Chapter 256: Asking Mom a Question
However, Ellis did not expect Easton to be gone when she opened the door. โHeโs gone?โ she mused. โWeird guy.โ
Scanning down the hallway to confirm that Easton was nowhere in sight, Ellis still didnโt want to stay in the hotel. She found a relatively safe place to wait things out instead.
Though Easton had left her hotel, he hadnโt gone far. After being rejected for remarriage, he sat in a restaurant not too far away, positioned by a floor-to-ceiling window that provided a clear view of the hotelโs distinct signage.
Her words rang in his ears over and over as he drank, tasting nothing. His mind was a mess. Aside from money, did he truly have nothing that attracted Ellis? Had she never liked him, not even a little?
Now that he understood his own feelings, he cared deeply about whether she had ever felt anything for him. Was it possible that all those times sheโd declared her love for him, she had just been pretending?
Recalling their interactions in the past, Easton felt defeated and disappointed.
Alcohol was a wonderful numbing agentโit dulled the heaviness in his chest brought on by Ellisโ refusal to remarry him. Without realizing it, he had downed a substantial amount of liquor, only snapping out of it when a waiter approached to inform him that the restaurant was closing.
Before leaving for this trip, his assistant had already booked him a room in the same hotel as Ellis. With nowhere else to go, it was only natural for him to return there.
Yet, as he took a step toward the hotel, Ellisโ face surfaced in his mindโher expression filled with disdain, as if he was nothing but bad luck.
For the first time in his life, the almighty Mr. Hudson, who was powerful in the business world, felt cowardice creeping from his heart. And that cowardice was eager to claim even more ground.
He had no idea what to do to erase Ellisโ resistance to remarriage. He had no clue how to convince her to willingly return to him.
At this moment, he felt like nothing more than a pathetic cowardโone who was terrified that no matter what he did, it would only push her further away. Driven by this newfound fear, Easton pulled out his phone and dialed his motherโs number.
Sophia was handling urgent work when she suddenly received a call from her son. She said, โIf thereโs no emergency, then call me tomorrow.โ She was about to hang up when Easton said, โMom,โ
Sophia was not entirely surprised, but she sensed something wrong. The idea of hanging up vanished, and she stopped her work. โWhatโs wrong?โ
Having never developed the habit of confiding in others, Easton found it difficult to voice his troubles, especially to his mother. He hesitated, recalling how she had strongly opposed his divorce from Ellis and had been eagerly waiting for grandchildren. The thought of admitting his current dilemma made him feel oddly embarrassed.
On the other end of the line, Sophia noticed the silence. She briefly pulled the phone away from her ear to check the callโs status before bringing it back, her concern evident in her voice. โDid something troublesome happen?โ she asked. โI guess so.โ
โWhat do you mean?โ
โโฆEaston was stammering, and Sophia found it new and interesting.
In the past, Sophia had often been exasperated by her son and her late husbandโs stubbornness. It was rare to see this side of Easton, so she pressed him, โDonโt mumble. Just say everything at once! Iโm your mother, not a stranger. If itโs a difficult problem, Iโll help you.โ
After what felt like an eternity, Easton finally spoke. โMom, am I not an attractive person?โ Sophia, who had been expecting her son to talk about some kind of trouble, was speechless.
Chapter 256: Asking Mom a Question
Was the person on the other end really her son? Not an imposter? Why was he asking such a meaningless question? Where was he lacking in attractiveness?
It wasnโt just a motherโs bias to see her child as flawlessโher sonโs excellence was obvious to the world. Not to mention, she had given him his good looksโฆ
Wait! She was getting sidetracked! Bringing her thoughts back, Sophia asked, โWhy are you asking such a pointless question? Who made you doubt your own attractiveness?โ
After hesitating for a moment, Easton answered honestly, โEllis.โ
Hearing only a name, Sophia immediately sensed something unusual. โWhat does this have to do with her?โ
โBeโbecauseโฆโ Eastonโs words trailed off again, and this time, Sophia had endless patience.
Unable to bring himself to say that Ellis had rejected his proposal for remarriage, Easton pressed his lips together. โForget it. Mom, youโre busy. Iโm hanging up.โ
โHey, you brat! Are you deliberately keeping me in suspense, saying half and leaving half unsaid? If you donโt finishโฆ Iโll just go ask Ellis myself?โ The last part was an empty threat as she had no real intention of asking Ellis.
If Easton was the one who brought it up first, then she wanted to know it from him. If there was any problem, she could ask Ellis later on.
Wait, theyโve been divorced for some time now. Why is Easton acting this way now?
โDonโt ask her!โ There was a hint of frustration in his tone, which was picked up by Sophia.
Did he go to see Ellis but doesnโt want me to know? โAll right. I wonโt ask,โ she said.
