โRoss, youโre not as young as you used to be. How could you not understand?โ Yasmin looked helpless. โSacrifices are always necessary to accomplish great things. Countless lives were lost building our countryโs foundation. As the crown prince, how could you not understand that?โ she stressed, as if instructing him in the ways of kingship. โThese sacrifices are nothing compared to the great achievements weโre about to make.โ
Disappointed, Ross asked, โSo you admit you allowed Fred to do all that?โ
Yasmin remained indifferent. โI only knew about it. I never asked him to do those things.โ She felt no guilt. Stopping Fred would have revealed her distrust, potentially derailing his research into immortality. Simultaneously, she knew she had to offer him incentives; otherwise, he wouldn't have worked so tirelessly.
โYou only knew about it?!โ Ross slammed the table angrily. โYou indulged him! Didnโt you see how many innocent people died and suffered during the pandemic? Even those in the palace were infected!โ He had traveled throughout Yudonia, shocked and agonized by what he witnessed. Now, knowing his mother had permitted it all, he felt even worse. She could have prevented it.
โRoss, that was an accident. No one wanted it to happen,โ Yasmin murmured, sighing.
โAn accident? So youโre saying itโs not your fault at all? That itโs acceptable to sacrifice everythingโincluding me and Yudoniaโfor your so-called great achievements?โ He glared, demanding an answer.
Yasmin looked at him intently, sighing again. โI canโt talk to you now; youโre too worked up. Why donโt you rest? Or return to Yudonia?โ
Ross wheeled his chair toward her, blocking her path. โIโm not going anywhere, Mom. No drug can grant you immortality. Fred lied to you. How can you lie to yourself?โ
โWhat the hell are you doing, Ross?โ the queen snapped.
Rick hurried in, positioning himself between Ross and Yasmin. โPlease watch your attitude, Your Highness.โ
โWho the hell do you think you are to talk to me like that?โ Ross glared at Rick. After a moment's consideration, he scoffed. โMom, is he your new boyfriend?โ
โWhat did you say?!โ she roared.
โArenโt you afraid heโll become like Fred?โ he taunted.
โRoss, watch your mouth!โ Yasminโs temper flared.
โI can watch my mouth, but can you watch your behavior?โ Ross countered, unyielding.
โFor Godโs sake!โ Yasmin pointed at him, breathing heavily. โLock him up and send him back to Yudonia tomorrow!โ
โIf you send me back, Iโll expose everything youโve done. You might as well kill me!โ Ross shouted.
โShut up!โ Yasmin gripped the wheelchair armrest, bending over to catch her breath.
