Chapter 256

Looking at Ryanโ€™s innocent face, rage bubbled up inside me. I sneered, โ€œYou lied to me so easily, just because you liked being taken care of by me?โ€

Ryan said, โ€œNo, Iโ€™ve always felt guilty. Iโ€™ve always wanted to do something to make it up to you, but in your eyes, Iโ€™m just a poor kid. And I did get the bonus you sent me. Thank you, Victoria.โ€

โ€œWhat did you just call me?โ€ I asked.

Ryan replied, โ€œIโ€™m not going back to work, and you probably donโ€™t want me around anymore. So I wonโ€™t call you Ms. Murphy. Since you already knew my feelings, it just feels right to use your name.โ€

โ€œNo, donโ€™t call me that. Iโ€™m three years older than you. Show me some respect,โ€ I said.

Ryan said, โ€œYou know what they sayโ€“if a womanโ€™s three years older, sheโ€™s a treasure.โ€

I had been angry, but now I couldnโ€™t help but laugh. I said, โ€œRyan, Iโ€™m not into younger guys. Donโ€™t waste your time.โ€

As I spoke, I sized him up. He was goodโ€“looking and in great shape, but the fact that he was younger than me just didnโ€™t sit right with me.

Ryan said, โ€œHow do you know Iโ€™m too young for you if you havenโ€™t even tried? Whatโ€™s wrong with being a bit younger? I can bring you emotional value. I wonโ€™t piss you off like Jared does. Iโ€™ll only make you happy.โ€

My eyes widened in surprise as I looked at him. Only now did I see that all his innocence was an act. Beneath that beautiful face lurked one sly fox.

Ryan held my gaze and said, โ€œI know you divorced Jared.โ€

I narrowed my eyes, and just then, my phone rang. It was a call from Jared. I walked over to the floorโ€“toโ€“ceiling window and answered, โ€œWhatโ€™s up?โ€

Jared said, โ€œI found out why those stateโ€“owned companies signed a deal with the hotel last time.โ€

โ€œWhose connection was it?โ€ I asked.

Jared said, โ€œThey said the guyโ€™s last name is Jennings, and heโ€™s got ties in Braylin. Victoria, when did you go and make a connection that strong without me knowing?โ€

I turned to look at Ryan, who was leaning against the door.

At that moment, Ryan looked like a puppy, giving me those soulful eyes, his long fingers twisting together.

โ€œAre you sure his last name is Jennings?โ€ I asked, already having a pretty good idea who it was.

โ€œYeah, Iโ€™m sure. Who is this guy? What kind of deal did you make with him?โ€ Jared pressed.

Just then, Ryan came up behind me and asked, โ€œVictoria, want some midnight snacks?โ€

I didnโ€™t see that coming at all, and before I could stop him, it was already too lateโ€“Jared had heard his voice.

Jared instantly demanded, โ€œIs there a guy with you?โ€

I shot Ryan a glare, and he just blinked back at me, all innocent.

I replied, โ€œAlright, letโ€™s talk about this when Iโ€™m back in Hachester. Iโ€™ve got things to handle here, so Iโ€™m hanging up now.โ€ With that, I ended the call and turned, fixing my gaze on Ryan.

Ryan looked at me, playing innocent. He said, โ€œVictoria, does Jared think you canโ€™t find anyone better than him now that youโ€™re divorced?โ€

โ€œRyan, just tell meโ€“did you have anything to do with those stateโ€“owned companies in Hachester suddenly teaming up with the hotel?โ€ I asked.

Ryan played dumb. He said, โ€œI have no idea what youโ€™re talking about.โ€

I said, โ€œIf you donโ€™t tell me the truth right now, Iโ€™ll not only fire you, but weโ€™re done being friends.โ€

Ryanโ€™s eyes flickered, and he lowered his head. He said, โ€œYeah, I called in a few favors. Victoria, I couldnโ€™t stand people looking down on you.

โ€œIโ€™ve overheard them badโ€“mouthing youโ€“saying you only got the job because youโ€™re Jaredโ€™s wife, that the hotel will crash within a year. So I made sure they signed a threeโ€“year contract.โ€

I was honestly stunned. I never imagined Ryan would go this far to help me.
