Chapter 305: Hospitalized
After talking, Maya finally understood why Andrewโs attitude had changed so muchโEaston had done something behind their backs. Easton did it because he knew Maya was Ellisโs best friend. Taking advantage of her friendโs influence didnโt count as owing Easton a favor. After escorting Andrew out of the law firm, Maya immediately contacted Ellis and gave her a brief rundown of what had just happened.
Ellis fell silent for a moment before sighing helplessly. โItโs fine. If Easton wants to do a good deed, let him.โ
Does Cameron really have that big of a mouth? One late-night meal had gathered two people she couldnโt stand, and judging by the way Andrew had apologized to Maya, Cameron had probably spilled every last detail of what had happened.
Still, since Cameron had helped her before and Easton wasnโt actually causing trouble for her this time, she couldnโt be bothered to care about his โgood deed.โ
After hanging up, Ellis intended to get back to work, but before she could, her vision suddenly went black, and she lost consciousness. In the last moment before everything turned black, she vaguely heard her colleagues calling her name in alarm, โMs. Harper! Ms. Harper!โ
When she woke up again, a white ceiling filled her vision. She could smell the familiar disinfectant. Wait, isnโt this the smell of disinfectant? When she regained consciousness, a worried face entered her gaze, and she blinked. Morty?
โYouโre up. Do you feel fine?โ As Morty spoke, he pressed the button to ring for the nurse.
โWhy are you here?โ Ellis looked around and finally understood that her colleagues had sent her to the hospital. But why is Morty here? Who asked him to come?
Recalling the time when he ordered takeout, the recipient information hadnโt included her name and that a colleague had brought it upstairs for her, Ellis fell into deep thought. Could Morty have bribed several of her colleagues? Are they feeding him details about her daily life?
โI happened to be at your company, saw you pass out, and brought you to the hospital,โ Morty said honestly.
โYou brought me here? Not my colleagues?โ Ellis was slightly surprised.
โYes.โ
Ellis was speechless. The doctor ran some tests and said she fainted from overworking. โYou need to take care of yourself and get more rest,โ Morty pulled over a nearby chair and sat beside her, his gaze fixed on her pale face.
Hearing that she had collapsed because of overworking, Ellis thought it was because she hadnโt rested well the night before. After taking Maya home, it was already past three in the morning. Then, she didnโt actually fall asleep until after four because she took some time washing up. Barely getting any rest before her alarm went off, she had thrown herself straight into work as soon as she got to the office.
โHadnโt my unlucky year already passed? Why am I still ending up in the hospital?โ Ellis rubbed her temples. โThanks, but you can leave now.โ
โIf I leave, will you be okay on your own?โ Morty was reluctant to let her stay in the hospital alone. โLet the doctor check on you again. Once they confirm youโre fine, Iโll take you home.โ
โNo need.โ Ellis didnโt want to keep owing Morty. Even though he was doing this willingly, she just didnโt like him. She couldnโt bring herself to accept his kindness without feeling burdened by it.
Morty could sense her resistance. He averted his gaze slightly. โDid Easton say something to you last night? Is that why youโฆโ
No, wait, Ellis had always been this way before Easton said anything.
Morty didnโt finish his sentence. He looked hesitant and curious, which made Ellis roll her eyes. She turned her gaze toward him and smirked. โYouโre asking me that? I should be the one asking you! Did Easton tell you not to come near me last night?โ
Morty hadnโt expected the question, but he still nodded honestly. Seeing this, Ellis scoffed. โWhat a lunatic.โ
People rarely changed, and Easton actually thought the world revolved around his will? That everyone had to listen to him?
โDonโt worry, I wonโt listen to him,โ Morty said, raising an eyebrow. โAnd I believe you wonโt either.โ
โI wonโt, but Iโve already told you multiple times that Iโm not interested in dating right now, and Iโll never be into someone like you. Youโre just not my type.โ Ellis glanced toward the hospital room door. โPlease leave.โ
Even if Easton hadnโt warned her, she still wouldnโt want anything to do with Morty. Not liking Morty was one thing, but the other reason was that Easton seemed to have caught on to something. With his self-absorbed nature, he hadnโt even heard her say she wanted to move on. Just one comment from her adoptive mother had been enough to make him lose his mind and lock her up in Dynasty Estate. If he found out Morty was pursuing her, there was no telling what he might do.
She wasnโt afraid of Easton, but she preferred to avoid unnecessary trouble. But if he really pushed her to the edge? Then so be it! Sheโd quit her job at Tate Group and leave for a city that suited her career growth.
Just then, the door was opened, and the doctor stepped inside.
