Chapter 449
Even Derrick couldn't hide his shock. For people of their social standing, marriage was almost exclusively arranged; news of engagements or weddings rarely remained private. Alexander, considered an eligible bachelor by many women, had never been linked romantically to anyone. He was entirely focused on his work and the Russell family's advancement. The sudden news of his engagement, especially from Alexander himself, was unbelievable.
"Fiancee?" Benedict exclaimed, eyes wide, looking at Lily.
"Enough, Benedict!" Derrick reprimanded him sharply.
Recovering his composure, Derrick politely addressed Lily: "This is surprising and wonderful news. How should I address you, young lady?"
"Hello, Mr. Tanner. My name's Lily Christian," Lily replied, extending her hand. He was, after all, a family friend and elder.
Derrick hesitated. Her name sounded familiar. After a moment, he asked, "You're Mr. Lodge's granddaughter?"
Lily was more surprised than he. The Lodge family maintained a low profile, with numerous extended family members and apprentices; few knew who belonged to the main family beyond a select few. This explained why Lily's background remained unknown after she left the Lodge family. Derrick's accurate guess indicated a close connection to the Lodges.
Lily nodded. "Yes, I am."
"I see," Derrick repeated. "So, you're his granddaughter." Lily sensed something in his tone but smiled politely. He turned to Alexander: "Alex, you have excellent taste."
"Thank you, my thoughts exactly!" Alexander smiled, glancing at Lily. His boastfulness was evident.
"Mr. Tanner," Lily said, "if you don't mind, I'm friends with Benedict and would like to speak with him privately for a few minutes."
Perhaps because he knew her identity, or out of courtesy to Alexander, Derrick looked at his son and said, "Since you've made a new friend, spend some time getting to know each other!"
He returned to the banquet hall, easing the tension. Without him, everyone relaxed.
Lily turned to Benedict, who was studying her with a curious expression. She approached him.
"Benedict Tanner," she said. The young carpenter she'd met was a Tanner from Ruby City. Benedict raised an eyebrow, finding the pronunciation of his name unusual.
