Chapter 245
The air suddenly went still.
The fake Kayla’s ears buzzed as she slapped Elaine hard across the face. “Are you out of your mind?”
“Don’t you know? Landon is dead!” Elaine shouted loudly, making sure Amelia could hear every word.
Gloria let out a piercing scream. “Landon, my son…” Then she collapsed to the floor, unconscious.
Amelia had been racking her brain, wondering how to act so she could fool Elaine and Kayla.
With Gloria fainting, she seized the chance. She dropped to her knees beside Gloria, crying out, “Mom, Mom…”
“Are you shocked, Amelia?” Elaine sneered, crouching down and staring at her with a malicious grin.
Amelia pinched her thigh hard, forcing tears to her eyes. She pointed at Elaine weakly, her voice trembling. “You’re lying, aren’t you?”
“You’re just trying to shock me by saying Landon is dead, aren’t you?”
“Elaine, you’re absolutely vicious! If anything happens to my mom, I won’t let you get away with it!”
The more devastated Amelia acted, the more pleased Elaine looked.
“I’m not making this up, you know. Every word I said is true. Amelia, you’d better start worrying about your own future.”
“That’s enough!” the fake Kayla snapped.
She grabbed Elaine and dragged her aside like she was picking up a misbehaving child, gritting her teeth. “You must be out of your mind! Get out of my sight, now!”
Elaine just shrugged, not caring at all.
Anyway, she’d already achieved her goal, so leaving didn’t bother her one bit.
“Oh, my baby…” Amelia groaned, clutching her belly in pain.
Elaine turned back to look at her, a wicked smirk tugging at her lips.
‘Amelia, just wait. You and your baby are both as good as dead,’ Elaine thought to herself.
“Mom, Mom…” Amelia called out, gritting her teeth through the pain as she reached for Gloria.
The mother–in–law and daughter–in–law, who only had each other, looked utterly miserable–one lying on the floor, the other kneeling beside her, both caught in despair.
Kayla took a deep breath, snapped a few photos of how miserable they looked, and then barked, “Call the doctor, now!” As much as she hated it, she couldn’t let anything happen to Amelia or the baby.
Otherwise, Aiden would kill her for sure.
The whole house was thrown into utter chaos, with medical staff scrambling everywhere.
Some rushed to help Gloria, while others hurried to check on Amelia.
Thanks to Elaine’s little stunt, Amelia’s hands were finally freed from the bandages, if only for a little while.
She lay on the bed, crying out in pain. “It hurts… Please, tell me my baby will be okay, right?”
“How is she?” the fake Kayla asked, sweat breaking out on her forehead, the scars on her face making her look even more intense.
“She’s stable for now, but the pain hasn’t stopped. It’s likely a pregnancy scare. She needs strict bed rest and absolutely no more stress.”
Kayla cursed out loud, “Damn it, this is all that woman’s fault!”
No one knew how careful she’d been with her hostage, making sure Amelia had good food and comfort every day just to keep her from getting upset.
And now, thanks to Elaine, all that effort was ruined in an instant!
“Kayla, please, help us…” Amelia’s voice trembled as she reached out desperately to Kayla for help.
“Kayla, come on, no matter what, this is your brother’s baby! Please, Kayla…”
The fake Kayla was so fed up she almost blurted out, “I’m not even Kayla!”
“Pregnant women are really emotional. If this keeps up, it could end in disaster,” the doctor warned.
The fake Kayla scratched her head and turned to Amelia. “The dead can’t come back, Landon’s gone. If you want to keep this baby safe, you need to pull yourself together. If you keep falling apart like this, no one can help you.”
“Kayla, Landon is dead… How am I supposed to just move on?” Amelia sobbed. “I just want to go with him too!”
“Don’t you care about your baby at all?” the fake Kayla snapped, splashing a glass of cold water in Amelia’s face.
Amelia froze, her tears finally stopping. She just stared at Kayla, her eyes full of helpless grief.
Just then, Aiden got the news and rushed over.
As soon as he saw Amelia’s state, he just started beating Kayla.
