Chapter 129
Nathanโs usually deep eyes suddenly seemed to catch the sunlight, sweeping away all his earlier gloom. He grinned at me and teased, โSo when exactly is sooner or later? Tomorrow morning, or tomorrow night?โ
I shot him an exasperated look. โDo you really think getting divorced is as easy as grabbing a meal or taking a nap? What, you think I can just pick morning or night like itโs nothing?โ
Nathan actually seemed to enjoy getting scolded by me. He grinned like a fool for a bit, then got all serious again. โSo, now that you know theyโre close, are you still sleeping with Mr. Holcomb?โ
His question really left me stumped.
Sure, Jared was a total player, but one couldnโt deny he was in great shape and had stamina to spare.
Besides, I never claimed to be some chaste saint. If the opportunity was right there, why not take it? Honestly, he was still way better than some random gigolo out there.
โUh, thatโs a bit much. Donโt you think?โ I coughed lightly, trying to end the topic.
โSo, you still are, huh?โ Nathan looked like he was instantly swallowed up by jealousy.
I turned to look at him, thinking, โNathan runs his own tech company, but how can he still be such a softie?โ
โOnce youโve got a woman, youโll understand a lot more. Open your mind a little,โ I said, getting up and walking away. Nathan trailed after me, step for step, like a clingy dog I just couldnโt shake off.
Iโd walk a bit, then stop, and heโd do exactly the same, matching me move for move.
I checked the time. It was already afternoon, and my stomach was growling.
I turned to Nathan and said, โLetโs split up here, okay? And donโt follow me back to the hotel. Jaredโs not an idiot; heโs already suspicious about us. Well, not that thereโs really anything going on between us anyway.โ
โI like you. Doesnโt that count for something?โ Nathan was always so bold and straightforward, which made me, a married woman, look almost pure by comparison.
โIt counts, but just because you like me doesnโt mean we can just mess around,โ I said seriously, meeting his eyes. โNathan, just wait a little longer. Once Iโm divorced, Iโll come find you first.โ
โReally?โ Nathanโs eyes lit up, like heโd just won a prize.
โYeah,โ I said, smiling and nodding. โBut let me make it clear up front. Iโm not getting married again.โ
Nathanโs expression froze. He looked at me, a little hurt. โIโm not Jared. Iโm not the type to fool around and then just walk away.โ
โWell, I might.โ I shot back with a smirk. Living life like a game was just who I was.
Nathan looked at me, completely stunned.
I couldnโt help but laugh out loud, teasing him and making him blush. I really was turning into a bit of a bad girl.
Nathanโs handsome face flushed bright red, whether from embarrassment or frustration, I couldnโt tell. His big hands tightened a little, almost unconsciously. โFine, no marriage, but weโre still going to be together.โ
His charming eyes actually put me in a pretty good mood, so I gave him a casual promise. โYeah, I will. Iโm off now.โ
Nathan hurried over to open the car door for me. โDrive safe, okay? Shoot me a text when you get there.โ
โSorry, no texts. I donโt want to leave any evidence,โ I said as I slipped into the car.
By the time I got back to the hotel, it was already past four in the afternoon, and Jared was nowhere to be seen.
I had the hotel send up some food and booked a room for myself. I wasnโt going to stay with Jared anymore. If he had the nerve to come looking for me, Iโd just shove that packet of medicine Sally gave me down his throat.
I was sure Sally just panicked and grabbed some so-called family remedy from a random back-alley doctor. It probably didnโt work at allโheck, it might even be toxic.
I was munching on my food in the hotel room when Jared called.
