Lily stared up at him, unable to respond.

"Frankly, I'm not patient, and children are troublesome. However, I would look forward to one if it were ours."

He held her hand. "Why? Do you want a child now?"

Gazing into his eyes, Lily wanted to sigh. Whether she wanted a child or not, it was already here. His warm hand in hers gradually relaxed her. After all, he had made her feel safe for over a year. He had a right to know, as Jenny had emphasized. She gulped and mustered her courage.

"I have something to tell you."

"Yes?"

"I might be pregnant."

The words brought a sudden relief. She looked nervously at him, anticipating his response. To her surprise, Alexander was neither shocked nor overjoyed. His reaction seemed overly calm, as if he were listening to an unrelated story.

"Okay," he nodded. That was it.

"Okay?" she echoed, shocked. "That's all you're going to say?"

Depending on his desire for a child, she expected either elation or the same uncertainty she felt. His calmness was unexpected. Seeing her bewilderment, Alexander smiled and touched her nose.

"I'm going to tell you something, but don't be angry."

"About what?"

"I already knew."

Lily was so shocked she almost stuttered. "What do you mean you knew? Before I told you?"

His nod confirmed her disbelief. "When did you find out, and how? I only found out yesterday. Did you?" A thought struck her. "Did you buy the company gossip?"

The gossip wasn't true, even if Lily was pregnant.

"Gossip? What gossip?"

Apparently, he hadn't heard it. "You didn't hear the gossip? Then how did you find out?"

"There's gossip at the company? The staff must have too much free time!" His eyes narrowed, his voice stern, then softened as he looked back at her. "I saw it myself. You acted strangely yesterday, and then I found something curious in the trash."

"You looked through the trash?" She'd wrapped the pregnancy test before discarding it, but he'd still found it. She could hardly imagine him doing that.

Palming his forehead, Alexander said, "No, I found it accidentally! I opened the trash can, saw part of the test kit, and got curious." With her odd behavior yesterday, it was natural he'd investigate.
