Chapter 413

Once Joyce was brought to the police station, her crimes were finally exposed. Dally handed over evidence to the police, proving that Joyce had ordered him to kill Quentin. Joyce felt her world collapse. โ€œHow could this happen?โ€

โ€œMs. Lambert, youโ€™re under arrest for murder,โ€ the officer announced, stepping forward.

The cold, gleaming handcuffs snapped onto her wrists, and Joyce started shaking like a leaf. โ€œNo, thatโ€™s not true! Dally is framing me! I donโ€™t even know him!โ€ Joyce protested, not even caring about the pain in her broken wrist.

Kayla took her time, leisurely pulling out her phone and pressing play on a recording.

โ€œOh, Dally, is it? I wouldnโ€™t say I really know him. He was the one who came looking for me.โ€

โ€œAnd why did he come to you?โ€

โ€œMoney. You get it now?โ€

Joyce felt like she was about to faint. Turns out that chat she had with Kayla at the mall was all caught on tape.

โ€˜Damn it! Kayla had been laying a trap for me all along!โ€™ Joyce cursed inwardly.

โ€œJoyce, you said it yourself. Just wait for the verdict,โ€ Kaylaโ€™s voice was icy.

Desperate to avoid being locked up, Joyce held up her injured wrist for everyone to see. โ€œIโ€™m hurt! I want to be released for medical treatment!โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s just a scratch. Youโ€™ll get all the treatment you need in prison,โ€ the officer said with a sneer.

Just then, Tuff strode in, radiating a chill that seemed to fill the whole room. The cold wind from outside followed him in, and Joyce cried out, her voice trembling, โ€œTuff, please save me! I donโ€™t want to go to jail!โ€

โ€œYou reap what you sow. Thereโ€™s no escaping it,โ€ Tuff said, his gaze frosty as a winter storm. But when he turned to Kayla, his whole demeanor warmed in a heartbeat. โ€œHoney, you shouldnโ€™t have to deal with this. Let me handle it.โ€

โ€œI prefer to handle my own payback,โ€ Kayla replied with a smile.

Suddenly, something clicked in Joyceโ€™s mind and she shouted, โ€œSir! I want to report something! Kayla is a spy! Arrest her now!โ€

Tuff frowned. โ€œAdd slander to her charges.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s true! Tuff, she said it herself. Sheโ€™s a spy!โ€ Joyce shrieked, her voice raw. โ€œTuff, you canโ€™t be with her. Sheโ€™ll drag you down, sheโ€™ll destroy you and the whole Prescott family!โ€

Someone shoved a rag into Joyceโ€™s mouth, cutting her off.

โ€œAnnoying,โ€ Tuff snorted. He wiped his hands and turned to Kayla. โ€œHoney, letโ€™sโ€”โ€

โ€œWhat about all this?โ€ Kayla asked.

โ€œSomeone will take care of it,โ€ Tuff replied. Tuff didnโ€™t like bringing assistants everywhere like Landon did, but that didnโ€™t mean he was alone.

Kayla didnโ€™t press further.

Once they were in the car, Tuff finally spoke. โ€œThanks for letting her off easy.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s for Dominickโ€™s sake,โ€ Kayla replied, raising an eyebrow with a faint smile. If it werenโ€™t for the fact that Dominick once saved Tuffโ€™s life, she would have killed Joyce right then and there.

โ€œLet her reflect on her actions in prison. If she ever steps out of line again, thereโ€™ll be no more mercy,โ€ Kayla said.

โ€œFine by me,โ€ Tuff agreed.

Kayla was indifferent. Joyce had hired a hitman. Even if the Lambert family pulled every string they had, sheโ€™d be locked up for at least ten years. Ten years from now? Theyโ€™d cross that bridge when they got there. To Kayla, Joyce was just a pathetic clown. She could squash her like a bug without even trying.

Just as Tuff was about to start the car, an elderly couple rushed up to them.

โ€œTuff, you canโ€™t do this to us!โ€ the old man shouted.

โ€œDominick is gone, and Joyce is our only child leftโ€ฆโ€ the old woman sobbed.

โ€œHow can you just turn your back on us? Dominick gave his life for you!โ€ the old man cried.

It was Xzavier and Brylee.

Tuffโ€™s expression darkened.

Kayla sighed inwardly. โ€˜So this debt of saving his life is going to hang over Tuff forever, huh?โ€™

โ€œTuff, come out and talk to us! Are you trying to drive us to despair?โ€ Xzavier cried.

โ€œHow can you ever repay what Dominick did for you?โ€ Brylee wailed.

Their heart-wrenching cries stabbed at Tuffโ€™s heart. He ought to get out, butโ€ฆ.

โ€œLetโ€™s go. Iโ€™ll go with you,โ€ Kayla said, opening the car door and stepping out first.

