Listen to this chapter:

After being away from the office for two days, a mountain of work had piled up. Aaron watched the newly reinstated Amelia with gratitude, expertly rushing about to help wherever he could.

Junella took the opportunity to delegate her gift shopping task to him. โ€œAaron, could you help me pick up some pregnancy essentials and prenatal vitamins?โ€

Aaronโ€™s face lit up instantly. โ€œReally, Mrs. Kingsley?โ€ He wondered, โ€˜Mrs. Kingsley is pregnant! This is incredible news. Mr. Kingsley is going to be a father!โ€™

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Iโ€™m very understanding. Buy the best, most expensive things you can find.โ€ Amelia waved a dismissive hand, feigning magnanimity. She could handle one woman who might be carrying Landorโ€™s child; heck, she could handle three.

After all, being Landonโ€™s wife was a job in itself, one that paid a cool two million dollars a day. Sheโ€™d not only visit Landonโ€™s mistress; sheโ€™d also be her personal maid for the rest of her life at that rate.

โ€œYes, Mrs. Kingsley, Iโ€™ll get right on it. You take care, Mrs. Kingsley, and Iโ€™ll try to lighten your workload from now on.โ€ After saying that, Aaron hurried out.

Amelia stared after him, dumbfounded. โ€˜Wait, does Aaron think Iโ€™m the one whoโ€™s pregnant? This is getting ridiculous!โ€™ Then, another thought struck her. โ€œWait a minute. Does Aaron even know about Landonโ€™s other woman?โ€

Amelia had to hand it to Landon; heโ€™d kept this whole thing incredibly tight-lipped. The fact that he trusted her with this task spoke volumes about his confidence in her. And she certainly wasnโ€™t going to let him down, especially with a two-million-dollar daily rate.

โ€œMrs. Kingsley, Mrs. Foster is here to see you,โ€ her secretary announced through the intercom.

Ameliaโ€™s expression turned icy. She only knew one Mrs. Fosterโ€“Pamela, Zacharyโ€™s mother. โ€˜After all this time since I came back, sheโ€™s finally decided to show her face?โ€™ she thought to herself with a sneer.

โ€œSend her in,โ€ Amelia said coldly.

โ€œYes, Mrs. Kingsley,โ€ the secretary replied. A moment later, she ushered Pamela in.

As always, Pamela exuded an air of arrogance. Clutching her Hermes bag, she stood with her chin held high, expecting Amelia to greet her first. But Amelia remained seated at her desk, her expression icy and silent.

The silence stretched, becoming increasingly awkward. Pamela cleared her throat. โ€œAmy, long time no see. How have you been?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve been great,โ€ Amelia replied, her face radiant. And she truly was.

Pamela thought, โ€˜Being a wealthy manโ€™s wife really does make a difference. The finest clothes, the best food, everything top-notch. Even her demeanor has changed. Amelia used to be so meek around me, but now she carries herself like sheโ€™s the one in charge.โ€™

โ€œAmy, I truly never imagined things would escalate to this point between you and Zachary. Iโ€™ve always considered you like a daughter to me,โ€ Pamela sighed theatrically, settling into a chair without waiting for an invitation.

โ€œMrs. Foster, did you come here for something specific?โ€ Amelia asked, cutting straight to the chase.

A flicker of awkwardness crossed Pamelaโ€™s face. โ€œWell, Iโ€™ve already given Zachary a stern talking to about yesterdayโ€™s incident. I was hoping you could be the bigger person and, well, let it go.โ€

โ€œI did let it go,โ€ Amelia said with a chilling smile. โ€œOtherwise, he wouldnโ€™t have walked out of that hotel room.โ€

โ€œBut youโ€™ve ruined his career.โ€ Pamelaโ€™s voice rose, her displeasure evident.

Ameliaโ€™s eyes lit up. โ€œOh? Is he impotent now?โ€

โ€œBringing Matthew back would completely undermine Zachary, wouldnโ€™t it?โ€ Pamela asked, keeping her voice even despite the resentment simmering beneath the surface.

Ameliaโ€™s eyebrows arched thoughtfully. Zachary had a younger half-brother, Matthew Foster, born out of wedlock. Sheโ€™d met him once in her lifeโ€“a pleasant, unassuming young man.

Though Matthew was raised under Pamelaโ€™s name after coming back to the Foster family, heโ€™d had a tough upbringing. After high school, he was shipped off to some faraway state to manage construction sites.

Only when Zachary officially took over the family business was Matthew allowed to return to the fold.

By then, Ameliaโ€™s life had taken a turn for the worse. The Fosters treated her like a pariah. Matthew, however, often brought her small gifts, offering a bit of comfort amidst the hostility.

On one occasion, Amelia had a raging fever in the middle of the night. Zachary was busy fooling around with Sandra, and in the end it was Matthew that rushed her to the hospital. And now, in this lifetime, he was back early.

