Chapter 108
โAmelia, whereโs your gift?โ Elaine looked arrogant, acting as if she were the lady of the Kingsley family.
Amelia didnโt even glance at Elaine, quietly standing behind Landon. She thought, โRight now, Landon is the best gift.โ
โAmelia, didnโt you hear me talking to you?โ Elaine, clearly irritated by the cold shoulder, raised her voice.
Guests were everywhere. Everyone curiously glanced at Elaine, then at Amelia.
Amelia was exasperated about being put on the spot. She was ready to snap back, but Landon beat her to it. โYouโre in no position to criticize the lady of the Kingsley family.โ
Elaine was stunned. After a few seconds, she stomped in frustration. โLandon, todayโs Mrs. Donna Kingsleyโs birthday. Not bringing a gift is disrespectful to her.โ
โI am the best gift.โ Landon shot Elaine a stern look before turning to Donna. โGrandma, if it hadnโt been for Amelia, I wouldnโt have woken up.โ
โReally?โ Though fond of Landon, Donna didnโt have much affection for Amelia. When Landon had been unconscious, sheโd thought Amelia was only after the Kingsley familyโs money. Now that Landon had woken up, she was even more convinced that Amelia wasnโt worthy of their family.
โGrandma, if Amelia hadnโt carefully looked after me and kept talking to me, I never would have come around,โ Landon said.
Amelia felt a bit uneasy. She thought, โI did talk to Landon often, but carefully look after himโฆ Thatโs pushing it. Iโve barely kept him from feeling worse. Every time he made progress, it was usually because I got him worked up.โ
โWell then, take good care of Landon from now on. As for everything else, donโt bother thinking about it,โ Donna said, her expression softening a bit.
Amelia nodded. โAs long as Landon is well, Iโll be happy.โ
โLandon, do you think my new dress looks good?โ Shyly, Elaine spun around in front of Landon like a lovesick girl.
Donna couldnโt miss Elaineโs intentions, but she simply raised an eyebrow and then pulled Amelia aside. โI need to talk to you.โ
โHoney, wait for me,โ Landon called, pushing his wheelchair to catch up.
Elaine was eager for a rare moment alone with Landon. She said, โLandon, donโt leaveโฆโ
โMs. Atkinson, I donโt have time for you,โ Landon said, his expression darkening.
Brooke immediately stepped in and pulled Elaine aside. Landon followed Amelia, his gaze cold and determined.
โLandon, why are you following us? Stay with Ms. Atkinson,โ Donna asked, clearly displeased.
โGrandma, itโs Ameliaโs first time at Kingsley Manor. Sheโs unfamiliar with the place, and I need to stay with her,โ Landon said, his tone soft as he waved to Amelia.
Amelia remembered Landonโs earlier warning to never leave his sight. She couldnโt help but frown, thinking, โEven in front of Donna?โ
โLandonโฆโ Donna was furious, but seeing how recently Landon had woken up, she held back, unwilling to be too harsh.
โShe clearly comes from humble beginnings and doesnโt belong here. How old is she? She still needs Landonโs company?โ Elaine huffed.
Guests passed by, some eager for gossip. All eyes were on Amelia, neglected by her parents, nearly losing her fiancรฉ to her stepsister because of a misdiagnosis. With such a background, Amelia certainly seemed unworthy.
When Landon was in a coma, Gloria married Amelia to Landon on Landonโs behalf. Now that Landon was awake, he probably didnโt care for Amelia anymore.
Meanwhile, Elaine, from the wealthy Atkinson family, might catch Landonโs eye.
โElaine, watch your words.โ Landonโs tone was cold, his presence commanding.
โDid I say something wrong? The Edwards family is beneath me, not even fit to polish my shoesโฆ Ah!โ Elaine gasped as Landon suddenly grabbed her wrist, squeezing painfully, โLandon, what are you doing? Youโre hurting me.โ
โApologize.โ Landonโs tone was icy, his gaze like a dagger.