Xzavier lashed out and struck Kayla hard across the face.

โ€œXzavier!โ€ Tuff shouted angrily, shoving him away.

Xzavier staggered back, collapsing into the snow, beating his chest and stomping his feet. โ€œDominick, look at how the people you saved are treating us!โ€

โ€œJoyce hired someone to kill. Thereโ€™s no saving her now,โ€ Kayla said.

Xzavier and Brylee were struck speechless, utterly shocked. When they arrived, all they knew was that Joyce had gotten into trouble with Kayla and been arrested. They had no clue sheโ€™d actually hired a killer.

โ€œThe man she paid has already confessed to killing Quentin. Sheโ€™s going to prison because of her own actionsโ€”it has nothing to do with Tuff. If you donโ€™t believe me, go ask the police,โ€ Kayla said coolly.

Kayla spoke evenly, even as the cold wind stung her swollen cheek. She didnโ€™t even bat an eye, nor did she retaliate. Of course, the only reason she held back was out of respect for Dominick.

โ€œNo way!โ€ Brylee screamed, her voice raw with disbelief.

For a few seconds, the air was thick with silence before Brylee broke down, her cries echoing in the cold.

Xzavierโ€™s voice shook. โ€œJoyce wouldnโ€™t do something like that. Sheโ€™d neverโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you go inside and ask the police yourself?โ€ Tuff, unable to stand by any longer, finally stepped forward and tried to help Xzavier to his feet.

But Xzavier forcefully pushed him away. โ€œThis is all because of you!โ€

Tuffโ€™s gaze dimmed, swallowing back everything he wanted to say.

Kayla took a deep breath. She could take a slap herself, but when it came to someone messing with her husband, that was where she drew the line.

โ€œWhat, you think Tuff would ever let her kill someone?โ€ Kayla finally lost it. โ€œJoyce and Quentin have known each other since high school. She got pregnant with his kid, then ran off to get an abortion. Quentin got pissed and leaked her scandalous videos all over the placeโ€ฆ Are you seriously telling me you didnโ€™t know any of this? She and Quentin were tangled up for years, and thatโ€™s why she hired a hitman. We had no clue about any of it! And you blame us? Is that even fair?

โ€œAnd stop throwing Dominick in our faces. Weโ€™ve already let her off the hook so many times! Sheโ€™s so awful, and sheโ€™s not even worthy of being called Dominickโ€™s sister! If Dominick could see this from heaven, heโ€™d be disgusted by her!โ€

Kaylaโ€™s words shut the Lamberts up for good. They knew just how brilliant their son wasโ€“and just how much trouble their daughter could stir up. But with Dominick gone, they ended up spoiling their daughter rotten. All of this was because Dominick was gone.

โ€œTuffโ€ฆโ€ Brylee began.

โ€œEnough! Not another word,โ€ Xzavier interrupted.

Brylee wanted to say more, but Xzavier stopped her. Arm in arm, the two elders walked into the police station.

โ€œIโ€™ll make sure things arenโ€™t too hard for her in there,โ€ Tuff said, watching the old couple walk away, finally showing where he stood.

The Lamberts paused for a moment but didnโ€™t turn back.

Kayla took Tuffโ€™s hand. โ€œLetโ€™s go home.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ Tuff replied, his voice hoarse.

They came in with their heads held high, but left with their shoulders slumped. Kayla was the one who drove them home. She stayed silent, giving him space to deal with it all himself. She wasnโ€™t about to let Dominickโ€™s death keep him chained down forever.

It wasnโ€™t until they were almost home that Kayla finally broke the silence. โ€œHoney, I was on fire with my words today, and you didnโ€™t even say anything nice about it.โ€

Tuff paused, the memory of Kayla firing back at the Lambert elders replaying in his mind. His chest tightened with emotion. Yeah, Kayla was always so aloof, never even bothering to argue with anyone. But today, sheโ€™d let loose and said everything she needed to say in one breath. For him, sheโ€™d really gone way out of her comfort zone.

โ€œHoney, are you really not going to praise me?โ€ Kayla said, her eyes full of warmth and affection.

Tuff pulled her into his arms, his shoulders shaking slightly. โ€œHoney, thank youโ€ฆโ€

โ€œSilly, weโ€™re husband and wife!โ€ Kayla patted his back gently, her voice soft and soothing. โ€œFrom now on, weโ€™ll take care of Dominickโ€™s parents for him. Weโ€™ll make sure they have everything they needโ€“food, clothes, the best medical care. Weโ€™ll look after them and fulfill Dominickโ€™s duty.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ Tuff replied, his voice thick with emotion. He closed his eyes, the pain in his heart almost too much to bear.

โ€˜Dominick, is this enough to repay you for saving my life?โ€™ Tuff thought, his heart aching.

โ€˜If only you could come backโ€ฆโ€™ Tuff wished silently.
