Chapter 412

The sun shone brightly in the afternoon sky after a fresh snowfall.

Joyce was in an especially good mood, just thinking about how Kayla had finally been "taken care of." With Kayla out of the picture, things are finally looking up for me, Joyce thought, feeling a surge of satisfaction.

She knew sheโ€™d messed up before, and that was why the Prescott family couldnโ€™t stand her. I really need to fix my reputation this time, she reminded herself.

So, before making her next move, Joyce decided she had to reinvent herself. She changed her hairstyle, picked out new clothesโ€“giving herself a complete makeover from head to toe. Finally, she splurged on some pricey health supplements. Iโ€™ll start with Magnolia. Sheโ€™s the softest and the most gullible, Joyce thought to herself. Once I win her over, getting close to Tuff will be a walk in the park, she added.

โ€œJoyce!โ€ The voice was dripping with menace, making Joyce instinctively flinch. She turned around, and her happiness froze solid.

Kayla? Sheโ€™s alive? Joyce thought, her heart plummeting.

Joyce scanned Kayla from head to toe, wishing she had X-ray vision to see what was really going on.

โ€œWhat, shocked Iโ€™m not dead?โ€ Kayla said coldly, advancing on her step by step.

Joyce felt the urge to bolt, but then thought, If I run now, itโ€™ll look like Iโ€™m trying to escape because Iโ€™m guilty. Itโ€™s a crowded mall. What could Kayla really do to me here? she wondered.

โ€œMrs. Prescott, why did you say that? Donโ€™t you think thatโ€™s a little unlucky?โ€ Joyce replied, forcing a calm smile as she shot back.

โ€œNormally, you just call me by my name,โ€ Kayla said coldly.

In a flash, Kayla was standing right in front of Joyce. There was barely 150 feet between them. They were about the same height, but the air felt heavy with Kaylaโ€™s presence. Joyce could practically feel the pressure closing in. She hasnโ€™t even done anything yet! What is this, some kind of supernatural intimidation? Joyce thought, a shiver running down her spine.

Joyce swallowed hard, trying to put on a brave face. But it was pointless. She was totally outmatched whenever Kayla was around. Ugh, why do I always lose my nerve around Kayla? Joyce thought, frustrated.

โ€œMrs. Prescott, isnโ€™t that your favorite title?โ€ Joyce forced a smile. โ€œRelax, Iโ€™m done chasing after Tuff. Iโ€™m not going to fight you for him.โ€

โ€œFight?โ€ Kayla shot back, her tone icy.

She hadnโ€™t even finished speaking when Joyce suddenly screamed. Everyone in the upscale mall turned to look at the commotion. Security showed up in no time.

โ€œHey, no fighting here, ladies. If you have something to say, talk it out,โ€ one of the guards said, trying to calm things down.

โ€œWeโ€™re not causing any trouble,โ€ Kayla said, still holding Joyceโ€™s wrist. She gave the guard a friendly smile. โ€œWeโ€™re just playing around.โ€

Kayla looked totally relaxed, like they were just two besties holding hands. But Joyceโ€™s face was pale.

The guard glanced at Joyce. โ€œMiss, are you alright?โ€

โ€œYeah, Iโ€™m fineโ€ฆโ€ Joyce muttered, her face still pale, sweat pouring down her forehead. As a doctor, Joyce knew just how much danger her wrist was in. If she said the wrong thing, Kayla could easily snap her wrist in an instant. Damn it! How can she hurt me right in front of everyone? And her strengthโ€“sheโ€™s like an ox! Is she even a woman? Tuff must be blind, she thought.

When Joyce said she was fine, the guard left, and the onlookers went back to minding their own business.

Joyce half-slumped, her voice barely above a whisper. โ€œCan you let go of me now?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Kayla replied flatly.

โ€œWhat else do you want?โ€ Joyce demanded, her voice shooting up an octave in frustration.

The guard had barely made it a few steps before he turned back, looking uneasy. โ€œAre you sure you two are really alright?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re fine!โ€ they replied in unison.

The guard scratched his head, still looking confused, and walked off.

โ€œWhereโ€™s the necklace?โ€ Kayla asked.

โ€œItโ€™sโ€ฆ itโ€™s in my bag!โ€ Joyce stammered, her heart skipping a beat. Thank god I brought it with me, she thought.

She awkwardly rummaged through her bag with one hand, finally fishing out the jade necklace and passing it over.

Kayla took the necklace but still didnโ€™t release Joyceโ€™s wrist.

โ€œAre youโ€ฆ are you still not letting go?โ€ Joyce muttered, clearly annoyed but too scared to actually protest. She was trying so hard to hold it in, but the way she looked was so aggrieved and repressed.

