Chapter 624
Ignoring Henry, Justin turned to Jonathan. "The Lodge family business is complex, far exceeding the challenges of a typical company. Given the suddenness of recent events, I propose temporarily entrusting Granduncle Jonathan with leadership. This will reassure others and secure the family's future."
Henry shouted angrily, "Justin!" He hadn't expected that.
Jonathan, equally surprised, was momentarily stunned before laughing. "Well..." He paused, cleared his throat, and continued, "Well, I am getting on in years, and managing the family is arduous. I fear my health won't allow it."
"Precisely! Uncle Jonathan is elderly and frail. Are you deliberately making things difficult? It seems you oppose me, Justin," Henry sneered.
"Leading the family is demanding; the responsibility is immense, requiring a reliable hand," Justin stated, placing the family seal in Jonathan's hand. "Granduncle Jonathan, we entrust the family to you."
Henry had not anticipated this public transfer of authority. His fury was palpable, but before the assembled elders, he dared not openly defy Jonathan. Instead, he gritted his teeth, smiling thinly. "Uncle Jonathan, you're retired. You shouldn't concern yourself with such matters. The family has much to resolve. Perhaps I could temporarilyโ" Before Henry could touch the seal, Jonathan withdrew it. Looking calmly at Justin, he said, "I may be old, but I'm not senile. At this critical juncture for the Lodge family, I will do my utmost. I hope to contribute while I still can."
"Justin, Henry, be assured: the seal is in safekeeping while I oversee things. Once the death investigation concludes, I will return it to its rightful owner!" Jonathan's emphasis on "rightful owner" was deliberate, carrying multiple interpretations. Even Henry's resentment was muted. Lily observed keenly.
Perhaps the entire candle incident was merely a pretext for a power struggle. Whether the candle caused the death, or Lily was the murderer, was secondary. The crucial point was Justin's entanglement in the situation, precluding his leadership. Did this mean Henry's return was ultimately a power grab?
Lily addressed Jonathan, "Since Granduncle Jonathan is now in charge, could you guide me on investigating my grandfather's death?" The head of the family held not only power but also the reins of decision-making. She was curious about their strategy for manipulating the situation.
