Chapter 390
โIโll hire someone to help you. Just be more careful from now on,โ Maggie said, barely keeping her frustration in check.
Joyce, not missing a beat, pushed her luck. โSo, will you come visit me often, Maggie?โ
โYes,โ Maggie replied, jaw tight.
Joyce finally looked satisfied. โThanks, Maggie.โ
It wouldnโt really make sense to have the Prescott familyโs staff take care of Joyce.
So Maggie, ever the strategist, hired two people from outside: a nutritionist and a cleaner.
What she didnโt realize was that she was falling into another trap again.
Just a few days after the contracts were signed, copies landed right on Kaylaโs desk.
Then, Joyce called. โKayla, thanks for working so hard to support me. Maggieโs been taking great care of me for the sake of her future grandchild.โ
โItโs the least I can do,โ Kayla replied.
She was already used to Maggieโs muddled ways and didnโt feel the slightest bit annoyed.
Instead, her calm reaction left Joyce completely at a loss.
โKayla, are you crazy or something?โ Joyce blurted out.
โNo,โ Kayla replied.
โThen whatโs with that attitude?โ Joyce pressed.
โA wife should be virtuousโand Iโve got that part down. A mistress is supposed to be beautiful, but you donโt even qualify. So I guess youโll just have to make do with being useful,โ Kayla shot back, her words smooth but cutting.
Sheโd just called Joyce uglyโwithout even using a single harsh word.
Joyce gritted her teeth in frustration. โYou seriously donโt care that Iโm hooking up with Tuff?โ
โOf course I care,โ Kayla said coolly.
โBut then whyโฆโ
Kaylaโs voice was laced with meaning. โYou know better than anyone who youโre getting in bed with, Joyce. Donโt test my patience. Just focus on checking out Harmony Estates.โ
Joyce broke out in a cold sweat.
โHow does Kayla know about Harmony Estates? Whatโs she getting at?โ Joyce thought, her mind racing.
Before Joyce could get a word in, Kayla had already hung up impatiently and gone back to handling official business.
The Kingsley family was famous, and now that the Lunova branch was finally on track, business was so good that Kayla barely had time to rest.
โSo, youโre finally ready to stop holding back?โ Aaron leaned in, eyes gleaming with mischief, practically itching to get started.
โThe holidays are coming up. Letโs stir things up for the Lambert familyโgive them something to talk about. If youโre bored, go have some fun,โ Kayla replied, her tone light but with an unmistakable edge.
โOn it!โ Aaron replied eagerly.
He rubbed his hands together in anticipation.
โAwesome! Looks like thereโs hope Iโll get to spend the holidays back in Lunova!โ he thought, barely able to contain his excitement.
Landon had laid down the law, and Aaron wasnโt allowed to go home until heโd handled the whole Joyce situation. Heโd been itching to get back for ages, and now, finally, it looked like his patience was about to pay off.
Meanwhile, as soon as Joyce hung up, she rushed straight to the Harmony Estates.
Porter and Lennon had just stepped outside when they spotted a pregnant woman heading up to the seventh floor. The two shared a look. The woman looked like Tuffโs mistress.
โDamn, sheโs already got a belly on her,โ Porter thought.
โAnd Kaylaโs just letting this slide?โ he wondered.
โIs this some kind of Kingsley family tradition or what?โ Porter mused, a hint of sarcasm in his mind.
His gaze grew cold.
If Landon ever got another woman pregnant, he definitely wouldnโt stand for it.
โHey, I think I saw that woman at Tuffโs wedding,โ Lennon said, breaking the silence.
Porterโs scowl deepened.
โBringing his mistress to the wedding? Thatโs bold. Tuffโs got some nerve!โ Porter thought, jaw clenched.
โMr. Zuckerberg, should I go up and take a look? She wonโt recognize me anyway,โ Lennon suggested.
โGo ahead. And record a video while youโre at it,โ Porter said.
โThatโs right.โ
Porter wondered to himself, โNow that thereโll be a video, should I let Amy know?โ
Joyce swept the room with a little gadget, just like she did when hunting for hidden cameras in a hotel.
She was in such a rush. She didnโt even bother closing the front door behind her.
Lennon hesitated. โShould I just watch from here, or should I go inside?โ
His conscience stopped him short. โBetter just watch from out here.โ
Following Porterโs orders, Lennon held up his phone and got a clear shot of Joyce tearing through the place, catching every move.
Joyce, her hair a mess and darting around the room, looked downright ridiculous.
Lennon burst out laughing. โHahaโฆโ
โWhoโs there?โ Joyce spun around, startled.
When she saw it was just an unfamiliar boy, she finally relaxed a little and asked, โWho are you?โ
โI live downstairs, across from you. I saw your door open and thought someone mightโve broken in,โ Lennon lied smoothly, pocketing his phone.
โDelete that video!โ Joyce snapped, her anger barely contained.
โSure, just prove you own the place,โ Lennon shot back.
Joyce was left speechless.
This wasnโt even her houseโif she wanted to prove she was the owner, sheโd have to get the real landlord involved.
But if she did that, it would just expose that she and the real owner were having an affair.
Because of Kayla, she was already a bit infamous now. If anyone started tailing her, sheโd be totally screwed.
โIf you canโt prove it, I canโt delete the video. What if the real owner reports this to the police? Iโll have to hand it over,โ Lennon said firmly.
Joyce took a deep breath and asked, โYou saw me, right? I wasnโt stealing anything.โ
โThen what are you looking for?โ Lennon pressed.
โThis is my relativeโs place. I mustโve forgotten something here last time,โ Joyce said, trying to play it cool.
โSo you gotta crawl around on the floor, searching every inch for it?โ Lennon asked, eyebrow raised.
โYeah, itโs tiny,โ Joyce replied, her voice tight.
โWant me to help? That way, neither of us looks like a thief,โ Lennon offered, stepping inside with a friendly grin.
Joyce was left speechless.
โWhatever, heโs just some random guy,' she thought to herself.
Joyce just wanted to check for hidden cameras as fast as possible, so she said to Lennon, โItโs a diamond stud, super sparkly.โ
โAlright.โ
Lennon dropped to the floor and started fake-searching right along with her.
The place had a really unique setupโaside from the bathroom and kitchen, it was all one big space.
The living room and bedroom werenโt even separated by walls, just a couch marking the boundary.
One couldnโt miss itโa huge bed right in the middle, plain as day.
Lennon had never laid eyes on a bed that enormous before. He found himself gawking, unable to look away.
โAh-!โ Joyce let out a startled yelp.
She suddenly collapsed onto the floor.
โHey, are you okay?โ Lennon hurried over.
Joyce was gripping something small and black in her hand. Lennon recognized it instantly. It was a hidden camera.
It all made sense to Lennon now.
What Kayla was doing that night was setting up this camera.
He found her move so impressive. Someone was right there in the room, yet she could still install things without making a sound.
โItโs over, itโs overโฆโ Joyce muttered, her voice barely above a whisper, looking completely drained.
โNeed a hand?โ Lennon offered, sounding genuinely helpful.
Joyce opened her palm, looking completely drained. โCan you help me see if there are any more of these things?โ
โNo problem,โ Lennon replied.
Lennon started looking around the room.
โHoly crap! There are four more!โ Lennon thought, shocked. โThis place is wired for 360-degree surveillanceโno way toโฆ
