Chapter 47
“It’s not bad. I’m in a new environment and working with new people. It feels like a rebirth, just like the company’s name.”
Lily didn’t mention the mistreatment she experienced at her previous workplace. She knew not everyone would get along with her; some people she’d click with, others she wouldn’t.
Jenny was right. Lily hadn’t made a name for herself, nor did she have much experience. Not only that, but she also had several lawsuits pending. It was typical for companies to hesitate to hire her. It was true that Lily got into Rebirth through connections, but now she had to prove her doubters wrong by demonstrating her capabilities. “That’s good,” Alexander said, leaning down to kiss her cheek.
He was aware of everything that had happened at the company but didn’t bring it up, as she hadn’t mentioned it. He also wanted to see how far she could go on her own, after she’d been so insistent about keeping their relationship private. Alexander knew she wouldn’t disappoint him.
The light touch of his lips on her cheek wasn’t enough. He lowered his head and kissed her lips. The sight of her bright eyes and pink lips darkened his own as desire overwhelmed him.
His firm grip on her waist prevented her from falling to the floor, her legs weak. Her hands gripped his shoulders tightly. Still, she didn’t dare provoke him further, fearing he’d become more demanding. Just then, her phone rang. The ringtone, to Alexander, was a jarring sound.
“I’m going to take a call,” Lily said, pulling away, but he wouldn’t let her go.
Impatiently, he glanced at the phone, “Ignore it!”
“Let me see who it is first.”
His expression made Lily want to laugh. She hadn’t expected him to be so adorable when he was being unreasonable and childish. Although Alexander was silent, his grip on her waist didn’t loosen. Lily’s phone continued to ring, and worried it might be an emergency, she stood on tiptoe and kissed his cheek to appease him.
Before she could regain her balance, however, he turned his head and kissed her. After a long moment, he finally released her. The phone was still ringing insistently. Blushing, she rushed to answer it, but the name on the screen stunned her.
It was Nathaniel. She unconsciously glanced at Alexander, realizing he was looking at her too.
“Do you want me to answer it?” he offered, noticing her hesitation.
“It’s fine. I can handle it.”
Shaking her head, she answered and put the call on speakerphone. Nathaniel’s angry voice filled the room. “Lily! Why did you stop renting the place? Why didn’t you tell me about it?”
