile on her face, โHm, youโre one with integrity as well.โ
โIntegrity.โ Heโd better shut up now, or else Iโm gonna smack him.
โThen next time be smarter; when you see someone like that trying to get close to me, help me, aight?โ Morty paused, then continued, โYou will be rewarded.โ
Ellis finally realized it; Morty was blaming her for not doing anything just now.
But seriously? She wasnโt working for him, so why did she have to serve him and satisfy him?
โMs. Harper, I donโt think youโd reject money, would you?โ Morty asked with a smile playing on his lips. It was as if he was sure she would agree to it.
Chapter 193: Reward.
Speaking, she tilted her head slightly as she stared at Morty, signaling him to stop.
They were in public. If she couldnโt help herself and started bantering with him, it would become a topic of gossip. Although nobody would be so foolish as to gossip in front of them, prevention was better than cure.
Morty did not say anything and finally walked away.
After enough rest, Ellis prepared to hail a cab back to the company. However, she bumped into Morty at the entrance of the hotel lobby.
Morty spoke up. โIโm going to your company, so itโs on the way. Wanna hitch a ride with me?โ
Ellis initially wanted to ignore him, but out of courtesy, she replied, โIโll go back myself.โ
โA free ride right in front of you, yet youโd rather waste money on a cab? And it wouldnโt even be as comfortable as my car. Ms. Harper, do the math.โ Morty glanced around before adding, โBesides, Iโm not going out of my way to give you a ride. I just figured we could discuss work on the way and save some time.โ
โFine.โ Ellis finally got into Mortyโs car.
Inside, she found herself seated beside him in the back, the space between them not particularly wide. But she didnโt feel uncomfortable because she reminded herself that Morty was a business partner. For now, she would block out his annoying and shameless side.
And to his credit, when he said he wanted to talk about work, he actually did.
