Chapter 659
The staff cheered, "Let's go! Let's go! We can finally get off work!" A few staff members grabbed their bags and left. One girl approached Zoe, asking curiously, "Zoe, that handsome man at the warehouse entrance has been waiting for you all night. Is he your boyfriend?"
Following the girl's gaze, Zoe saw Sidney standing at the warehouse entrance. Under the streetlight, he looked tall and lonely. Zoe glanced at him before looking away. "No," she said firmly.
The girl, excited, exclaimed, "Really? Can you introduce me to him?"
Zoe dashed the girl's hopes. "Don't even think about it. He has a fiancée."
"Huh?" The girl's disappointment was evident as she watched Sidney's retreating figure. She muttered, "Then why did he wait for you all night? Bah, scumbag!"
Her last words were loud enough for Sidney to hear. He turned to look at them.
Zoe grabbed her purse and Alice's arm. "Alice, it's late. Let's go home."
Alice hesitated. "My brother's picking me up… Could he drive you home? It's not safe at night."
"No, thanks," Zoe replied, shaking her head. "You go ahead. I'll lock up the warehouse. It's not remote; I can get a taxi at the gate."
"Okay," Alice said, nodding and leaving. As she passed Sidney, she gave him a pointed look that clearly conveyed her opinion: Bah, scumbag!
Sidney, confused, thought, Do I have a misunderstanding? He shook his head, dismissing it, and entered the warehouse.
Zoe locked her notebook, photographing the contents to prevent loss, then locked up and headed out. Sidney was standing nearby, but Zoe ignored him.
"Hello," Sidney said. He felt dejected, having been ignored all night. Tiffany had given him the warehouse address, suggesting he try his luck after their afternoon meeting at school.
Unexpectedly, Zoe was still there. Seeing her distress, he wanted to help, but she coldly pushed him away. He waited for her—a full ten hours. Can't this show my sincerity? he wondered.
Gritting his teeth, Sidney grabbed Zoe's arm. "You should at least give me a chance. You didn't give me any reason to end our relationship. Is that appropriate?"
Zoe remained silent, coldly shaking off his hand and locking the warehouse door. Sidney followed, even helping her with the heavy shutter door.
At the roadside, Zoe hailed a taxi, but it was late, and few cars passed. Sidney gently tugged her arm. "I'll drive you home."
"No, thanks," Zoe said, looking straight ahead.
Luckily, a taxi arrived. As Zoe reached for the door, Sidney's hand stopped her.
"Let go," Zoe demanded.
"No," Sidney replied.
Zoe's anger flared, remembering the coffee incident and Molly's shy expression earlier. Without thinking, she bit Sidney's arm. Though she restrained herself, it stung.
Sidney, surprised, a flicker of joy in his eyes, asked, "Are you reluctant to bite me?"
That was a mistake. Zoe bit him harder.
"Ouch!" Sidney winced, but didn't push her away. He forced a smile. "Bite me if it helps you calm down…"
The impatient taxi driver asked, "Are you getting in or not?"
"Yes," Zoe said.
"No," Sidney countered.
Their simultaneous, conflicting answers amused the driver, who recognized a lovers' quarrel. "If you're not getting in, close the door. It's late, and I have more fares."
Before Sidney could apologize, Zoe slipped into the taxi, closing and locking the door. "Let's go," she told the driver.
The taxi drove off, leaving Sidney defeated. He hadn't expected such resistance. We need to clarify this, or we'll never have the chance, he thought. He sped after her in his sports car.
Zoe, surprised to see him again, asked the driver to speed up. The driver shook his head. "It's a sports car. I can't outrun it."
He tried to persuade her, "Young lady, he's your boyfriend, right? Couples fight. Talk it out; don't give each other the silent treatment."
Zoe was stunned. The taxi stopped, and Sidney pulled up beside them, giving the driver some money. "Thank you, sir. Sorry for the trouble."
The street was empty. Zoe took a deep breath and looked at Sidney. "You've been asking what I think. Fine. I'll be straightforward. Why are you pursuing me when you have a fiancée? You could have any woman. Am I just a plaything?"
