Chapter 128

Now, I simply open my hands, letting everything come, and letting everything go. With nothing weighing on my mind, I felt light as air, and the beauty before me was all the more mesmerizing. I sat on a chair, tree shadows swaying gently around me.

Suddenly, someone stepped into the sunlight, half-blocking it. I half-squinted up, feeling a little annoyed.

โ€œMs. Murphy, here by yourself?โ€ A deep, pleasant voice sounded almost dreamlike to me.

My eyes widened again and again, and as they adjusted to the light, I finally realized that Nathan was standing right in front of me.

โ€œNathan?โ€ I still felt like he wasnโ€™t real. It wasnโ€™t until he sat down beside me, the chair giving a gentle wobble, that it finally sank in.

โ€œSorry, I followed you,โ€ Nathan said. The first thing he did was actually explain himself.

โ€œHow did you even manage to follow me?โ€ I asked, curiosity getting the better of me.

Nathan just gave me a mysterious smile and stayed silent, tilting his head back to gaze at the shifting shadows in the trees above us.

โ€œBye, Iโ€™ll be going now,โ€ I said, making it clear I wasnโ€™t going to make this easy for him.

Suddenly, Nathan reached out and grabbed my hand. His touch sent a jolt through me, and no matter how hard I tried to pull away, I couldnโ€™t break free. With a bit of force, he pulled me right back down into my seat.

โ€œMs. Murphy, do you know why I decided to work with Mr. Holcomb?โ€ Nathanโ€™s voice was so soft it almost felt like a whisper.

My heart skipped a beat, and I turned to look at him. Nathanโ€™s clear eyes, like glowing amber, were impossibly beautiful.

Feeling a little embarrassed under my gaze, Nathan looked away and let out a soft laugh. โ€œOf course, itโ€™s because of you.

โ€œI couldnโ€™t think of any other way to get closer to you. And then, Mr. Holcomb needed a settlement system, and my company just happened to develop one. Everything just fell into place.โ€

By the end, his voice had grown a bit hoarse. Then, he said softly, โ€œBack then, you gave me 250 thousand dollars to pay off my familyโ€™s debts and help bury my grandmother. You saved me from hitting rock bottom. What I owe you is so much more than that.โ€

Suddenly, memories from my previous life flickered through my mind. I vaguely remembered the charity sending me some photos to update me on the people Iโ€™d helped. In one of them, there was a thin figure bowing at the doorway, while someone else was lifting a coffin out of the house.

I whipped my head around to look at Nathan, realizing that in my previous life, I had seen him before, too, but all I ever saw was his back as he bowed there.

โ€œYou know, most people in this world are still good at heart,โ€ I said with a gentle smile, trying to comfort him. โ€œAnyway, letโ€™s not bring up the past anymore. I believe your grandmother is watching over you from aboveโ€“she can see everything youโ€™ve achieved, and I know sheโ€™d be proud of you.โ€

โ€œYeah, I think my grandmother would want to see me get married, have kids, build my career, and start a family,โ€ Nathan said, his deep gaze fixed intently on me.

Iโ€™ve been around the block. I knew exactly what that look in his eyes meant.

Honestly, innocent guys were the most dangerous flirts. Just those eyes, saying everything and nothing at once, were enough to send my heart into chaos.

I said vaguely, trying to keep things light, โ€œDonโ€™t get too caught up in this. You really shouldnโ€™t set your hopes on someone whoโ€™s already married."

But Nathanโ€™s voice was unusually resolute. โ€œSooner or later, youโ€™re going to get a divorce, arenโ€™t you?โ€

Whoa, whatโ€™s with this guy and that kind of confidence? I thought, startled. Is he reading my mind or something?

โ€œThe whole companyโ€™s been buzzing about Mr. Holcomb and Tracy. Donโ€™t tell me you really donโ€™t know,โ€ Nathan said, his voice full of wounded grievance, looking so pitiful it almost made one want to comfort him.

โ€œYou really know how to hit a sore spot.โ€ I shot him a glare, but he just looked back at me, his eyes full of concern and heartache.

My fingers tightened around the armrest as I gave him my answer. โ€œYeah, you got it. Sooner or later, Iโ€™m going to divorce him."