โWhat?โ Elaine was stunned. She thought, โIs Landon asking me to apologize to Amelia? Why should I?โ
โApologize to Amelia,โ Landon repeated firmly.
โYouโฆ Landon, you clearly donโt know whatโs good for you.โ Elaine was embarrassed. She spun around and stormed out of the living room.
It was clear to everyone who had won this battle. Throughout it all, Amelia stayed silent, winning without uttering a word. They realized that a woman who could have Landon defending her at every turn was someone not to be underestimated.
The guests quickly dropped their biased views and began flattering. โMrs. Amelia, itโs a pleasure to meet you. Iโm from the Lloyd family and in the steel industryโฆโ
Another said, โIโm in the importโexport business from the Bates familyโฆโ
Suddenly, Amelia was the center of attention. Fortunately, she was wellโversed in socializing.
Donna watched from the side, her expression softening slightly. โLandon, Amelia isnโt completely hopeless, after all.โ
โGrandma, sheโs wonderful,โ Landon said with a fond smile. He thought, โLooks like Iโll need to give her a raise โ handling high-society ladies has just become part of her job.โ
The atmosphere in the living room remained friendly until dinner was ready. Only then did the ladies let Amelia go.
โThat was exhausting,โ Amelia muttered. โLandon, youโve got to give me a raise.โ
โOkay,โ Landon chuckled, shaking his head. He thought, โSee? My prediction was spot-on.โ
The dinner was a buffet-style spread. Amelia, already hungry, grabbed several plates and sat down to eat with Landon.
โHoney, I want some wine,โ Landon said, eyeing the drinks station in the distance, his craving evident. It had been almost six months since heโd had a drink. Today, he wanted to toast with Amelia.
โOkay.โ Amelia went to fetch the wine but ran into Elaine again. Amelia thought, โShe just wonโt leave me alone.โ
Amelia was about to leave with the wine when Elaine stepped in her way, whispering, โAmelia, donโt get too smug. You wonโt be Landonโs wife for long.โ
โIs that so?โ Amelia replied, unimpressed.
โOf course. The Kingsleys prefer me as Landonโs wife,โ Elaine declared.
Amelia smiled, not buying a word of it. The immature, beautiful girl wasnโt Landonโs type.
โYou donโt believe me?โ Elaine was irritated.
Amelia shook her head. โIf he had even the slightest interest in you, he wouldnโt have publicly scolded you.โ
โThatโs just him trying to upset me.โ Elaine smirked. โBut youโll be the one who gets scolded much worse than I did.โ
โIf you think so, then fine.โ Amelia didnโt want to waste time with someone so childish. She was about to walk away with her drink when Elaine suddenly grabbed her wrist.
Then, Elaine screamed, โAmelia, how could you throw wine at me?โ
Everyone turned to look. Elaineโs chest was splattered with red wine, and Ameliaโs glass was empty. The direction the wine had splashed was directly on Elaine.
Everyone assumed Amelia had thrown the wine and silently shook their heads. They thought, โHow could someone from a wealthy family act so classless? Throwing wine at a guest during an elderโs birthday celebration โ unbelievable!โ
โWhatโs going on?โ Cynthia rushed over.
โMrs. Cynthia, she threw wine at me,โ Elaine said, her eyes red with tears. โThis was the new dress I bought yesterday for Mrs. Donnaโs birthday party. This is the first time Iโm wearing it.โ
โOh no, what do we do now? This wine stain is impossible to get outโฆโ Cynthia rushed to smooth things over. โWhy donโt you go change? Iโll have her pay for the dress.โ
Elaine said, โHowโs she going to pay? This dress is the only one Norava has.โ
โWhat do you suggest then?โ Cynthia hesitated. โPay you in money?โ
โDoes the Atkinson family lack money?โ Elaine lifted her chin haughtily. โAmelia, didnโt you buy a new dress yesterday, too? Just give me that one to compensate.โ
