โThe guy from the video?โ Tuffโs eyes lit up as he looked Quentin up and down with obvious interest.
โNot very tall, pretty scrawny. But he actually made Joyce cry like that. Not bad at all,โ Tuff thought.
Tuff tugged at Kaylaโs sleeve and turned away, pretending to retrieve some film.
After Quentin went upstairs, they quietly followed him.
โHoney, what are you up to?โ Kayla said, half amused, half exasperated.
โThink heโs here for Joyce?โ Tuff grinned.
โEven if he is, itโs got nothing to do with usโฆโ Kayla shrugged.
Kayla suddenly fell silent, her gaze sharp as a blade.
Without a word, they moved forward in perfect sync, stopping outside Joyceโs hospital room.
Joyceโs father wasnโt around, and the moment Quentin walked in, they barely exchanged a few words before the shouting started.
โWhy are you here? I told you, weโre done! Donโt ever come looking for me again!โ Joyce yelled.
Quentin forced a sheepish grin, trying to sound humble. โJoyce, even if youโve been using me all this time, I really do love youโฆโ
โWhy should I care about your love?โ Joyce snapped back.
Her voice was ice-cold, completely shutting him down.
Tuff stood there, speechless.
โSo she actually gets it, huh? Then why bother trying to play the love card and guilt-trip me?โ Tuff thought, a little amused.
โJoyce, weโve slept together so many timesโฆโ Quentin pleaded.
โWasnโt it just a deal? I paid, you put in the work,โ Joyce replied coldly, not missing a beat.
Tuff and Kayla exchanged a look. โIs Joyce really treating this like sheโs shopping for a gigolo or something?โ
โYou were even pregnant with my childโฆโ Quentin pressed on.
โI had an abortion,โ Joyce cut him off, her voice flat and emotionless.
โMan, sheโs got her head screwed on straight,โ Tuff thought, a bit impressed.
โWhy canโt she ever be this sharp when it comes to me?โ Tuff thought, feeling a bit exasperated.
Inside, the argument kept heating up until Quentin finally lost it, his voice full of threat. โIf you donโt give in, Iโll leak your nudes! The full-size ones, too!โ
Kayla and Tuff thought, โOh, now I get it.โ
So it wasnโt just her sneaking pics. Quentin had been snapping his own shots too.
She was all about wide angles and long shots, sometimes zooming in for a face.
But Quentin? He was all up in her business, going for those extreme close-ups.
Tuff couldnโt help but think, โMan, this drama is wild.โ
โYou asshole! So it really was you!โ Joyce screamed.
Tuff and Kayla both clapped their hands over their ears and backed away at the same time.
Well, mystery solved. Whatever happened next, it was not their problem anymore.
It wasnโt until they left the hospital that Tuff finally sighed, โMan, thereโs always someone more ruthless out there!โ
โTell me about it,โ Kayla agreed.
Kayla thought Quentin was seriously scary. Maybe he never planned to walk away, not since Joyce first came to him.
โYeah, I bet from the moment Joyce got him involved, quitting was never even on his mind,โ Kayla thought.
Joyce really thought money could buy her anything, even love or a baby, but playing that game always comes with a price.
From what Kayla had found out, the Quentin family was pretty much washed up. As the only daughter of the Lambert family, Joyce was Quentinโs shortcut to easy money.
He was never going to let her go that easily.
Joyce wanted to get rid of him? Good luck with that.
โFinally, sheโs not going to bug me anymore,โ Tuff let out a sigh of relief.
But Kayla didnโt buy it.
She thought, โSheโs like a bad pennyโnever easy to get rid of.โ
At four in the afternoon, Raymond finally came home.
He looked completely wiped out, like he hadnโt slept in days.
If it werenโt for the expensive suit and the entourage of secretary, driver, and assistant, heโd look just like some washed-up guy dragging himself home for the holidays.
โDad? Why do you look so beat?โ Tuff asked, surprised.
Raymond waved him off. โBusy. Sick.โ
Kayla finally met the โgorgeous secretaryโ that Lily had been talking about.
She looked to be around thirty, with sharp eyes and a purposeful strideโdefinitely someone who meant business.
โMs. Sharp, thanks for all your hard work. You can all head home for the holidays now,โ Raymond said.
Leah gave a respectful nod. โYes, sir.โ
And just like that, everyone went their separate ways.
There wasnโt even a whiff of an affair between them. Kayla realized sheโd totally misjudged the situationโguess sheโd let Lilyโs wild gossip mess with her head.
โHappy New Year, Dad,โ Kayla said, stepping forward to greet him.
Raymond glanced up at her, looking a little out of it.
โDad?โ Tuff called out, sounding worried.
