Chapter 223

The air suddenly went still. The luxurious European-style living room was silent as Landon and Amelia stared at each other from across the room. Ameliaโ€™s eyes were brimming with deep affection, while Landonโ€™s were filled with confusion. Seeing this, Monica was about to explode with rage, but if she blew up now, sheโ€™d basically be telling Landon that the pregnant woman standing in front of him was his wife. She could only grit her teeth and endure it.

โ€œMonica, itโ€™s been a while,โ€ Paloma greeted calmly, not thinking there was anything wrong with bringing Amelia along. As Monica was wary of Paloma, she had no choice but to endure it. โ€œPaloma, why did you bring her here?โ€ Monica asked, her voice tight with frustration. โ€œSheโ€™s my friend, and sheโ€™s also the woman your cousin is after,โ€ Paloma replied casually. Hearing this, Monica stomped her foot in frustration. Suddenly, she sensed something was off. She glanced sideways and saw that Landon and Amelia had started talking.

โ€œAre you okay?โ€ Amelia asked, looking up at Landon with concern. โ€˜Does this woman know me? Why does she look at me with such deep affection and concern?โ€™ Landon wondered, feeling puzzled. Amelia heard his thoughts and slowly smiled. โ€˜Thank goodness, I can still hear his thoughts,โ€™ Amelia thought. Even though heโ€™d forgotten her, he treated her differently. โ€˜He must still have feelings for me,โ€™ Amelia thought. โ€˜Otherwise, the way he is, heโ€™d never be this nice to me.โ€™ โ€œLandon, donโ€™t you remember me?โ€ Amelia asked, her voice tinged with sadness. Her sadness felt like an invisible hand squeezing Landonโ€™s heart. His brows furrowed with a pang in his heart as he said, โ€œIโ€™m sorry, I donโ€™t know you.โ€ But a small voice in his mind murmured, โ€˜She looks so sad. Why is that? Am I supposed to know her?โ€™ Amelia listened quietly, a gratified look appearing in her eyes. โ€œYes, you should know me,โ€ she said with conviction. โ€œYouโ€ฆโ€ Landon began, but before he could finish, Monica suddenly stepped between them. โ€œHoney, youโ€™re making me jealous,โ€ Monica said loudly, cutting in without hesitation. Landon pressed his lips into a thin line, feeling a surge of irritation inside. โ€œMiss Edwards, please mind your manners,โ€ Monica said, turning back to Amelia with a warning glare. Seeing that, Amelia lowered her gaze and didnโ€™t say another word.

As Landonโ€™s life was in Monicaโ€™s hands, she couldnโ€™t afford to be reckless. Just seeing that he was safe and sound was already enough to make her happy. โ€œMonica, Iโ€™ve been craving your familyโ€™s coffee,โ€ Paloma said. Monica nodded and, deliberately in front of Amelia, said in her sweetest voice to Landon, โ€œHoney, would you mind checking on things in the kitchen for me?โ€ โ€œOkay,โ€ Landon nodded. Then he walked off obediently. He didnโ€™t look back even once. Seeing that, Monica was very pleased, a provocative smirk curling at her lips. But Ameliaโ€™s eyes were noticeably red. She wasnโ€™t actually that upset; she just knew Monica would only be satisfied if she saw her looking miserable. That way, Monica wouldnโ€™t suspect that Landon still cared about her. Between his love and his safety, Amelia chose the latter. โ€˜Survival comes first, love can wait,โ€™ Amelia told herself.

โ€œMonica, this villa is really nice,โ€ Paloma said, glancing around. โ€œArenโ€™t your parents living here with you?โ€ โ€œMy husband likes his peace, so I didnโ€™t let them move in,โ€ Monica replied. โ€œSo itโ€™s just the two of you, living the coupleโ€™s life, huh?โ€ Paloma smiled. โ€œOf course! My husband is so gentle and spoils me rottenโ€ฆโ€ Monica lifted her chin proudly. She kept going on and on about her husband, obviously trying to get under Ameliaโ€™s skin. Amelia sat on the sofa, her fingers clenched tightly as she twisted the hem of her clothes. โ€˜Walk right in just to get hurtโ€“serves you right!โ€™ Monica sneered to herself.

โ€œMonica, when are you two getting married?โ€ Paloma asked. Hearing the question, Monica hesitated. As Landon and Amelia hadnโ€™t divorced yet, they couldnโ€™t even get married legally. โ€˜May as well bring it up while Ameliaโ€™s here today,โ€™ Monica thought. โ€œPaloma, why donโ€™t you sit for a bit? Miss Edwards, can we have a word in private?โ€ Monica said. โ€œOkay,โ€ Amelia nodded. She followed Monica out to the terrace. โ€œYou saw it with your own eyes, didnโ€™t you? Landon has already forgotten you. Heโ€™s in love with me now. Just go home and sign the divorce papers already!โ€ Monica lowered her voice and said.

