Chapter 366
โJoanna handed it to Marvel, and then Marvel passed it to me. Honestly, I canโt make any sense of it, but he claimed it was an extraordinary book. Here, you take it back,โ Amelia said.
Daniel flipped through it and grimaced. โI donโt get it either.โ
โIf none of us can understand it, whatโs the point of passing this book down through generations?โ Amelia asked, looking confused.
Daniel shook his head. โNo idea.โ
โEven the head of the family doesnโt know? This bookโs gotta be something special,โ Tuff remarked with curiosity, leaning in for a closer look.
He stared at it for a moment and realized, except for what was on the cover, he couldnโt recognize a single word.
โMaybe I should let you study it then, Mr. Prescott,โ Daniel teased.
โNah, thatโs your family heirloom. I wouldnโt dare,โ Tuff said, backing off with a sheepish grin.
Their banter lightened the mood considerably.
As they stepped out of the Prescott family house, Amelia turned to Daniel. โHey, is your wedding happening as planned?โ
โCanโt let Edith down again, butโฆโ Daniel said, his heart heavy with worry.
โJonny is stirring up trouble again, and it might affect my wedding. Since marriage is a onceโinโaโlifetime event, itโll be tragic if anything goes wrong,โ Daniel thought to himself.
โDaniel, maybe this is the chance weโve been waiting for,โ Amelia said.
Daniel froze, then felt even worse inside.
Now that the Prescott, Kingsley, and Zuckerberg families were all in this together, he was sure the crazy Jonny would seize the chance to cause chaos.
โIโll discuss it with Edith first,โ Daniel said, torn between his options.
Neither Landon nor Tuff brought up this chance. It was not like they hadnโt thought of it, but they didnโt want to make things harder for Daniel.
Landon and Amelia stayed temporarily with the Prescott family as companions to Kayla and her husband.
Betty made a special trip to greet them and comfort Kayla.
Maggie was the only one who didnโt show up or say anything.
The way Maggie treated Kayla made Landon furious. He was about to blow up several times, but Amelia always managed to calm him down.
โRight now, finding Landen is what matters most. Donโt stir up trouble,โ Amelia said.
โIf this ever happens again, Kayla will never set foot in the Prescott familyโs house!โ Landon said coldly.
โOf course, of course!โ After a lot of backโandโforth, Amelia finally talked Landon down. She couldnโt help but think to herself, โNot every daughterโinโlaw gets blessed with a great motherโinโlaw. Guess I hit the jackpot this time.โ
โHoney, why donโt you get some rest?โ Amelia said as she took the rare initiative to help Landon out of his coat.
Landon caught her hand and asked, โWhereโs Kimsey?โ
โThe nannyโs with him. Heโs already asleep. I had them move over from the Zuckerberg familyโs place today so I could look after him more easily,โ Amelia replied.
โCould you go get Kimsey for me?โ Landon asked.
Amelia teased, โWhatโs this? Missing your boy already? Itโs only been a day!โ
Landon forced a smile. โYeah.โ
Amelia thought to herself, โHe must be completely exhausted to act like this. Maybe having Kimsey close by will help cheer him up.โ
She turned and walked into another room. After she left, Landon picked up the fruit knife from the table and drew it across his finger.
A thin line of blood welled up, quickly swelling into droplets that pattered onto the table.
Amelia walked in with Kimsey, and when she saw Landonโs bleeding hand, she gasped. โHoney, what happened to your hand?โ
โJust tried to cut some fruit and slipped.โ Landon shrugged, grabbing a tissue to wipe away the blood before reaching out with his other hand to take Kimsey.
Kimsey was already nine months old with several teeth, but hadnโt started talking yet.
Landonโs mother had told him that both he and his sister spoke early. They were saying โMomโ and โDadโ when they were eight months old.
โIs there something different about Kimsey?โ Landon wondered.
โKimsey, did you miss Daddy?โ Landon pushed aside his worries and played with his son, smiling.
โ000 goo go galโ Kimsey bounced energetically on Landonโs lap, his smile as bright as sunshine.
Amelia, worried that Landon might not be able to hold Kimsey steady with just one hand, quickly stepped in to help.
Landon casually held up his injured hand in front of Kimsey. Instantly, Kimsey stopped bouncing and smiling, his eyes fixed on Landonโs finger.
Landon felt his throat go dry with tension.
He hoped Kimsey was the gifted healer, but at the same time, he hoped Kimsey wasnโt. The contradiction tore at him.
If Kimsey had that gift, he could heal Kayla. But those born with extraordinary gifts could never live ordinary lives.
โHoney, be careful. Kimsey might bump your hand. Iโll take him,โ Amelia said.
But immediately after she said that, Kimsey reached out with his chubby little hand and gently grabbed Landonโs finger.
โCareful, Kimsey. Daddyโs hurt. If you grab him like that, it might hurtโฆ Wait, what?โ Amelia didnโt even get to finish her sentence before she was left completely stunned.
Because when Kimsey let go, the cut on Landonโs hand was just gone!
โKimsey, it is you,โ Landon murmured, hugging his son tightly, his heart a storm of emotions.
Amelia was stunned for a long moment before she finally managed to speak. โHoney, this isโฆโ
โKimseyโs an esper, too. He has a healing ability,โ Landon said.
Amelia was stunned.
By the time Daniel got home, it was already past ten, and the night was deep.
Edith and Maisie were snacking while bingeโwatching a show.
โDaniel, what kept you out all day? You shouldโve come home earlier to spend more time with Edith,โ Maisie said.
โHere, take a look at this,โ Daniel said as he handed the book to Maisie.
