Chapter 224
The Montgomery familyโs lavish coffee made Amelia very pleasant. There were also cherries, lemon juice, and little yogurt cakes. All were her favorites.
โEven after losing his memory, Landon still remembered what I liked!โ Amelia realized.
โBut these were all things Monica didnโt likeโฆโ she couldnโt help but notice.
โHoney, how do you like todayโs coffee?โ Monica asked, so jealous it almost hurt, as she watched Amelia enjoying herself.
โIs there a problem?โ Landon asked gently.
โNo,โ Monica sighed, taking a reluctant sip of her coffee.
โHe may have lost his memory, but so many of his instincts are just muscle memory,โ Amelia thought to herself.
Monica really shouldnโt have let Landon prepare the coffee.
Just then, Paloma chimed in, โMonica, your chefโs yogurt cakes are really something else.โ
โIf you like them, Paloma, have some more,โ Monica said with a forced smile.
โMm,โ Paloma nodded.
Her especially graceful way of eating caught Landonโs attention.
โThereโs something refined about her. She looks so familiarโฆโ he thought.
Seeing that, a spark of delight flashed in Ameliaโs eyes.
โDuh, of course she looks familiar! Thatโs Kayla, the sister youโve been searching for all these years!โ Amelia thought.
โWhy is she hiding behind a mask? Is it because sheโs not good-looking?โ Landon wondered.
โNo way! With genes like yours, Kayla has to be a total knockout!โ Amelia thought to herself.
Amelia had never been able to hide her feelings around Landon, and right now, she was so happy she couldnโt help but break into a smile.
Landon couldnโt help but glance at Amelia a couple more times, frowning. โThis woman is really odd. Have I met her before?โ he wondered.
โBabe, your eyes should only be on me,โ Monica pouted, grabbing Landonโs chin and turning his head back to face her.
She was utterly spoiled, totally willful, and always had to be the center of attention.
โOkay.โ Landon gave Monica a doting smile.
Seeing this, Amelia felt like sheโd just been stabbed in the heartโthe pain was so sharp, she could barely breathe.
โDid losing his memory make him fall for Monica?โ Amelia thought to herself.
โBabe, why donโt you let us girls have our chat? Go take a break and donโt butt in,โ Monica said in a sugary-sweet voice.
Then Landon stood up and walked away.
As he walked away, Amelia gazed longingly at his retreating figure, wishing he could stay just a little longer.
After all, chances for her to see him were so, so rareโฆ
If it hadnโt been for Paloma today, she wouldnโt have gotten to see him at all!
โStop staring. No matter how much you stare, heโll never be yours,โ Monica said with a smug grin.
Ameliaโs heart sank. She was just about to look away when, out of nowhere, Landon suddenly turned around and met her gaze head on.
He looked at her, a trace of confusion flickering across his face. โWhy do you look so sad? Are you a part of the memories Iโve lost?โ he wondered.
Ameliaโs jaw dropped in shock.
โHeโฆ he knows he lost his memory!โ
โAhhh! I knew itโheโs not that easy to fool! Even with amnesia, thereโs no way heโd just let people push him around,โ Amelia thought.
โMaybe, just like Paloma, heโs secretly trying to save himself,โ she realized.
โLandon, youโre the best!โ she cheered inwardly.
Tears welled up in Ameliaโs eyes, and she quickly covered her mouth to keep from sobbing out loud.
Her heart was pounding wildly with excitement.
Seeing her like that, Landon felt a strange heaviness in his heart for no reason at all!
He just wanted to go over and comfort her.
Butโฆ
โForget it,โ he told himself. โIโll wait until I remember everything. If I hug her now, thatโd be way too muchโand Monica would totally get suspicious.โ
So, Landon turned and walked away, his tall figure disappearing up the spiral staircase.
At this moment, Amelia couldnโt hold back anymoreโshe buried her face in her hands and started to sob, her shoulders shaking with the effort to keep quiet.
โAmelia, whatโs wrong?โ Paloma asked gently, feigning innocence as if she had no idea what was going on.
But Amelia just kept crying, not saying a word.
โServes you right!โ Monica sneered.
โMonica?โ Paloma turned to her.
