Chapter 40
The Bennett family sent an assistant to Lauren, but Lauren was in college, so they didn't meet. Anticipating her visit with Leo the next day, Lauren called her assistant in advance.
This assistant, Kelly Bush, had short hair and a round face. She was very capable.
The next day, Kelly arrived early with breakfast and gifts for Leo. Because the stores were closed when Lauren called, she hadn't mentioned gifts; yet Kelly thoughtfully brought presents suitable for a four- or five-year-old boy.
This surprised Lauren, who hadn't yet purchased a gift for Leo.
"Thank you," Lauren said.
Kelly, slightly shy and blushing, was visibly happy. She greatly admired Lauren and had already heard about her accomplishments at the company. Kelly knew that without Lauren, the YM brand wouldn't exist. She had worked hard to secure the position of Lauren's assistant.
The breakfast was simple but delicious. Clearly, Kelly had researched Lauren's preferences.
Lauren, not rushed to see Leo, invited Kelly to stay. Lauren then retired to her study to read.
Nervous, Kelly looked around Lauren's home, admiring her. Within the MY company, Lauren was legendary: a top university graduate, a biology award winner at age 20, and the youngest biological scientist to extract a particular substance. Everyone at MY company knew her accomplishments.
MY company had struggled to create a safe and effective yeast-based mask, failing repeatedly. Top cosmetic experts, both domestic and international, spent six months in the lab without a solution, nearly abandoning the project. But after Lauren's three-day consultation, the problem was solved. The experts were astonished by her quick resolution of such a complex issue. Since then, YM had hoped Lauren would assist them with future challenges.
However, Lauren had loftier ambitions and little interest in cosmetics R&D; she only occasionally consulted.
Furthermore, Lauren possessed not only a high IQ but also striking beauty, surpassing even movie stars in Kelly's opinion, though she carried herself with an air of quiet indifference.
Lauren was organizing literature at her desk. Bored and quiet, Kelly, in the small one-room apartment, remained close, careful not to disturb her. However, sitting still became uncomfortable, and Kelly frequently glanced at Lauren, considering offering assistance.
Finally, she quietly approached and asked, "Lauren, do you need help with your literature?" Her gaze fell on the papers, and she was extremely surprised.
Without looking up, Lauren handed Kelly some papers, asking, "Do you know French or German?"