โ€œSo, how did you meet Dally?โ€ Kayla asked, her tone sharp.

โ€œDally? Whoโ€™s that?โ€ Joyce replied, genuinely baffled.

She looked completely lost, not a clue what Kayla was talking about.

Kayla narrowed her eyes. โ€œYour accomplice from yesterday.โ€

โ€œOh, so his name is Dally?โ€ Joyce said, realization dawning. โ€œHonestly, I barely know the guy. He was the one who approached me, not the other way around.โ€

โ€œAnd what exactly do you have that would make him seek you out?โ€ Kayla shot back, giving Joyce a once-over full of scorn.

That lookโ€“so openly dismissiveโ€“made Joyce squirm inside.

โ€œMoney. Isnโ€™t it obvious?โ€ Joyce replied, forcing a laugh to cover her discomfort. She might not be the prettiest or the wealthiest, but to a lot of people, she was still a rich girl worth over ten million. If she wanted, there would be plenty of men lining up at her feet.

โ€œSo itโ€™s all about the money, huh?โ€ Kayla said, her voice dripping with disdain.

Kayla couldnโ€™t help but feel sorry for Dally. Killing just for money? Totally not worth it, she thought. Dally, youโ€™ve disgraced the Limitless Sect, Kayla added to herself.

โ€œWhereโ€™s Dally?โ€ Joyce asked.

โ€œGone,โ€ Kayla said coolly. โ€œHeโ€™s Dreiceanian. Went back home,โ€ Kayla replied, her tone icy.

Joyce felt a stab of regret. Whyโ€™d Dally have to leave? The guy was so skilledโ€“and such a psycho. If he failed last night, thereโ€™d always be a next time. Iโ€™d shell out fifty million if it meant getting Kayla out of my way, she thought.

A sickening crack echoed through the air. Before Joyce could even process what was happening, blinding pain exploded in her wrist and she shrieked in agony. Her wrist bone had been snapped.

How the hell am I supposed to perform surgery now? Joyce thought, panic flooding her mind.

โ€œKayla, are you insane? Somebody help!โ€ Joyce screamed, her voice ringing through the mall.

The security guard looked utterly exasperated. This was already his third time coming over.

โ€œGo ahead, call the cops,โ€ Kayla said, her tone cool as she fastened the jade necklace around her neck with effortless grace.

Joyce and the guard were speechless. Seriously, who breaks the law and still acts this calm? they both thought, completely baffled.

โ€œKayla, just you wait! Iโ€™ll never settle things with you!โ€ Joyce spat, her teeth clenched in fury.

โ€œWeโ€™ve been enemies for a long time,โ€ Kayla replied with a cold laugh.

The two of them stood there, locked in a tense standoff, waiting for the cops to arrive.

Suddenly, Joyce realized something was off. โ€œKayla, why arenโ€™t you running?โ€

โ€œWhy would I run?โ€ Kayla shot back.

โ€œYou attacked me on purposeโ€ฆโ€ Joyce said, her voice trembling.

โ€œAnd you even tried to kill someone!โ€ Kayla shot back, her tone icy.

Joyceโ€™s heart skipped a beat. โ€œWhat nonsense are you talking about?โ€

โ€œYou killed Quentin,โ€ Kayla said, her voice cold and unwavering.

โ€œNo! I didnโ€™t!โ€ Joyce protested, panic rising in her voice.

โ€œYou ordered Dally to kill him. Thatโ€™s no different from doing it yourself,โ€ Kayla said coldly.

Joyce felt a chill run down her spine. Did Dally rat me out after last nightโ€™s failure? she wondered, her mind racing. Damn bastard! Just like Quentinโ€“only good for showing off in bed, nothing else! she thought bitterly.

The whole city of Lunova had been buzzing for months about the feud between Joyce and Kayla, both fighting over the same man. Now, the two women were facing off in public at the mall again. Kayla snapped Joyceโ€™s wrist, and the cops were about to haul her away. Juicy drama like this was bound to draw a crowd.

People gathered around, whispering and gossiping. The real-life drama was already trending online.

When Tuff saw his wife getting hauled off by the cops, he totally freaked out. Without a second thought, he left his mother behind and rushed to the scene, heart pounding. Kayla, what the hell happened? he thought, panic rising.

Amelia saw it too and burst out laughing. โ€œKaylaโ€™s such a badass.โ€

โ€œLet me see,โ€ Landon said, leaning in.

The two of them squeezed onto the couch, scrolling through the latest gossip online.

Same clip, totally different headlines. Netizens are absolute masters at stirring up drama.

The couple was cracking up as they scrolled through the gossip. Neither of them even considered heading to the police station. Everyone knew Kayla could walk out untouched.