โ€œIโ€™m not getting a divorce,โ€ Amelia said, looking up at her with tear-filled eyes, her smile both pitiful and unwavering. โ€œYou!โ€ Monicaโ€™s face twisted with anger. โ€œDonโ€™t you have any self-respect? He doesnโ€™t want you anymore, so why are you still hanging around the Kingsley family like a stray?โ€ โ€œIโ€™m having his baby, and that child will inherit the Kingsley Group! If Iโ€™m destined to lose him, then fineโ€“Iโ€™ll hold on to his money, and keep the title of Mrs. Kingsley!โ€ Ameliaโ€™s voice was quiet, but her resolve was rock solid. Monica had never expected that a woman whoโ€™d been cast aside would dare to be so bold in front of her. As the eldest daughter of the Montgomery family, Monica had always gotten whatever she wanted. But today, she finally got put in her place by Amelia. She refused to accept it.

โ€œAmelia, Iโ€™m the one who saved him. If it werenโ€™t for me, heโ€™d be dead already!โ€ Monica said. โ€œSo what? He wouldnโ€™t have been in danger if it werenโ€™t for your people from the Kington Gang!โ€ Amelia retorted. โ€œOh? So you know about that?โ€ Monica sneered. She laughed, her eyes brimming with arrogance and smug pride. โ€œAmelia, since you know about the Kington Gang, youโ€™d better back off now. Otherwiseโ€ฆโ€ Monica warned, her tone laced with threat. โ€œOr what? Are you planning to kill me?โ€ Amelia chuckled softly, shaking her head. โ€œGo aheadโ€“if I die, your cousin dies too.โ€ Hearing this, Monicaโ€™s smug smile froze. โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€ โ€œAidenโ€™s been poisoned. For the next ten years, he can only stay alive if I keep giving him the antidote,โ€ Amelia replied calmly. At that, Monica was stunned. Her eyes widened in disbelief. โ€œHow is that possible? My cousin is so brilliantโ€ฆโ€ โ€œMy husbandโ€™s just as smart, but didnโ€™t he still end up under your control?โ€ Amelia shook her head. โ€œMonica, from now on, letโ€™s each get what we want out of this. You want the man, I want the money and the title.โ€ Monica sank into deep thoughts. Back then, all she wanted was to have Landon all to herself. But people were greedy by natureโ€“they always wanted more. After keeping Landon close like her own possession, Monica started craving even moreโ€ฆ She wanted to become the rightful Mrs. Kingsley! She even wanted to take advantage of Landonโ€™s position at the Flying Tiger Sect to smooth things over with the Kington Gang, hoping they could eventually get along and keep the peace. But Amelia just wouldnโ€™t let go, and that was a real headacheโ€ฆ Monica couldnโ€™t stand her, but there was nothing she could do about it. Her cousinโ€“that total control freakโ€“had laid down the law: she wasnโ€™t allowed to lay a finger on Amelia or the baby she was carrying.

โ€œAmelia, do you really care that much about your reputation and money?โ€ Monica asked through gritted teeth. Amelia gave a bitter smile. โ€œYeah, I do.โ€ โ€œYou really areโ€ฆ such a money-grubber,โ€ Monica sneered with contempt. โ€œWhat did he ever see in you?โ€ But Amelia said nothing. No matter how Monica tried to provoke her, she just kept her mouth shut. Sometimes, keeping quiet was the best comeback. After a few tries, Monica felt like all her punches were landing on cottonโ€“she walked away, totally deflated. Amelia let out a gentle smile, rooting for herself in her heart.

โ€œAmelia, come have some coffee!โ€ Paloma called from the living room. Amelia let out a deep breath, taking a moment to compose herself. When she walked back in, her face was clouded with sadness. Her gaze on Landon was tinged with sorrow. โ€˜Ugh, sheโ€™s driving me crazy!โ€™ Monica grumbled to herself, then quickly texted Aiden. [Aiden, just come get Amelia out of here! I canโ€™t stand seeing her another second!] Aiden replied, clearly startled. [Where are you?] Monica: [At home! Paloma brought her over!] Seeing this message, Aiden was stunned. He jumped to his feet and hurried out the door.

โ€œMr. Kyleโ€ฆโ€ the butler hurried after him. Slap! โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you keep an eye on Miss Paloma?โ€ Aiden raised his hand and gave the butler a hard slap, his fury barely contained. โ€œMiss Paloma went to Miss Monicaโ€™s houseโ€ฆis that not allowed?โ€ the butler asked, completely bewildered. Paloma was the Kyle familyโ€™s sheltered young lady, but there were only two places where she had true freedom: the Kyle family estate and the Montgomery residence. โ€œFrom now on, I want to know wherever she goesโ€“report to me every time!โ€ Aiden barked, then immediately booked a flight and rushed to the Montgomery residence.
