Listen to this chapter:

โ€œAre you trying to drive me to an early grave?โ€ Maggie clutched her forehead, her vision going dark for a moment.

Kayla shot her a look and played it up even more. โ€œUgh, Iโ€™m so dizzyโ€ฆ My headโ€ฆโ€ She collapsed onto the table with a flourish.

Maggie just stared in silence.

The servants couldnโ€™t help but twitch at the spectacle. They thought, โ€˜Mrs. Kingsley is a force to be reckoned with! If she dares to school Maggie, her mother-in-law, what chance do we have? Better keep our heads down. Jobs are tough to find these days. No way weโ€™re getting on her bad side.โ€™

โ€œMaggie,โ€ Joyce called out sweetly.

Kayla, who had been faking a faint, arched her brow and sat up. โ€œMs. Lambert, being out of a job is working out for you. Now youโ€™ve got all the time in the world to visit family.โ€

โ€œExactly! Now I can come and keep Maggie company all the time,โ€ Joyce replied with a forced smile, shooting Kayla a look.

โ€˜Itโ€™s all because of the wretched woman that Iโ€™ve lost my reputation in the medical field!โ€™ Joyce fumed inwardly.

โ€œGreat. At least Maggie wonโ€™t be bored,โ€ Kayla said, closing her book and heading back to her room.

Maggie was left speechless in front of Joyce, which only made her angrier.

โ€œAn ungrateful kid!โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be upset, Maggie. I came here today for a reason,โ€ Joyce said.

โ€œSo, did you find a surrogate?โ€ Maggie asked, her face immediately lighting up with delight.

Since Kayla refused to use her eggs for surrogacy, Maggie simply arranged for someone elseโ€™s eggs to be used.

Maggie thought, โ€˜Bottom line, the Prescott family must have an heir. When the time comes, Kayla will have no choice but to accept it, whether she wants to or not!โ€™

โ€œMaggie, Ameliaโ€™s birthday is coming up in two days. Word is, the Zuckerberg family is throwing a huge bash, and Tuff is on the guest listโ€ฆโ€ Joyce hinted.

โ€œSo, youโ€™re planning to get him wasted?โ€ Maggie caught on instantly. โ€œButโ€ฆ Wonโ€™t that mess up the, you know, sample?โ€

โ€œMaggie, trust me. Iโ€™m a pro at this,โ€ Joyce said with a confident wink.

Maggie squeezed Joyceโ€™s hand, her eyes full of hope. โ€œIโ€™m counting on you.โ€

โ€œRelax! Iโ€™ve got this,โ€ Joyce replied with a sweet, knowing smile.

Maggie sighed. โ€œIf only you were my daughter-in-lawโ€ฆโ€

Chapter 356

โ€œOh, Maggie, donโ€™t start with that. Tuff is already hitched.โ€

โ€œHe went and married a woman who canโ€™t even give me grandchildren. Itโ€™s so frustrating that I could scream! At least Iโ€™ve got you to help me out,โ€ Maggie grumbled.

โ€œI get it, Maggie. Youโ€™re worried about having a grandchild,โ€ Joyce said, nodding sympathetically.

โ€œItโ€™s not just that.โ€ Maggieโ€™s temper flared. โ€œKayla doesnโ€™t give me the slightest bit of respect! She acts like I donโ€™t even exist.โ€

โ€œWith an in-law as big as you, how could anyone possibly fit you in their eyes? Whoโ€™s got eyes that big anyway?โ€ Landonโ€™s icy voice rang out.

Maggie froze, her face turning red with embarrassment. She shot a glare at the butler. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you let me know we had guests?โ€

โ€œMrs. Prescott, they came in with Mr. Prescottโ€ฆโ€ the butler stammered, clearly flustered.

โ€œMom, watch what you say from now on,โ€ Tuff said, his face dark with anger.

Landon had been worried sick that Kayla might get bullied by the Prescott family, and Tuff had sworn heโ€™d protect her no matter what. And now, his mom was talking smack about Kayla, right where people could hear.

โ€œIโ€ฆ I was just saying whatever came to mind,โ€ Maggie said with a forced laugh. โ€œSo, little Landon, did you just get into Lunova today?โ€

โ€˜Did she just call me "Little Landon"? Wow, that nickname is something,โ€™ Landon thought, his lips twitching.

Landon had never been called โ€œLittle Landonโ€ in his entire life. Even Tuff cringed at the nickname.

โ€œMom, call him by his name,โ€ Tuff said.

Landon waved it off. โ€œNo worries. Iโ€™m a junior here. โ€˜Little Landonโ€™ is fine by me.โ€

โ€œHello, Mrs. Prescott,โ€ Amelia said with a warm smile, stepping forward with Kimsey in her arms.

Kimsey was nine months old, chubby, and adorable.

Maggie, who had been longing for a grandson, couldnโ€™t take her eyes off him. โ€œOh my, what a cute little guy!โ€ She reached out to hold Kimsey, but Kimsey promptly spat a mouthful of drool right in her face.

