Chapter 1624
"Please let us transfer Mr. Russell, for his sake and the experiment's," Dr. Blanc persuaded.
Lily looked away, silent, wrestling with inner turmoil. It felt as if miniature versions of herself were battling within. One argued against the transfer, emphasizing Alexander's access to superior care and treatment in his current location. The other insisted on proper quarantine due to the disease's high contagiousness. She remained indecisive.
Dr. Blanc, noting her hesitation, gestured for the workers to proceed. At that moment, a deep voice cut through the tension: "Stop arguing. I'll go with you."
Astonished, Lily turned to see Greg wheeling Alexander toward them. Alexander, in a hospital gown, mask, and goggles, looked gaunt and weak, his cheeks hollow. Yet, none of this mattered to Lily; her husband was conscious. She had left him comatose and unstable; now he sat upright, his gaze weary but focused, his voice strong despite his condition. Overwhelmed, she removed her gloves and immediately placed her fingers on his wrist.
"Lilyโฆ" Dr. Blanc's voice, a protest against the physical contact, broke the silence.
Alexander inclined his head slightly, his gaze fixed on his wife as she half-knelt, taking his pulse. Even through the hazmat suit, he saw her gentleness and strength. He had overheard their argument, a mixture of relief and concern washing over him. He thought of the past few monthsโhis trip to Burnwken, the lost contact, his return, his illness, and his coma. Those months felt like years. Now, seeing her again, he couldn't look away.
"You've gotten much better!" Lily exclaimed, surprised, her eyes welling with tears. Only the reassurance of his pulse truly convinced her of his recovery.
