Chapter 355: Principles and Dealbreakers

โ€œQuit with those terrifying ideas.โ€

โ€œGood thing I moved in.โ€

โ€œYeah, butโ€ฆโ€ Ellis suddenly felt awkward. Easton might be shameless, but she still had her pride. His constant hovering already made her feel sick. Now, with someone else watching, the embarrassment skyrocketed.

โ€œBut what? Spit it out,โ€ Maya urged.

โ€œI canโ€™t explain it.โ€ Ellis couldnโ€™t quite put her finger on why she felt so uncomfortable.

โ€œThen how about thisโ€”you come live with me instead?โ€ Maya suggested. โ€œMy place is way too plain for your ex. He definitely wouldnโ€™t lower himself to stay somewhere like that.โ€

Mayaโ€™s place wasnโ€™t actually bad. It just wasnโ€™t the luxury kind Easton was used to. Guys like him, born into wealth, couldnโ€™t handle any downgrade in lifestyle.

After weighing her options, Ellis came to a simple conclusionโ€”she wasnโ€™t going anywhere. Why should she be the one hiding like a rat in a sewer, just because Easton showed up? Let him cling. He wasnโ€™t going to change anything. After everything sheโ€™d been through, she was done making the same mistakes. Sheโ€™d never fall for Easton again. So if anyone had to move, itโ€™d be him.

She raised her brows with confidence. โ€œWho the hell is Easton? Iโ€™m not about to rearrange my life because of him.โ€

โ€œDoesnโ€™t it mess with your head, having him in your face every day?โ€ Maya leaned in close, studying Ellisโ€™s expression. โ€œArenโ€™t you worried youโ€™ll start softening toward him?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m almost twenty-five. Not some clueless little kid.โ€

She wasnโ€™t going to soften. Easton hadnโ€™t done anything that deserved forgivenessโ€”in fact, heโ€™d done plenty to make her blood boil.

โ€œBeing dumb in love doesnโ€™t have an age limit. Doesnโ€™t matter how old someone isโ€”if they catch feelings again, no one can stop them.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not stupid. I learn from my mistakes.โ€

โ€œI know youโ€™re not stupid, butโ€ฆโ€

You couldnโ€™t underestimate the kind of emotional damage long-term exposure could cause. Ellis and Easton living just a floor apart made everything easierโ€”too easy. Maya was genuinely worried her best friend might forget the pain he caused and fall into the same trap again.

When Ellis saw Maya hesitate, she narrowed her eyes. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œForget it. Donโ€™t wanna piss you off.โ€

Maya didnโ€™t want to ruin the mood by voicing a worry that might never come true. For all she knew, Ellis could end up meeting someone even betterโ€”someone who completely shut the door on Easton ever coming back into her life.

But Ellis hated half-finished conversations. She elbowed her gently.

โ€œCome on, say it. I promise I wonโ€™t get mad.โ€

Chapter 355: Principles and Dealbreakers

Ellis sighed, rubbing her forehead in exasperation. A moment later, she let her hand drop and said, โ€œYouโ€™re trying to say I might fall for him again! Please. Youโ€™re underestimating my standards.โ€

When she first fell for Easton, heโ€™d been engaged to Victoria since childhood. Victoria was his official, rightful fiancรฉe. Everything they did together had felt justified. Once they broke off the engagement and Easton was single, Ellis thought she had a real chance with him. Sheโ€™d been young, naive, and completely inexperienced in love. So when she had the chance to be with the person she adored, she dove in headfirstโ€”blind to everything else. Then Easton cheated on herโ€”with Victoria, no less. Thatโ€™s when she realized something about herself.

She had a kind of emotional OCD. It wasnโ€™t just about loving someone who didnโ€™t love her back. It was the fact that sheโ€™d only ever been with Eastonโ€”mind and bodyโ€”and Easton had been with two women. Everything sheโ€™d done with him, heโ€™d also done with someone else. She wasnโ€™t even his first. Even if he hadnโ€™t cheated while they were married, she still wouldnโ€™t take him back. It wasnโ€™t about being โ€œdirtyโ€ or anything dramatic like that. She just couldnโ€™t stand it. That deep-seated discomfort came from knowing her first everything had been Eastonโ€”but his had been Victoria. There was no balance between them. And her imagination didnโ€™t help. Every time she thought about Easton sleeping with Victoria, she felt physically sick. Goosebumps, nausea, the works. Just that thought alone made her want to avoid all contact with him, let alone feel anything remotely like love.

She was done. Completely done.

Maya asked, โ€œSo whatโ€™s your line in the sand? Just not making the same mistake?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s part of it,โ€ Ellis paused, looking a little embarrassed. โ€œThe other part isโ€ฆ I have a thing about cleanliness. I canโ€™t deal with the fact that heโ€™s slept with Victoria. It feels like picking up someone elseโ€™s secondhand trash.โ€
