Chapter 250: Regifting the Regal

โ€œYour birth year seems jinxed; maybe we should hit up a church and find someone professional to sort out your problem?โ€ Maya was at a loss for how to help her friend and resorted to the idea of seeking some metaphysical guidance.

โ€œOr I could just put Victoria and Eastonโ€™s names on a dartboard and throw darts at them!โ€ Ellis felt this method would be more effective than Mayaโ€™s suggestion and certainly a lot quicker.

โ€œGreat! Iโ€™ll find the materials, and you look up how to make them online!โ€

โ€œWait, are you serious?โ€ Seeing Maya ready to spring into action, Ellis quickly intervened. โ€œLetโ€™s not.โ€

Maya sat back down beside Ellis. โ€œIf not that, then what?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m thinking of laying low in another city for a while.โ€ Maybe a short break from Stonebridge was what she needed. She could ask Lois for remote work permissions, maybe at a reduced salary, just to keep her position. That seemed like the best plan she could come up with.

โ€œBut seriously, if Morty can fall for you, is it really impossible that your ex might want to get back together with you?โ€ Maya frowned, revisiting the thought with a burst of imagination. โ€œHe did sneak into your house that one night and ended up in bed with you!โ€

โ€œNo way!โ€ Ellis flatly refused to follow Mayaโ€™s line of thinking, determined in her belief. โ€œHim sleeping in my bed was because of his insomnia.โ€

Even though she couldnโ€™t fathom why Eastonโ€™s insomnia would lead him to her bed, there was no way it meant he wanted to remarry.

Seeing Maya still deep in thought, Ellis interrupted, โ€œI need to take a bath.โ€ Her bath had been cut short by Maya earlier, and she felt unfinished.

With that, she got up and headed back into the bathroom. Maya, holding the diamond crown, decided she would personally deliver it to Hudson Group the next day.

The next morning in the lobby of Hudson Group, the receptionist eyed Maya suspiciously as she placed the item on the desk. โ€œIs this for Mr. Hudson? Whatโ€™s your relationship with him! Whatโ€™s in the box?โ€

โ€œJust tell Mr. Hudson that someone named Maya dropped it off; heโ€™ll know whatโ€™s in the box,โ€ Maya said, preparing to leave.

Given the crownโ€™s evident value, she was worried about it being lost and Easton making her pay for it, so she emphasized, โ€œMake sure it gets to Mr. Hudson personally. If itโ€™s lost, youโ€™re responsible.โ€

Hearing this, the receptionist, wary of being held accountable, suggested, โ€œIโ€™ll contact Mr. Hudsonโ€™s assistant for you. Maybe you can talk to her first?โ€ That way, she wouldnโ€™t be responsible if something went wrong.

Maya nodded in agreement. โ€œThat works.โ€

The receptionist made an internal call, and upon hearing Maya, Taylor immediately connected her with Ellisโ€™s best friend and hurried downstairs to meet her.

โ€œMs. Maya, hello! Youโ€™re a lawyer, right?โ€

Prompted by the receptionist, Maya realized Taylor was Eastonโ€™s assistant. Upon seeing her, Taylor seemed to already know about her profession, which puzzled Maya. I havenโ€™t revealed my job upon arriving, so how does she know!

With lots of work waiting and no time to waste, she quickly handed over the box containing the diamond crown.

โ€œHello, this is something for Mr. Hudson. Please return it to him for me,โ€ Maya said with a polite smile.

Considering the stakesโ€”after all, the position of the bossโ€™s wife ultimately belonged to Ellis, and her best friend shouldnโ€™t be treated lightlyโ€”it seemed prudent to handle the situation with care. Plus, Maya bringing something for Easton was likely related to Ellis and needed careful handling. Aware that the previous CEOโ€™s assistant had been fired, Taylor knew not to repeat the same mistakes.

Taylorโ€™s refusal to take the box herself and her suggestion to deliver it personally to Easton made sense, leaving Maya little room to object. She followed Taylor to Eastonโ€™s office.

When Maya suddenly appeared, holding the unmistakable diamond crown, Eastonโ€™s brows furrowed deeply.

โ€œMr. Hudson, Ellis asked me to return this to you, she doesnโ€™t want it,โ€ Maya said, placing the item on Eastonโ€™s desk. โ€œIโ€™ll just leave this here.โ€

Intent on leaving as soon as she had dropped off the crown, Maya turned to go.

โ€œWait,โ€ Easton said, his lips pressed together.

โ€œWhat else do you need, Mr. Hudson?โ€ On his turf, Maya turned back around. โ€œDo you need to check that the item is undamaged?โ€

A man so ruthless to his ex-wife wouldnโ€™t spare others eitherโ€”not that she was unfairly maligning Easton, but he genuinely seemed capable of setting traps at any moment.

Thinking this, Maya didnโ€™t wait for Eastonโ€™s response. She quickly opened the box to show him the crown, demonstrating its intact condition and ensuring she hadnโ€™t switched it out, then added, โ€œMr. Hudson, everything looks good, right?โ€
