Chapter 92: Neighborly Nuisances

The reason he acted this way was that he knew Ellisโ€™s love for vanity and her manipulative nature. He suspected that someday she might tire of their marriage and aim for a divorce, taking a hefty portion of his wealth to live a carefree life. He would never give her that chance.

โ€œIf you two donโ€™t divorce, the prenup is indeed just a piece of paper; but if you ever want a divorce, Ellis wonโ€™t get anything. The terms are too harsh on her.โ€ Sophia hoped her son and Ellis would have a lifetime of harmony, but she still wanted to nullify the prenuptial agreement eventually.

โ€œWeโ€™ll see about that. As long as weโ€™re not divorcing, sheโ€™s still my wife and will enjoy the benefits.โ€ Easton glanced at his watch. โ€œThereโ€™s a senior management meeting I need to get to. Mom, Iโ€™ve got to go.โ€

Sophia agreed that the prenup didnโ€™t apply if they stayed married. She couldnโ€™t get her son to void it now, but maybe she could push for it later.

โ€œYou go handle your business.โ€

After hanging up with Easton and returning to the living room, Sophia saw Ellis still tearful yet hopeful. She cleared her throat uncomfortably. โ€œEllis, Easton is grown up and has his own ideas, which I canโ€™t control. Youโ€™re his wife; you should try talking to him. Married couples shouldnโ€™t hold grudges overnight.โ€

Ellis was stunned by Sophiaโ€™s sudden change of heart. Wasnโ€™t Sophia supposed to be helping her get justice from Easton on the phone? Was this a sudden shift in allegiance? Was this visit just a test to see if playing the victim would get her to help? Now it proved futile; she couldnโ€™t compare to her own son.

Ellis controlled the spreading disappointment within her. Picking up a tissue, she carefully wiped away her tears and managed a somewhat natural smile.

At that moment, Sophia, seeing Ellis stop crying and obviously forcing a smile, felt helpless. Her son had no thoughts of divorce and wasnโ€™t adopting a more appropriate approach to dissuade Ellis from divorcing, leaving her no choice but to temporarily side with him.

โ€œHave some water, calm down,โ€ Sophia handed Ellis a glass of water. โ€œOne of these days, Iโ€™ll give Easton a piece of my mind for you.โ€

Ellis understood the superficial nature of Sophiaโ€™s offer. After finishing her water in one go, she stopped demeaning herself and packed her things back into her bag. โ€œMom, I should get back to work and not keep you.โ€

โ€œWonโ€™t you stay a bit longer?โ€ Sophia asked, trying to keep her.

โ€œAnother time.โ€

Watching Ellis leave, Sophia knew she was upset but couldnโ€™t address it directly. That boy better not push too hard and know when to back off!

At Petal Estates, arriving at Caseyโ€™s home, Ellis couldnโ€™t find him and had to search the whole house. As she searched, her spirit flagged. Was her life doomed to be forever marred by that despicable manโ€™s actions, with Sophia unwilling to help?

Unfortunately, her kick struck the ever-exclusive Casey.

โ€œWhat the heck, is my house your playground?โ€ Casey snapped at her.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, I didnโ€™t mean to,โ€ Ellis quickly apologized.

โ€œWhy did my mom hire you to serve me?โ€ Casey picked up the object that hit him and tossed it in the trash.

โ€œI have a name; is it so hard to use it? You call me stupid; how about pointing out your own rudeness?โ€ Ellis was fed up.

With her husbandโ€™s nature, losing her job with an annual salary of 140,000 dollars seemed inevitable. She wasnโ€™t going to babysit this troublesome kid any longer.

โ€œYou are stupid! The last time your husband barged in here, you denied he was your husband, called him a pervert, and said to keep your marital games at home, not here!โ€ Caseyโ€™s grievances against Ellis continued from a previous incident.

More than just a pervert, her husband was scum!

Ellis turned away. โ€œJust tell me what you need done today.โ€

Seeing Ellis downcast and as if she had suffered a great blow, Casey didnโ€™t continue berating her. After briefly stating his needs, he retreated to his lab.

Ellis noted down Caseyโ€™s requirements, doubting if he ever stepped outside his home, seemingly always within these walls. As she neared the end of her tasks, she stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows to take a break and enjoy the view. As she looked out, a familiar and unwelcome figure appeared not far away.

Morty! Caseyโ€™s neighbor is Morty? Suddenly, Eastonโ€™s accusations of Ellisโ€™s incompetence and the embarrassment it caused her, along with the threat of being caught in photos with Casey, flooded her mind.
