Amelia recalled Landonโs teachings: โNever show weakness. If you have one, keep it hidden.โ If she gave in to threats today, there wouldโฆ
Having made up her mind, Amelia strode to her office door and instructed her secretary, โCall the police.โ
โAmelia, are you really willing to give up your motherโs pendant?โ Pamela asked in disbelief.
A cold glint seemed to flicker in Ameliaโs eyes. โWhat good is a diamond pendant? Will it bring my mother back?โ
โBut itโs all you have left of her,โ Pamela protested desperately, holding up the pendant one more time.
โMy mother left these belongings as a memento, not as leverage for your threats.โ Ameliaโs voice was cold, her delicate features hardening into steel. โGo ahead, destroy it if you want. Iโll have you charged with extortion and property damage faster than you can dial your lawyer.โ
Despite her small stature, the sheer intensity radiating from her made it clear this was no empty threat. She meant every syllable.
Pamela finally realized Amelia would rather see the diamond pendant destroyed than give in to blackmail. She knew exactly how Amelia had managed to put Walter and Melissa behind bars. If Elizabeth hadnโt intervened, Zachary would be in prison, too.
Pamela, as a high society lady, would never allow herself to be saddled with such accusations. Her fingers tightened around the diamond pendant, but the courage to destroy it faltered.
โMrs. Kingsley, the police have been notified,โ her secretary informed her.
โGood, Iโll wait.โ Amelia returned to her executive chair, resuming her work. Even if her mind was elsewhere, she had to maintain a facade of composure.
Today, it was either Pamela backing down or Amelia losing. And losing was not an option for Amelia.
As expected, Pamela wavered. Her voice softened. โAmy, why are we letting things get so ugly?โ
โMy motherโs belongings were left to me. Melissa had no right to give it to youโthatโs theft. And knowing that, you still accepted it? Youโre just as guilty.โ Ameliaโs words were like sharp ice, piercing Pamelaโs composure.
Pamelaโs face went pale, the diamond pendant suddenly burning hot in her hand. After a hesitant moment, she decided to concede, if only to save face. โFine, give it back,โ
โNo need to wait for the police, then?โ Amelia arched an eyebrow, a smirk playing on her lips.
โSince Matthewโs situation has nothing to do with you anymore, Iโll return this to you. You can take back that order you just gave. Weโre both Noravans after allโweโre bound to run into each other again, right?โ Pamela said through gritted teeth.
โAlright,โ Amelia replied, accepting the diamond pendant with barely concealed relief. Thanks to Landonโs guidance, sheโd managed to recover her motherโs memento without making any compromises.
But she wasnโt finished. Her eyes glinted as she pulled Sandraโs birth certificate from her drawer. โMrs. Foster, I believe in fair exchanges. Hereโs something in return.โ
โWhatโs this?โ Pamela muttered as she examined the document. Her face went pale. โSandraโs illegitimate?โ
โI donโt know anything about it,โ Amelia replied quietly.
โShe was born before you.โ Pamelaโs expression darkened. All her life, sheโd looked down on children born out of wedlock, and now her son had marriedโฆ
The thought of this scandal reaching her social circle made her stomach turn. Her fellow socialites would have a field day with this piece of gossip.
Chapter 64
โMrs. Foster, Iโm afraid I have other matters to attend to,โ Amelia said firmly, her polite dismissal clear.
Clutching the birth certificate, Pamela stormed out, determined to confront Sandra.
Once sheโd left, Aaron walked in with an amused smile. โWell played, Mrs. Kingsley. One fake police call and she couldnโt get out ofโฆโ
โKingsley Groupโs secretary was sharp enough not to actually call the police,โ Amelia said, her fingers tracing the diamond pendant as tears welled in her eyes. โMom,โ she thought silently, her heart aching.
โMr. Kingsley himself was once blackmailed by Henry with family heirlooms too,โ Aaron smiled.