Maisie flipped through it and frowned. โWhat language is this? I canโt read a single word.โ
โItโs our family heirloom,โ Daniel replied.
โPfft! What kind of heirloom is this? Looks like junk to me,โ Maisie snorted.
โJoanna stole it, and the Mystic Sect ended up using it to whip up a cure for that love spell,โ Daniel explained.
Maisieโs smile vanished. She flipped through it again, but she still couldnโt make heads or tails of it.
Moreover, the book appeared fireโdamaged, with frayed edges all around.
โI want to reach out to her,โ Daniel said, watching Maisieโs reaction.
Maisieโs face went pale. โDaniel, you swore you wouldnโtโฆโ
โThatโs exactly why I need to protect her,โ Daniel said.
Maisie just stared at him, biting her lip, too shocked to say anything.
โThe Mystic Sect still has some real heavy hitters, and now theyโre all under Jonnyโs commandโฆโ Daniel said.
โWait, didnโt Jonny die ages ago?โ Maisie cut in, totally stunned.
โClones, remember?โ Daniel replied.
Maisie felt a chill run down her spine. โJust how many clones are there?โ
โNot sure. So, you understand now?โ Daniel asked.
โYeahโฆ I get it,โ Maisie replied, feeling utterly terrified.
Her mother was bound to the Mystic Sect, and as long as that group existed, her mother would never truly be free, let alone ever grow old with her beloved โhusband.โ
โIf there were a whole bunch of cloned versions of my dadโฆโ Maisie thought, then shook her head hard, trying to banish that horrifying image from her mind.
Edith was confused. โWhat exactly is going on?โ
โEdith, our wedding is still happening as planned, but someone might try to ruin it,โ Daniel said.
โWhat?โ Edith was startled.
Daniel quickly grabbed her hand. โItโs okay. Donโt be scared.โ
Then he laid it all out for her, including how Jonny had stirred up trouble in Lunova and how they managed to bring down the Mystic Sect.
Edith was horrified by what she heard.
She never knew that they had been through countless lifeโorโdeath situations without her knowledge.
Compared to them, she was so blessed.
Growing up, her parents and Joanna doted on her. Now, after getting married, Daniel and Maisie always had her back.
Even when she got a little moody, everyone would bend over backwards to make her smile. She had never truly faced any real danger.
โEdith, is that okay with you? If youโre scared, we can postpone the wedding,โ Daniel asked with concern.
Edith took a deep breath and thought, โOf course Iโm scared. Who wouldnโt be? But when the people I love need me, how could I possibly back down?โ
โItโs okay,โ Edith said firmly.
Daniel was surprised, his heart swelling with emotion. โEdithโฆโ
โI know youโll protect me and our child,โ Edith said with a calm smile, her poise unwavering.
Maisieโs heart ached, and she turned her head away.
โEven Edith can be this brave. My cowardice seems ridiculous in comparison,โ Maisie thought.
She quietly slipped out and went back to her room, then called Joanna. โMomโฆโ
โI thought we agreed not to stay in touch.โ Joannaโs voice was warm, dripping with quiet happiness.
Maisie felt her heart ache even more, her voice hoarse. โMom, the Mystic Sect is still there. Thereโs another Jonny clone in Lunova, and heโs brought backup. Monroeโs been quietly pulling all the elite guys from the Kington Gang.โ
โWho told you that?โ Joanna asked, her voice full of shock.
โMarvel,โ Maisie replied.
โMarvel?โ Joanna repeated, clearly confused.
โHeโs Monroeโs twin brother. They stick together like glue, and even the head of the Kington Gang has no clue heโs around. Mom, did you know about him?โ Maisie asked.
Joanna paused for a long moment before finally saying, โNo.โ
โMom, the Flying Tiger Sect is searching for you. Landon and Daniel intercepted them for now,โ Maisie said.
โTheyโre looking for me? Iโm not part of that world anymore. Iโm no threat to them anymore,โ Joanna replied.
โBut youโve got a highly successful clone by your side. It draws too much attention,โ Maisie said. โMom, itโs not just the Flying Tiger Sect. Iโm afraid others might come after you, too.โ
Joanna felt a chill run down her spine.
Sheโd already seen this coming, so after the Mystic Sect got wiped out, she took off from Dreicean with her โhusbandโ in tow.
They settled down in a quiet fishing village where the internet barely worked.
But if someone was determined to track them down, there was no way they could stay hidden for long.
โMom, please come back. Weโll face this together,โ Maisie pleaded in a low voice, her heart pounding.
She lacked both courage and confidence.
Joanna fell silent again.
The longโdistance call carried the sound of their breathing. It was as if they were just a breath away, but separated by an ocean.
โMom, Daniel promised heโd never hurt you or him again,โ Maisie added.
Joanna remained silent.
Maisie was on the verge of tears as she asked, โMom, have you ever thought about it? What if there were more versions of Dad out thereโฆโ
โThatโs impossible!โ Joanna blurted out.
โThere are already two Jonnys,โ Maisie said with a bitter smile. โMonroe is even more unhinged than Jonny. Thereโs nothing he wouldnโt do.
โMom, please come back. I donโt mind if you bring him along. I promise, Iโll do everything I can to protect you both.
โEdith and Daniel are about to get married, and Iโm worried the Mystic Sect might try to mess things up.โ
Joanna finally wavered. โLet me think about it,โ she said softly.
โAlright, Mom, but please, give it some serious thought,โ Maisie added.
After she hung up, Maisie let out a long, relieved breath.
Now that she had taken this step, the rest was up to fate.
Whether her mother came back because of her or for Edith, Maisie just hoped Joanna would return and lend them a hand.