โ€œMaggie!โ€ Joyce quickly grabbed a napkin to wipe Maggieโ€™s face.

Amelia looked apologetic. โ€œIโ€™m so sorry, Mrs. Prescott. Heโ€™s teething, so heโ€™s been spitting a lot.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine,โ€ Maggie said, forcing a smile.

Maggie couldnโ€™t exactly get mad at a baby, could she? She just had to swallow her frustration.

Joyce, not about to let it go, piped up, โ€œMrs. Kingsley, you canโ€™t let him do whatever he wants, you know?โ€

Chapter 156

โ€œSo what do you want me to do? Tape his mouth shut, or smack him?โ€ Amelia retorted.

โ€œAt least discipline him a bit!โ€ Joyce huffed.

Amelia plopped Kimsey into Joyceโ€™s arms. โ€œGo ahead and teach him.โ€

โ€œHeheโ€ฆโ€ Kimsey was fiddling with his mouth, smiling with pure innocence.

With a baby this adorable, anyone who tried to scold him would look like the wicked witch in a fairy tale. Joyce knew she couldnโ€™t lay a hand on the baby. If she dared, Landon would probably kill her on the spot.

With an awkward smile, she handed Kimsey back to Amelia. โ€œBetter not.โ€

It finally clicked for Maggie. That was why Kayla had been faking a faint earlier.

Maggie thought, โ€˜So thatโ€™s the Kingsley family style! Thatโ€™s how the Kingsleys do things! If thereโ€™s a problem, they face it head-on. And if someoneโ€™s going to play the victim, they make sure to beat everyone to it.โ€™

โ€œYeah. Ms. Lambert, you are not even married yet. How would you know anything about raising a kid?โ€ Amelia said, turning to Tuff. โ€œTuff, arenโ€™t you Ms. Lambertโ€™s god-brother? Maybe you should keep her in line a bit.โ€

Tuff thought, โ€˜Keep her in line? How? Matchmaking? Her parents can handle that. Keep her from acting out? Yeah, thatโ€™s probably what Amelia meant.โ€™

Tuff stepped up, hands clasped behind his back, and lectured, โ€œJoyce, you should be job hunting if youโ€™re unemployed. And quit dropping by other peopleโ€™s places for no reason.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m taking some time off. No rush to find a job,โ€ Joyce replied awkwardly. Underneath her businesslike suit, she was still a princess at heart.

โ€˜Tuffโ€™s changed. How could he call me out before everyone? Doesnโ€™t he care about my reputation at all?โ€™ Joyce fumed inwardly.

โ€œIf youโ€™re on break, stay home and chill,โ€ Tuff added.

Maggie couldnโ€™t take it anymore. โ€œI asked Joyce to come and keep me company.โ€

Tuff looked around, searching for Kayla. โ€œMom, whereโ€™s Kayla?โ€

Kayla had told him sheโ€™d be on the terrace, reading and waiting for him. So where was she? Tuffโ€™d even told the butler not to announce them, planning to surprise Kayla by bringing Landonโ€™s family in.

โ€˜Where could she have gone?โ€™ Tuff wondered.

โ€œShe was here a minute ago. Maybe she got tired and went back to her room,โ€ Maggie said, her gaze flickering as she met Landonโ€™s scrutinizing eyes. She quickly added, โ€œSheโ€™s a bit frail these days, so she needs plenty of rest.โ€

โ€œMrs. Prescott, Kaylaโ€™s not in the best shape. Please look after her carefully from now on,โ€ Landon said, his voice polite but with a clear edge. โ€œIf the Prescott family canโ€™t take good care of her, donโ€™t blame me if I have to intervene.โ€

Chapter 356

He was being courteous on the surface, but the threat was obvious. It was a clear warning, not respectful to Maggie as the elder.

Maggie awkwardly replied, โ€œSheโ€™s doing fine here! Why donโ€™t you go and see her in her room? Joyce and I have things to discuss.โ€

Then, she hurried off with Joyce in tow.

Joyce complained sullenly, โ€œMaggie, the Kingsley family has zero respect for you. They donโ€™t care about the elders at all.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s all because Tuff wonโ€™t stand up for me. Whatever. The bigger plans come first, so letโ€™s let them have their way for now,โ€ Maggie sighed.

She knew there was no way she could get Tuff to leave Kayla, so she had to put up with it for now. Once she had a grandson, Kayla could do whatever she wanted, for all Maggie cared. Sheโ€™d heard the Kingsley family had showered Kayla with all sorts of engagement giftsโ€”cash, real estate, even company sharesโ€ฆ One day, even Landonโ€™s earnings would end up in her grandsonโ€™s hands.

โ€œMaggie, you donโ€™t deserve this!โ€ Joyce said, her voice full of sympathy.

โ€œForget it,โ€ Maggie said, waving her hand dismissively.

If putting up with a little humiliation meant her grandson could be raised as Kaylaโ€™s own, so be it.
