Chapter 31

“But I’m worried about you,” Mona said to Sally. “I heard Tiffany places great importance on her lost daughter and even bought her a car.”

Sally frowned. “How did you know that?”

Mona, a little unhappy, replied, “You wouldn’t have told me, would you?”

Sally, impatient, retorted, “Don’t cause me more trouble. If you hadn’t asked someone to hurt Lauren, Grandpa wouldn’t have given her company shares. Don’t make things worse.”

“It was my fault,” Mona admitted quietly.

Sally sighed, pressing her temples. She was already struggling within the Bennett family, and Mona kept creating problems. If Mona’s actions became public, Sally’s reputation—and even her marriage to Sandy—would be ruined. Who would want a vicious wife?

Mona sighed regretfully. “I should have sold her to a remote village. I never expected her to return after all these years!”

“Shut up!” Sally roared. “Never mention this again. Never let Dad know you deliberately made Lauren disappear.”

“I know. I’m not that stupid,” Mona mumbled.

Sally knew Mona too well. She knew Mona wasn't listening. Eighteen years ago, Mr. Bennett had taken Lauren to a secret meeting with Mona. He’d had an emergency and left Lauren in Mona’s care. Mona, however, deliberately made Lauren disappear and then told Mr. Bennett she was lost. Mr. Bennett believed her, and everyone assumed he’d accidentally lost Lauren. No one knew it was Mona’s plan.

Although Mr. Bennett loved Sally more than Lauren, Lauren was still his biological daughter. As Mona aged, Mr. Bennett’s affection for her waned. If he learned Mona had deliberately made Lauren disappear, she would be in serious trouble. Sally would also be punished. Even if Mrs. Bennett loved Sally dearly, she couldn’t accept that Sally was her husband’s daughter with another woman.

Inside, only Lauren and Darren remained.

The kick missed Lauren, and Darren was relieved. He didn’t want to hurt Lauren, but he sometimes lost his temper.

“What do you want?” Darren asked, frowning.

Lauren raised her head indifferently. “Think you’re powerful?”

“So, you’re going to teach me a lesson?” Darren replied.

Darren knew using force was wrong, but the Bennett family would protect him, regardless of any injuries he inflicted. He hadn't learned his lesson.

Lauren had never seen such an arrogant person—one who used fists and power to hurt others and was proud of it.

Lowering her head, Lauren clenched her fist, then raised it. “What do you think of my fist?”

Darren was confused. Before he could react, Lauren punched him in the eye, plunging his world into darkness.
