Chapter 129

Nathanโ€™s usually deep eyes suddenly seemed to catch the sunlight, sweeping away all his earlier gloom. He grinned at me and teased, โ€œSo when exactly is sooner or later? Tomorrow morning, or tomorrow night?โ€

I shot him an exasperated look. โ€œDo you really think getting divorced is as easy as grabbing a meal or taking a nap? What, you think I can just pick morning or night like itโ€™s nothing?โ€

Nathan actually seemed to enjoy getting scolded by me. He grinned like a fool for a bit, then got all serious again. โ€œSo, now that you know theyโ€™re close, are you still sleeping with Mr. Holcomb?โ€

His question really left me stumped.

Sure, Jared was a total player, but one couldnโ€™t deny he was in great shape and had stamina to spare.

Besides, I never claimed to be some chaste saint. If the opportunity was right there, why not take it? Honestly, he was still way better than some random gigolo out there.

โ€œUh, thatโ€™s a bit much. Donโ€™t you think?โ€ I coughed lightly, trying to end the topic.

โ€œSo, you still are, huh?โ€ Nathan looked like he was instantly swallowed up by jealousy.

I turned to look at him, thinking, โ€˜Nathan runs his own tech company, but how can he still be such a softie?โ€™

โ€œOnce youโ€™ve got a woman, youโ€™ll understand a lot more. Open your mind a little,โ€ I said, getting up and walking away. Nathan trailed after me, step for step, like a clingy dog I just couldnโ€™t shake off.

Iโ€™d walk a bit, then stop, and heโ€™d do exactly the same, matching me move for move.

I checked the time. It was already afternoon, and my stomach was growling.

I turned to Nathan and said, โ€œLetโ€™s split up here, okay? And donโ€™t follow me back to the hotel. Jaredโ€™s not an idiot; heโ€™s already suspicious about us. Well, not that thereโ€™s really anything going on between us anyway.โ€

โ€œI like you. Doesnโ€™t that count for something?โ€ Nathan was always so bold and straightforward, which made me, a married woman, look almost pure by comparison.

โ€œIt counts, but just because you like me doesnโ€™t mean we can just mess around,โ€ I said seriously, meeting his eyes. โ€œNathan, just wait a little longer. Once Iโ€™m divorced, Iโ€™ll come find you first.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ Nathanโ€™s eyes lit up, like heโ€™d just won a prize.

โ€œYeah,โ€ I said, smiling and nodding. โ€œBut let me make it clear up front. Iโ€™m not getting married again.โ€

Nathanโ€™s expression froze. He looked at me, a little hurt. โ€œIโ€™m not Jared. Iโ€™m not the type to fool around and then just walk away.โ€

โ€œWell, I might.โ€ I shot back with a smirk. Living life like a game was just who I was.

Nathan looked at me, completely stunned.

I couldnโ€™t help but laugh out loud, teasing him and making him blush. I really was turning into a bit of a bad girl.

Nathanโ€™s handsome face flushed bright red, whether from embarrassment or frustration, I couldnโ€™t tell. His big hands tightened a little, almost unconsciously. โ€œFine, no marriage, but weโ€™re still going to be together.โ€

His charming eyes actually put me in a pretty good mood, so I gave him a casual promise. โ€œYeah, I will. Iโ€™m off now.โ€

Nathan hurried over to open the car door for me. โ€œDrive safe, okay? Shoot me a text when you get there.โ€

โ€œSorry, no texts. I donโ€™t want to leave any evidence,โ€ I said as I slipped into the car.

By the time I got back to the hotel, it was already past four in the afternoon, and Jared was nowhere to be seen.

I had the hotel send up some food and booked a room for myself. I wasnโ€™t going to stay with Jared anymore. If he had the nerve to come looking for me, Iโ€™d just shove that packet of medicine Sally gave me down his throat.

I was sure Sally just panicked and grabbed some so-called family remedy from a random back-alley doctor. It probably didnโ€™t work at allโ€“heck, it might even be toxic.

I was munching on my food in the hotel room when Jared called.
