Chapter 207: Unexpected Encounters and Hidden Truths
Mayaโs tone turned serious, demanding an explanation as if she were a detective handling a public dispute.
Easton subtly furrowed his brows, his sharp gaze narrowing. โAre you sure Ellis isnโt with you? Put her on the phone.โ
โSheโs not here. Whatever it is, you can tell me,โ Maya said, wondering if sending the video to Easton had been a mistake. After seeing Victoriaโs true colors, shouldnโt Easton be confronting her instead of going after Ellis?
โHer faceโฆ is it alright?โ Easton asked coolly.
The unexpected question caught Maya and Ellis off guard. They exchanged glances, each spotting a flicker of surprise in the otherโs eyes.
After a brief pause, Maya let out a confused, โWait, what?โ
โI canโt offer you an explanation,โ Easton said flatly. โAll I can say is that Victoria will face the consequences she deserves.โ
โWait, what?โ Mayaโs second โwhatโ sounded even more baffled than the first.
Ellis was just as confused. If she hadnโt been pretending not to be with Maya, she would have asked Easton directly what he meant. The whole point of sending the video to Easton was to mess with him a little, letting him see just how drastically Victoria had changed, not to hear him seriously say that Victoria would get what was coming to her. Besides, what kind of punishment was Victoria supposed to get, and from whom? What the hell was that scumbag even talking about?
Before they could make sense of it, the call ended. Maya turned to face Ellis, gently patting her bewildered face. โDo you understand what Easton meant?โ
โNot a clue,โ Ellis replied, snapping the lid back onto her skincare jar. โWhatever. Forget that scumbag and his sidepiece. Letโs just get some sleep.โ
As far as she was concerned, the goal had been achieved. Easton hadnโt shown much reaction, and she had avoided even indirect contact with her ex-husband.
โIโll head to bed early too,โ Maya said with a stretch before heading back to her room.
Lying in bed, Ellis instinctively scrolled through her phone, a routine she used to lull herself to sleep. Once she felt drowsy, she tucked her phone under her pillow, cleared her mind, and quickly drifted off into a deep sleep.
On his way home, Easton couldnโt resist replaying the video of Victoria slapping Ellis over and over again. Each time he watched, different emotions stirred within him, but one feeling remained constant. No matter how bad Ellisโs temper had been, no matter how many times she lashed out at him in frustration, he had never once raised a hand in return. He had never once fought back, so what right did Victoria have to lay a hand on her?
The car slowly came to a stop in the open space in front of the main entrance of Sunshine Estates. Ronnie turned his head toward Easton in the back seat and reminded him, โMr. Hudson, weโre here.โ
After speaking, Ronnie promptly stepped out of the car and opened the rear door.
Easton stared ahead, unsure of what was on his mind. It was supposed to be a straightforward ride home, yet somewhere along the way, he had a sudden change of heart, almost as if on impulse, and told Ronnie to stop by Sunshine Estates first.
The video clearly showed a timestamp, indicating that Victoria had hit Ellis earlier today.
Chapter 207: Unexpected Encounters and Hidden Truths
Easton remained still, his expression dark and unreadable, making it impossible for anyone to guess what was on his mind. Ronnie stood by the open car door, maintaining his stance and pretending not to speculate about Eastonโs thoughts, just sticking to his duty.
Moments passed, and seeing Easton still seated in the car, Ronnie hesitated, unsure whether to speak up.
Just then, a pair of long, straight legs stepped onto the pavement, one after the other. A tall, lean figure cast a shadow across Ronnieโs line of sight. Realizing it was Easton stepping out of the car, Ronnie quietly moved aside, watching as Easton walked into Sunshine Estates until he disappeared from view.
Having been to Sunshine Estates a few times before, Easton knew exactly where Ellisโs unit was. The door was firmly shut, but a faint glow spilled out from the gap at the bottom, a clear sign that Ellis was home.
Recalling the last time he had entered her unit without a word, ended up sleeping in her bed, and woke up to her angrily punching his chest, Easton figured sheโd be even angrier tonight if he tried anything similar. This time, he played it safe and rang the doorbell.
To his surprise, the door opened almost immediately. He hadnโt expected Ellis to answer so quickly; heโd assumed heโd have to ring a few more times.
He lifted his gaze from the floor, expecting to see the familiar, delicate face of Ellis. But instead, a completely unfamiliar young man looked back at him. His brow furrowed in confusion.
Why was there a guy in Ellisโs unit? What kind of relationship does this young man have with Ellis? Her aunt was so efficient, almost too efficient, that she quickly introduced Ellis to a suitable candidate for her โsecond spring.โ After they hit it off, did he move in with her? Or did he start spending the night at her place?
The young man facing Easton, James Walker, looked at him with confusion. Someone was ringing his doorbell late at night, someone clearly wealthy, dressed in a suit, and carrying an air of high status. He seemed completely out of place, like he didnโt belong in this neighborhood at all.