Monica shook her head. โItโs nothing. Paloma, when are you planning to head back?โ
โWhat, youโre already trying to kick me out when I just got here?โ Paloma laughed. โI hardly ever get out, so I was thinking of crashing at your place for a few days.โ
โHuh?โ Monica let out a sudden cry.
It felt like she had just swallowed a bug.
โIf Paloma stayed over, wouldnโt that mean Amelia would be staying too?
โUgh, no way! I absolutely do not want them staying here together!โ Monica fumed inwardly.
โMonica, whatโs with that face?โ Paloma said, hiding a laugh behind her hand. โYouโre about to be a brideโyou should learn to be a bit more proper."
โPaloma, donโt ruin our couple time! Iโll book you a hotel,โ Monica said.
โA hotel? How could that compare to your place? Besides, itโs not even that safe,โ Paloma replied.
โPalomaโฆโ Monica started.
โIโm staying at your place. You handle the arrangements,โ Paloma said, leaving no room for argument.
As Paloma had made up her mind to stay over, Monica had no choice but to agree.
She pretended to have the servants make arrangements, but secretly kept texting Aiden, hoping heโd come to take Amelia away as soon as possible.
Amelia calmed down after crying for a bit.
But sheโd lost her appetite for coffee and cakes. โCan I go for a walk in the garden?โ Amelia asked softly.
โNo, you canโt-โ Monica began.
โIโll go with you,โ Paloma interrupted.
She was already leading Amelia out before Monica could finish.
Monica was left stomping her foot angrily.
โIs Paloma here just to mess with me?โ she fumed inwardly.
To make sure Amelia didnโt sneak any little notes, scraps of cloth, or old keepsakes to Landon, Monica had to stick close and keep an eye on her herself.
The three women strolled through the beautiful garden, each lost in their own thoughts.
While they were strolling, Landon stood behind the curtains on the second floor, peeking through a gap as he watched them, his frown growing deeper and deeper.
After a long moment, he muttered under his breath, โAmeliaโฆ Edwardsโฆโ drawing out each part of Ameliaโs name.
Too bad he didnโt have a phone or a computerโotherwise, he couldโve just Googled her and figured out who she really was.
Suddenly, a sharp pain flared up at the back of his head. He let out a muffled groan, clutching his head as he crouched down.
It took a whole ten minutes before he finally managed to recover.
By the time he got up and looked outside again, the three women were nowhere to be seen.
With a heavy heart, he withdrew his gaze, lay down on the bed, and stared blankly at the ceiling.
โWho am I? Where did all my memories go?โ he wondered to himself.
The servants had arranged the rooms, and Amelia and Paloma ended up staying in rooms right next door to each other.
One was pregnant, and the other wasnโt in the best health, so after their stroll through the garden, they both took naps.
Monica sat alone in the living room, fuming.
Finally, as dusk settled in, Aiden arrived. โWhere are they?โ he asked.
โTheyโre sleeping,โ Monica said, pouting miserably. โAiden, why did you let her come too?โ
โIโll take her away right now,โ Aiden replied, his nerves frazzled the entire way over.
It wasnโt that he was worried Landon might remember somethingโwhat scared him was that Amelia might get too upset and put her pregnancy at risk.
Dr. Shawn had already warned him: this pregnancy was hard enough for Amelia. If she lost the baby, she might never be able to have children again.
And as the heir to the Kyle family, Aiden was expected to have a son, no matter what.
โCome on, letโs get moving,โ Monica said as she hurried to open Ameliaโs door. โMiss Edwards, Aidenโs here to take you home.โ
Amelia had already woken up and was just sitting there, leaning against the headboard, lost in thought.
When she heard that Aiden had arrived, she snapped to attention.
โDonโt be scared, Iโm just here to take you home, thatโs all,โ Aiden said quickly, trying to reassure her.
Monica looked away in disdain. โSuch a pushover! Canโt he be a little tougher for once?โ she grumbled inwardly.
โMr. Kyle, can we talk alone?โ Amelia asked, still propped up against the headboard, not moving.
Aiden hadnโt had a real conversation with her in ages, so he immediately agreed. โSure.โ
โCanโt you just talk on the way?โ Monica said, her tone full of irritation.
Aiden shot her a glare that could kill. โOut.โ
Monica had no choice but to awkwardly walk out, and as she turned around, she nearly jumped out of her skinโLandon was standing just two meters away.
