Chapter 401

That evening, Tuff returned home with news about the car accident.

โ€˜It wasnโ€™t Joyce after all!โ€™ Kayla thought, surprised.

โ€œI always thought it was herโ€ฆโ€ Kayla frowned, her mind tangled with complicated feelings.

The garbage truck driver confessed right away during the first interrogation. Someone had paid him to crash into any car Maggie was riding in. It didnโ€™t matter which vehicle she took; he was supposed to hit it.

There were two of them, splitting up to cover more ground. One tailgated the Prescott familyโ€™s car, and when he realized Maggie wasnโ€™t inside, he forced the car up onto the curb.

After that, the garbage truck targeted the Lambert familyโ€™s car.

The plan was meticulous and wellโ€“organized. If a taxi with a pregnant passenger hadnโ€™t happened to pass by right then, and the garbage truck driver hadnโ€™t been able to bring himself to hurt an innocent, hitting the brakes early, the Lambert familyโ€™s car wouldโ€™ve been totaled.

โ€œWhoever planned this really knew what they were doing! Did the driver say who was pulling the strings?โ€ Kaylaโ€™s heart clenched as she remembered the bullet wound medicine in Raymondโ€™s bag.

Tuff said, โ€œHe was willing to talk, but he never actually saw the guy in person. All he knows is that it was a man wearing a black mask when they made the exchange.โ€

โ€œNo security footage? What about bank records?โ€ Kayla asked.

โ€œNothing. They used cash,โ€ Tuff replied.

โ€œThat makes it really hard to track down. Honey, what does your family actually do overseas?โ€ Kayla asked.

โ€œReal estate and the import/export of commodities. Itโ€™s all legitimate business, and the competition isnโ€™t cutthroat,โ€ Tuff said, leaning against the headboard, still lost in thought about the accident.

When he first got the report from Maverick, he couldnโ€™t help but wonder if Maverick had really done a thorough job. So he decided to talk to the garbage truck driver himself.

The Prescott family was wellโ€“known in Lunova. Almost no one would dare to cross them. They wondered who actually had the guts to go after the Prescotts.

โ€œHoney, thereโ€™s something you should know,โ€ Kayla said, handing him her phone.

Tuff glanced at the photo and instantly recognized the medicine box. โ€œIs that for gunshot wounds?โ€

โ€œYeah, it fell out of your dadโ€™s bag,โ€ Kayla replied.

Tuff shot upright, his face tense. โ€œWait, my dad got shot? No way, I have to go ask him.โ€

Kayla didnโ€™t stop him.

โ€˜If Dad really got shot, then someone seriously dangerous is messing with us behind the scenes,โ€™ Kayla thought, a chill running down her spine.

As the night deepened, snowflakes drifted down, and the courtyardโ€™s oldโ€“fashioned lanterns glowed softly in the haze, painting a picture straight out of a dream.

Kayla stood at the window, thinking for ages before finally calling Landon. โ€œAre you coming to Lunova tomorrow?โ€

โ€œYeah, weโ€™re all packed and ready to go,โ€ Landon replied.

โ€œMaybe you shouldnโ€™t come after all. Iโ€™m swamped these next few days,โ€ Kayla said.

Landon narrowed his eyes. โ€œBusy? What could you possibly be so busy with during the holidays?โ€

โ€œThere are a lot of guests coming and going at the Prescott family, and I have to entertain them all. Maybe you guys should wait a bit before coming over,โ€ Kayla said.

After a brief pause, Landon said, โ€œAlright.โ€

Kayla let out a huge sigh of relief, then put on a cheerful front and chatted with everyone at home.

But she couldnโ€™t possibly hide it from the perceptive Landon.

After hanging up, Landon said to Amelia, โ€˜Somethingโ€™s up with Kayla.โ€™

โ€œMrs. Prescottโ€™s car accident was no accident? Then we need to get to Lunova right now,โ€ Amelia exclaimed, shooting up from bed the moment she heard.

โ€˜After all the chaos weโ€™ve weathered with them, I canโ€™t help but suspect thereโ€™s some old feud or vendetta behind this,โ€™ Amelia thought, her instincts kicking in.

Landon couldnโ€™t help but laugh as he gently pulled Amelia back down onto the bed. โ€œCome on, itโ€™s the middle of the night. Why are you in such a hurry?โ€

โ€œWe canโ€™t let Kayla fight this battle alone. She needs us!โ€ Amelia blurted out, clearly anxious.

Amelia had once been left to fight all by herself.

The fear of being dragged back by Zachary and the Edwards family, of getting hurt all over again, was still fresh in her memory.