โ€œAmy, you need to stop Matthew from coming back,โ€ Pamela insisted.

โ€œMe?โ€ Amelia scoffed. โ€œWhat does your family drama have to do with me?โ€

Pamelaโ€™s face hardened. โ€œYou know exactly how Matthew ended up coming back.โ€

Amelia couldnโ€™t help but laugh. All she did was give Zachary a good beating. She hadnโ€™t even contacted Matthew. Suddenly, it dawned on herโ€“Landon must have been the one pulling the strings.

A wave of warmth washed over Amelia. Whether Landon did it to save face or genuinely for her sake, she was thrilled that Zachary was getting what he deserved.

โ€œAmy, Zachary is a man with big ambitions and a powerful ego. If you take away his inheritance, it would be like taking his life. Please, Iโ€™m begging you, for the sake of how Iโ€™ve treated you in the pastโ€ฆโ€ Pamela trailed off, waiting for a response from Amelia.

โ€œTreated me well? Seriously?โ€ Amelia retorted. โ€œEvery time I went to Foster Villa, you had me slaving away in the kitchen, doing all the dirty work, and then youโ€™d criticize everything I did. Every time I gave you a gift, youโ€™d pick it apart. Thatโ€™s your idea of treating me well?โ€

Pamela was speechless for a moment. โ€œI was just trying to train you,โ€ she stammered, regaining her composure. โ€œTo teach you how to be the lady of the manor.โ€

โ€œWhat kind of lady of the manor scrubs toilets, mops floors, and does laundry?โ€ Amelia shot back with a sneer. Her expression hardened. โ€œPamela, stop with the charade. I know youโ€™ve always looked down on me. From the very beginning, the wife you had in mind for Zachary was her, not me.โ€

Pamela froze, the realization hitting her like a ton of bricks. Amelia knew everything.

โ€œAnd another thing,โ€ Amelia continued, her voice icy. โ€œI havenโ€™t used Kingsley Group to pressure Zachary, but since you brought it up, Iโ€™ll make sure it happens.โ€ She issued a command to her assistant. โ€œFrom now on, Kingsley Group will cease all dealings with any party that collaborates with the Fosters.โ€

Pamelaโ€™s face was drained of color. She rose to her feet, staring at Amelia in disbelief. โ€œHow dare you?โ€

Amelia merely shrugged. โ€œI dare do anything. The Fosters and Iโ€ฆ Weโ€™re long past the point of caring about each other.โ€

โ€œBut you and Zacharyโ€ฆ You have feelings for each other,โ€ Pamela exclaimed.

Amelia scoffed, โ€œAny feelings I had for him died the moment he tricked me onto that operating table. Now all thatโ€™s left is hate.โ€

Ameliaโ€™s words were like a slap in the face, shattering Pamelaโ€™s hopes. With a clenched jaw, she pulled out a heart-shaped red diamond pendant from her purse.

โ€œFine,โ€ she spat. โ€œThen I guess you donโ€™t want Debraโ€™s things either?โ€

The heart-shaped diamond pendant, etched with intricate designs, hung on a red cord, fashioned into a necklace. It looked incredibly familiar.

Ameliaโ€™s eyes were glued to the diamond, her mind reeling. A hazy memory surfaced of a small child, clutching the pendant with a mischievous, โ€œMommy, is this your heart? Donโ€™t sell it. Give it to me, okay?โ€

It was Debraโ€™s. Amelia had loved it, and that was the only reason Walter hadnโ€™t pawned it off years ago.

โ€œThis was Debraโ€™s pendant,โ€ Pamela stated, her chin held high, a renewed sense of power radiating from her.

โ€œAmelia,โ€ she continued, her voice laced with a threat, โ€œcall off your dogs. And make sure Matthew doesnโ€™t set foot back in Norava. Or else Iโ€™ll destroy it.โ€

โ€œYou wouldnโ€™t dare,โ€ Amelia roared, lunging from behind her desk to snatch the diamond pendant. It was the only remaining piece of her mother she had left, and she was desperate to get it back.

Pamela, taken aback by this uncharacteristic outburst from the usually composed Amelia, retreated hastily. โ€œAmelia, come any closer and Iโ€™ll smash it!โ€

Amelia froze, her eyes, bloodshot and furious, fixed on Pamelaโ€™s hand. โ€œGive it back to me.โ€

โ€œ-Sign a document guaranteeing Zacharyโ€™s inheritance rights, and itโ€™s yours,โ€ Pamela said, a triumphant smirk spreading across her face.

โ€˜They all say how formidable Amelia has become, but it seems I was right all along,โ€™ Pamela thought smugly. โ€˜A mere trinket and sheโ€™s completely at my mercy.โ€™

Amelia took a deep breath. Of course, she couldnโ€™t just stand by and watch her motherโ€™s heirloom be destroyed, but she wasnโ€™t the same pushover she used to be.