Amelia shook her head in disbelief. Why does everyone resort to the same trick? Picturing Landonโs reaction in her mind, she asked curiously, โSo what did he do? Did he give in to the blackmail?โ
โMr. Kingsley handled it exactly the same way you did today, Mrs. Kingsley,โ Aaron said with a knowing smile. โYou two really are a perfect match.โ
Amelia froze for a moment, her cheeks flushing. โOh, stop it,โ she protested. โI just learned from the best.โ
Aaron just smiled without saying a word.
โDid you get everything I asked for?โ Amelia asked, tucking away the diamond pendant and getting down to business.
โEverythingโs been purchased. Hereโs the list,โ Aaron replied eagerly, handing over the gift list with a broad grin.
Amelia rolled her eyes. โWipe that smile off your face. Iโm not pregnant.โ
โHuh?โ Aaronโs eyes widened in confusion. โThen whatโs all this for?โ
โItโs a gift for someone else,โ Amelia replied coolly.
Aaron stood there dumbfounded, his mind racing with questions.
โWell, Iโm heading out,โ Amelia said, grabbing her car keys. โNot bad for a dayโs work at two million dollars,โ she thought with a smug grin.
Aaron watched her leave, disappointed that Landon wasnโt about to be a father.
Following the address Landon had given her, Amelia found herself in front of a house in Greenville, on the east side of the city. The garden was a riot of climbing roses, their sweet fragrance drifting through the air, lending an artistic charm to this residence.
Moments after Amelia knocked, the door swung open.
โCan I help you?โ The elderly woman who answered appeared to be in her seventies, but her eyes sparkled with vitality, and her cheeks glowed with health.
Amelia hesitated, thinking sheโd gotten the wrong house. After doubleโchecking the house number, she said, โHi, um, Landon sent me!โ
โOh, I see.โ The older womanโs face broke into a warm smile as she gave Amelia an appraising look from head to toe.
Amelia shifted uncomfortably under the scrutiny, wondering if this woman was related to Landonโs mistress or perhaps a caretaker heโd hired to look after her.
Amelia walked in carrying several shopping bags full of maternity supplies, only to find an elderly woman in the house. โWhereโs the woman whoโs carrying Landonโs baby?โ she wondered.
โWhatโs your relationship with Landon?โ the elderly woman asked.
โIโm his legal wife,โ Amelia replied, glancing around the room. โAnd you areโฆ?โ
Chapter 64
โLandon calls me Diana, and you may do the same.โ
Diana Gaskell said.
โDiana,โ Amelia smiled as she set down her bags. โIs she out at the moment?โ
Diana gave her a puzzled look. โWhat?โ
โYou know, Landonโsโฆ The babyโs mother.โ Amelia felt proud of her tactful wording, believing she was living up to Landonโs generous paycheck.
โI live here alone,โ Diana replied. โI think there might be some misunderstanding.โ
โWait. What?โ Amelia stood there dumbfounded. It finally dawned on her that the old friend Landon had asked her to visit was Diana herself.
Diana suddenly burst out laughing, making Ameliaโs face flush with embarrassment. All the gifts sheโd brought were maternity supplies. Realizing her mistake, Amelia shifted uncomfortably, at a loss for words.
โSweetheart, didnโt you think to ask about who you were visiting beforehand?โ Diana asked, looking through the gifts.
โโฆforgot to ask,โ Amelia lied awkwardly.
Dianaโs eyes softened with amusement. โLandonโs a good boy. If he chose to marry you, he wouldnโt be running around with other women. You should have more faith in your husband.โ
โIโm so sorry about the mixโup,โ Amelia said. โI'll come back tomorrow with more appropriate gifts.โ
Diana waved her hand dismissively. โOh, donโt worry about it. Iโm just an old woman, I donโt need much. Youโre Debraโs daughter, arenโt you?โ
Ameliaโs heart skipped a beat. โYou knew my mom?โ Her voice trembled.