โItโs nothing. You two have been married for almost half a year, and I still canโt remember what my daughter-in-law looks like,โ Raymond said, pulling out a couple of gifts from his briefcase. He handed one to Kayla and another to Landen. โHappy New Year!โ
โThanks, Dad!โ Kayla said, taking the gift.
โThanks, Grandpa!โ Landen chimed in, his face lighting up.
Kayla accepted the gift with a smile.
Landen was over the moon. โGrandpa, youโre so cool!โ
Raymond paused for a moment, then ruffled Landenโs hair with a warm smile. โYouโre handsome too!โ
โSo this is how a grandfatherโgrandson bond begins?โ Kayla thought, a little surprised but genuinely moved.
Raymond went to his room to freshen up and pull himself together before heading over to the main house to pay his respects to Betty. All in all, it took another couple of hours before he finally made it to the hospital.
Tuff went with him, while Kayla stayed home.
Raymond had left his briefcase in the living room, so Kayla grabbed it to return to his room. As she did, two packs of medicine unexpectedly fell out.
She picked them up, and her face went pale.
It was not cold medicine at all. These were high-grade meds specifically for treating gunshot wounds.
โRaymond is supposed to be a straight-laced businessman. Why would he have something like this?โ Kaylaโs heart was pounding, and it took her several seconds to steady herself.
She took a photo, then put the medicine back exactly where it was.
โShould I tell Tuff about this?โ Kayla wondered.
As Kayla was still debating what to do, her phone suddenly rang. It was Brian. โHappy New Year, Miss Kingsley.โ
โBrian?โ Kaylaโs voice was full of surprise and joy. โWhere are you right now? Did you get something to eat? Who are you spending New Yearโs with?โ
โDreicean,โ Brian replied.
โOh!โ Kayla said, her disappointment obvious.
โI thought youโd be back for New Year,โ she added, unable to hide how let down she felt.
โWhy would I come back? Dreicean is home for me,โ Brian laughed.
โAre you with your family then?โ Kayla asked.
Brian looked around the big, empty house and nodded. โI am.โ
โAlright then! Happy New Year, and hope everything goes your way!โ Kayla grinned. โOh, and Brian, you really donโt have to hunt for medicine for me anymore. Iโm all good now.โ
โNo way! Seriously?โ Brian blurted out, totally stunned.
โFor real! Iโm totally fine now,โ Kayla replied, her voice bubbling with relief.
โWho treated you?โ Brian asked.
Kayla hesitated for a moment before answering, โIโm not really sure. I was so desperate that I tried everythingโmodern medicine, traditional medicine, even some home remedies. In the end, I have no idea what actually worked.โ
โThatโs really somethingโฆโ Brian said, still a bit skeptical. โIs that even possible?โ he wondered.
โAnyway, Iโm really fine now, so you donโt have to worry about me anymore,โ Kayla reassured him, her voice light and easy.
Brian asked, โSo, can you have kids now?โ His voice was full of concern.
Kayla replied, โI canโt say for sure yet, but at least all the pain and bleeding are gone. If I ever end up pregnant, youโll be the first to hear about it.โ
Kayla kept things vague on purpose, making sure Brian couldnโt figure out what was really going on.
Brian totally bought it and laughed, โLike Iโd be the first to know.โ
โWhy should I believe you?โ Brian teased, raising an eyebrow.
โYouโve been fine for ages and never even told me!โ he added, half-joking.
Kayla was at a loss for words.
Thinking back, she realized she hadnโt reached out to Brian since he left last time.
He was a friend sheโd relied on for years, and she couldnโt help but feel a little guilty about it.
โSorry about that, my bad,โ Kayla apologized, a little embarrassed. โBrian, Iโve actually started a company in Lunova, and Iโm about to open a hotel too. Next time youโre in Lunova, youโll get the full VIP treatmentโroom, board, everythingโs on me!โ
โDeal!โ Brian replied cheerfully.
The moment the call ended, the loneliness hit Brian all at once.
Her illness was gone. She could finally live a normal, healthy life now.
โGuess itโs time I stopped bothering her and let her be happy,โ Brian thought to himself, a bittersweet emptiness settling in.
Brian stepped into his study, where items scarred by fire were arranged throughout the roomโcharred clothes, scorched decorations, burnt furniture, and singed electronics.
If not for the spotless white walls and pristine curtains, oneโd almost think a fire had swept through this place, too.
Brian reached out, his fingers lingering over each item, lost in deep nostalgia.
At last, he picked up an old photo.
The edges were scorched and jagged, but one could still make out a young couple and a little boy, maybe seven or eight, in the picture.
They looked so happy together, their smiles warm and genuine.
โDad, Momโฆโ Brian whispered hoarsely, his voice trembling. A tear fell straight onto the photo.
Flustered, he hurriedly dabbed it away with his sleeve, afraid it might ruin the precious picture.