The fake Kayla didn’t dare fight back.
She could only scramble out of Amelia’s sight as fast as possible.
That way, even if she got roughed up, no one would suspect she was a fake.
“Poppy, if anything happens to her, I swear I won’t let you off!” Aiden roared, his eyes burning with a crazed obsession.
Poppy looked utterly wronged. “It was all Elaine’s doing. I’ve been trying my best to keep Amelia calm, but she just had to barge in and stir up trouble…”
“What? The Atkinson family?” Aiden narrowed his eyes, every inch of him radiating danger.
“Yeah, her. She thinks she can do whatever she wants just because the boss favors the Atkinson family. She’s trying to destroy Amelia.”
“Damn it!” Aiden stormed off, radiating menace.
Poppy let out a sigh of relief.
‘Finally, the heat was off me and aimed at someone else,‘ Kayla thought to herself.
‘But Amelia…’ she thought, her heart heavy with worry.
Just thinking about the mess Amelia was in made Poppy’s head throb.
She lingered in the courtyard for a long time before finally leaving Kingsley Manor.
When Gloria finally came to, she was heartbroken. “Amelia, what are we going to do? What about the baby?”
“We have to stay strong, Mom,” Amelia said, hugging her mother–in–law tightly.
She wanted so badly to tell her that Landon was still alive.
But she was terrified the enemy might notice if she acted strange, so she had to swallow the words and keep them to herself.
“Amelia, Amelia…” Gloria called out, her voice trembling.
“Mom, the doctor said I had a pregnancy scare. I can’t get too worked up. I’m really trying to keep it together. For the baby’s sake, you have to stay strong too!” Amelia said, her voice steady but full of determination.
Gloria reached out and gently touched Amelia’s belly–her precious grandson was in there.
She had already lost her son. She couldn’t lose her grandson too.
Amelia was suffering just as much as she was. How could she possibly make things even harder for her?
As Amelia’s mother–in–law, she knew she had to be even stronger–for both of them.
“Amelia, we’ll make it through this, I promise. No matter what happens, you’ll always have me by your side…” Gloria said, her voice full of determination.
“Mom…” Amelia whispered, tears welling up in her eyes.
“When all this is over, when the baby is born…” Gloria continued, her voice trembling.
She wanted to tell Amelia, ‘Whether you choose to remarry or stay with the Kingsley family, it’s your choice.‘ But she just couldn’t say it out loud, afraid it would only make Amelia feel worse.
Gloria choked up, but she didn’t dare say the rest, afraid it would upset Amelia even more.
The mother–in–law and daughter–in–law hugged each other, crying their hearts out.
The guard keeping watch over them live–streamed the scene straight to Kayla.
Poppy let out a cold laugh. “Guess it’s true–a mother really will do anything when her child’s on the line…”
In a spacious, elegantly decorated room, the real Kayla was sprawled weakly on the sofa, unable to even sit up.
“Kayla, you really are the definition of a mother’s strength,” Poppy said with a smirk, holding up the video for Kayla to see.
Kayla squeezed her eyes shut in pain, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Poppy, my Aiden will never forgive you for this!”
“Oh, I know. He already roughed me up today,” Poppy replied, gently touching the bruise at the corner of her eye. “We look exactly the same, but why does he only care about you and go so hard on me?”
“A fake will always be a fake!” Kayla spat.
Watching her mom and sister–in–law suffer like that on the screen, Kayla could only blame herself for letting her guard down and falling right into Poppy’s trap.
If only she hadn’t gone out shopping, if only she hadn’t been knocked out in that bathroom… none of this would be happening now!
“Yeah, I’m a fake! But right now, I’m the one holding all the cards! Kayla, the boss has already thrown you aside!” Poppy spat viciously.
Kayla shot back, “the Flying Tiger Sect won’t just sit back and do nothing. Even if my brother’s gone, they’ll fight the Kington Gang to the bitter end!”
“Then go ahead and pray the Flying Tiger Sect comes to save you!” Poppy laughed, her voice dripping with mockery and arrogance.
