Chapter 256
Looking at Ryanโs innocent face, rage bubbled up inside me. I sneered, โYou lied to me so easily, just because you liked being taken care of by me?โ
Ryan said, โNo, Iโve always felt guilty. Iโve always wanted to do something to make it up to you, but in your eyes, Iโm just a poor kid. And I did get the bonus you sent me. Thank you, Victoria.โ
โWhat did you just call me?โ I asked.
Ryan replied, โIโm not going back to work, and you probably donโt want me around anymore. So I wonโt call you Ms. Murphy. Since you already knew my feelings, it just feels right to use your name.โ
โNo, donโt call me that. Iโm three years older than you. Show me some respect,โ I said.
Ryan said, โYou know what they sayโif a womanโs three years older, sheโs a treasure.โ
I had been angry, but now I couldnโt help but laugh. I said, โRyan, Iโm not into younger guys. Donโt waste your time.โ
As I spoke, I sized him up. He was goodโlooking and in great shape, but the fact that he was younger than me just didnโt sit right with me.
Ryan said, โHow do you know Iโm too young for you if you havenโt even tried? Whatโs wrong with being a bit younger? I can bring you emotional value. I wonโt piss you off like Jared does. Iโll only make you happy.โ
My eyes widened in surprise as I looked at him. Only now did I see that all his innocence was an act. Beneath that beautiful face lurked one sly fox.
Ryan held my gaze and said, โI know you divorced Jared.โ
I narrowed my eyes, and just then, my phone rang. It was a call from Jared. I walked over to the floorโtoโceiling window and answered, โWhatโs up?โ
Jared said, โI found out why those stateโowned companies signed a deal with the hotel last time.โ
โWhose connection was it?โ I asked.
Jared said, โThey said the guyโs last name is Jennings, and heโs got ties in Braylin. Victoria, when did you go and make a connection that strong without me knowing?โ
I turned to look at Ryan, who was leaning against the door.
At that moment, Ryan looked like a puppy, giving me those soulful eyes, his long fingers twisting together.
โAre you sure his last name is Jennings?โ I asked, already having a pretty good idea who it was.
โYeah, Iโm sure. Who is this guy? What kind of deal did you make with him?โ Jared pressed.
Just then, Ryan came up behind me and asked, โVictoria, want some midnight snacks?โ
I didnโt see that coming at all, and before I could stop him, it was already too lateโJared had heard his voice.
Jared instantly demanded, โIs there a guy with you?โ
I shot Ryan a glare, and he just blinked back at me, all innocent.
I replied, โAlright, letโs talk about this when Iโm back in Hachester. Iโve got things to handle here, so Iโm hanging up now.โ With that, I ended the call and turned, fixing my gaze on Ryan.
Ryan looked at me, playing innocent. He said, โVictoria, does Jared think you canโt find anyone better than him now that youโre divorced?โ
โRyan, just tell meโdid you have anything to do with those stateโowned companies in Hachester suddenly teaming up with the hotel?โ I asked.
Ryan played dumb. He said, โI have no idea what youโre talking about.โ
I said, โIf you donโt tell me the truth right now, Iโll not only fire you, but weโre done being friends.โ
Ryanโs eyes flickered, and he lowered his head. He said, โYeah, I called in a few favors. Victoria, I couldnโt stand people looking down on you.
โIโve overheard them badโmouthing youโsaying you only got the job because youโre Jaredโs wife, that the hotel will crash within a year. So I made sure they signed a threeโyear contract.โ
I was honestly stunned. I never imagined Ryan would go this far to help me.
