Chapter 608
Melody couldn't believe Tiffany's admission. This allowed Melody to argue she'd been controlled, claiming she hadn't confessed or signed the confessionโWilma had taken over her body! All she needed was Wilma's confession, along with Lorenzo's evidence and the experimental pod data, to prove her innocence.
Lost in self-satisfaction for a moment, Melody was jolted by a mocking laugh. Looking up, she met Tiffany's disdainful gaze.
"What wishful thinking," Tiffany sneered.
"What do you mean?" Melody asked.
"Does it matter if I admit it? Does it matter if I plotted against you? Melody, you're excellent at avoiding the main issue," Tiffany retorted. "Do you think my admission clears you? You're delusional. These crimes are yours alone."
Melody bristled, then smiled. "Who says they're mine? If you controlled me to confess, you also controlled the murder charge, right? The investigation should focus on you."
Tiffany admired Melody's audacityโher shamelessness. Shaking her head, Tiffany stood to leave.
Melody wouldn't let her go easily. "Even if I die, I deserve to die knowing the truth! Did you make Wilma take over my body to confess?"
"Yes."
"And you tampered with the experimental pod data?"
"Yes."
"And you sent Wilma into the pod to switch bodies with me?"
"Yes."
Tiffany's quick answers fueled Melody's excitement. She had the confessions she needed to overturn everything. One final question remained.
Taking a deep breath, Melody asked, "I'm in prison, sentenced to death. Is that your doing?"
Silence filled the small, dimly lit cell. After a long pause, Tiffany softly replied, "Yes."
Originally, Melody's death sentence wouldn't have been so swift, but Tiffany had manipulated Richard's intervention, rushing the process through in three days.
Upon hearing confirmation, Melody leaped to her feet, frantically waving at the overhead camera. "Listen! I'm innocent! This is all Tiffany's slander! Let me out! I need my lawyer! I'll appeal! I'll overturn this death sentence!"
Despite her prolonged shouting, no one came. Her voice grew hoarse, her energy drained, yet the silence persisted.
"How could this be?" Melody stared bewilderedly at the camera. The red light remained on, indicating someone was watching, as it always had when she'd feigned self-harm. Guards usually intervened, but not this time.
Her face fell. Turning to Tiffany, eyes blazing with hate, she hissed, "It's you! It's you!"
Tiffany smiled softly. "Yes, it's me."
Melody's delusions, as Tiffany predicted, were futile. Tiffany remained unafraid, unconcerned by Melody's manipulations. Reaching the door, she glanced back at the struggling, chained Melody.
Melody felt disappointment, anger, and helplessness. Tiffany smiled faintly. In a previous timeline, after taking the fall for Melody and serving time for Kenneth, Melody had visited herโglamorous, victorious, making Tiffany seem frail and miserable. Now, roles were reversed, but Tiffany felt only nostalgia, not a desire for further humiliation.
Just as Tiffany turned to leave, the unexpected happened: Melody, somehow free of her handcuffs, lunged at Tiffany, a crazed look on her face. Perhaps knowing death was inevitable, her madness was fiercer than ever.
"You think you've won? No! Even if I die, I'll drag you to hell with me!" With a guttural scream, Melody tore a thin wire from her mouthโa micro-bomb's detonator. Tiffany's face changed instantly.
"Let's die together! If I can't have peace, neither will you!" Melody cackled, pulling the wire.
She'd hoped to force a confession from Tiffany, or, failing that, take her down with her. The micro-bomb, secretly placed on her in the experimental pod by Lorenzo, had been swallowed in the chaos of her arrest, evading detection. It was her last, desperate gamble. She'd endured its presence, day and night, for this moment.
Melody's laughter was insane. "Tiffany, you can't escape!"
At such close range, Tiffany couldn't avoid the blast. No titleโRichard's wife, Lady of the Hampton family, Miracle Healerโwould save her. Melody felt triumph.
But Tiffany's surprise was fleeting, replaced by calm composure. The explosion erupted, flames surging from Melody's abdomen. The blast was devastating, but an invisible shield protected Tiffany; she was unharmed.
Melody stared, eyes wide with disbelief, regret, and shock. As the bomb detonated, silence descended, punctuated only by the tremor of the explosion and Melody's final, furious scream: "No!"