She wasnโ€™t about to let Kayla go through that nightmare too.

โ€œTuffโ€™s there, isnโ€™t he? If he canโ€™t even protect his own wife, what kind of man would he be?โ€ Landon chuckled.

Amelia let out a breath and nodded. โ€œYeah, youโ€™re right. Tuffโ€™s definitely got thisโ€ฆโ€

Landon frowned and shot back, โ€œAm I not strong too?โ€

Amelia rolled her eyes. โ€˜Really? Heโ€™s getting jealous at a time like this?โ€˜

โ€œIโ€™m guessing Kayla doesnโ€™t want us getting caught up in this mess again. Whateverโ€™s happening, itโ€™s no small matter,โ€ Landon said, his voice low and serious.

Ameliaโ€™s nerves, which had just started to settle, snapped right back to attention. โ€œThen why arenโ€™t you freaking out?โ€ she demanded.

โ€œWeโ€™ll stick to the plan and catch the earliest flight to Lunova tomorrow. But letโ€™s keep it under wraps from the Prescott family for now,โ€ Landon said.

โ€œSo, weโ€™re going to lend a hand behind the scenes?โ€ Amelia asked.

โ€œYeah, letโ€™s scope things out first. Give Daniel a headsโ€“up. Weโ€™ll crash at his place for now,โ€ Landon replied.

โ€œGot it,โ€ Amelia replied.

She immediately shot Daniel a message, saying they were coming home to celebrate the holidays.

Daniel was thrilled and quickly started making arrangements for their arrival, including a family dinner.

But Amelia, worried that things might get too serious and Kayla would find out, suggested they keep it low- key and just have a cosy gathering at home.

When Tuff came back into the room, he looked troubled.

Kaylaโ€™s heart sank. โ€œWhat did your dad say?โ€

โ€œHe got shot while he was in Dreicean. We suspect the shooter might be working with the guy who crashed into my momโ€™s car,โ€ Tuff said, his voice tight.

Kayla fell silent.

โ€˜People who keep guns arenโ€™t exactly saints. Just who did the Prescott family piss off this time?โ€˜ Kayla thought, anxiety gnawing at her.

โ€œHoney, donโ€™t worry. Iโ€™ll protect you and everyone else,โ€ Tuff said, squeezing her hand tightly.

Kayla looked down at his hand.

He was on edge, anxious.

It was an awful feeling, knowing the enemy was lurking in the shadows while they were exposed out in the open.

But Kayla was used to it.

Suddenly, she remembered those days back in spy training, dressing up in disguise and tagging along with her adoptive parents to all sorts of banquets and social gatherings.

She paused, a little dazed, and rubbed her forehead.

โ€œHoney, whatโ€™s wrong?โ€ Tuff asked, his voice full of concern.

โ€œIโ€ฆ I think some of my memories are coming backโ€ฆโ€ Kayla said softly.

โ€œOh, are they the good parts?โ€ Tuff asked, his voice tinged with anxiety.

โ€˜God, please donโ€™t let her remember the time I pulled a gun on her,โ€™ he silently freaked out.

โ€œYeah, I guess you could say that,โ€ Kayla nodded. โ€œBut I still canโ€™t picture their faces.โ€

โ€œWho?โ€ Tuff asked softly.

โ€œMy adoptive parents,โ€ Kayla answered.

Tuffโ€™s heart skipped a beat, and he quickly cut her off. โ€œDonโ€™t think about it, or youโ€™ll just end up with a headache.โ€

โ€œWhat are you so worried about? I already told you I donโ€™t blame you,โ€ Kayla said with a reassuring smile. โ€œAnyway, my face is fine now.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s all in the past anyway. Youโ€™re the only one left from the Limitless Sect, so thereโ€™s not much point in digging up those memories,โ€ Tuff said, trying to sound casual but clearly wanting to leave it all behind.

Tuff still didnโ€™t like thinking about that part of his life.

Kayla smiled, deciding not to push it any further.

Tuff was right. Everyone from the Limitless Sect died in that chaotic fight.

She was the only one who managed to survive.

Even if she got her memories back, it wouldnโ€™t matter.

โ€œHoney, is there anything I can do to help?โ€ Kayla asked.

โ€œNo, Iโ€™ve got it covered,โ€ Tuff replied.

Given how urgent things were, after making sure Kayla was alright, Tuff headed straight back to the Flying Tiger Sect.

Kayla spent a long time alone, turning things over in her mind, before deciding she couldnโ€™t just sit back and do nothing.

Digging up secrets that couldnโ€™t be found through normal channels was exactly her speciality.
