Chapter 625
Glancing at Lily, Jonathan cleared his throat. "We must thoroughly investigate your grandfather's death. You both insist on your own accounts, making it difficult to discern the truth for now, but don't worry. Since I've assumed leadership of the family, I will provide a satisfactory answer."
Lily, eager to move forward, sneered. "Granduncle, everyone understands the truth, but a conclusion is necessary. We mustn't delay Grandpa's burial. There should be a time limit, shouldn't there?"
Jonathan gave her a sidelong glance. "Why are you so anxious? Are you guilty?"
"Arguing is pointless," Lily retorted. "My guilt is irrelevant. What matters is the result. I only want to discover the cause of Grandpa's death. The elders are here. Since Granduncle Jonathan is now in charge, I believe I can convince everyone with actions, not empty promises. How about three days?"
"Only three?" Jonathan asked.
Before Jonathan could respond, Henry interrupted. "All right! Three days! Still, Lily, you may only remain here for these three days. No one is to leave Sapphine within the next three days to prevent anyone from escaping."
He then looked at Justin, slightly provocatively. "Justin, what do you think?"
Justin nodded impassively. "I have no opinion."
The matter settled, for the moment, Lily gazed at her grandfather's posthumous photograph. Regardless of what transpired, she would seek justice for him. The elders dispersed. Lily quickly intercepted Justin. "Justin, youโ"
He interrupted, sighing softly. "Didn't I tell you not to come back? Forget it. You can stay a while. You must be tired from your journey. Rest well."
His words were meaningful. She glanced around; the family was busy, yet their ears perked up.
"Okay, let me know if you need me," she said, leaving.
Alexander sat calmly in the living room, drinking tea, exhibiting no anxiety. As Lily exited, she seemed to sense his presence, her gaze meeting his. A wave of relief washed over her.
She approached him quickly. "Did they give you a hard time?"
Alexander smiled. "I'm your husband, and therefore part of the family. Why would they?" He continued, "Have you paid your respects to your grandfather?"
"Yes," Lily nodded. "Let's stay here for the next two days."
"Okay," Alexander replied, without further inquiry.
The property was extensive; even with elders occupying the main and outbuildings, ample space remained. Most elders resided in Sapphine; the agreement prohibited departure from the city, but not from their homes. Thus, most city residents returned home.
Henry remained in the main house, appearing calm, though the underlying tension was palpable. The Lodge family disciples, instead of their usual kickboxing practice, mourned; they stood near a window, gazing out at the deserted courtyard. The stark contrast to the usual order brought a wave of nostalgia for their rigorous training.
Alexander draped a coat over Lily's shoulders from behind, pulling her into his embrace. "Although the weather is warming, mornings and evenings remain chilly," he murmured.
Lily rested her head against him, gazing at the scene outside. "I just feel that some people's hearts are colder than winter."
