Listen to this chapter:

โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you tell me about this sooner?โ€ I asked, most of my anger fading away. Honestly, those deals with the state-owned companies did make my position a lot more secure.

Ryan said, โ€œI just wanted to help you out quietly, so you wouldnโ€™t feel like you owed me anything.โ€

โ€œHonestly, I do owe you a big favor,โ€ I said, just calling it like it isโ€”not looking to take advantage of him.

Ryan said, โ€œYou really donโ€™t have to pay me back. Just take it as a gift from me.โ€

โ€œNo, a favorโ€™s a favorโ€”Iโ€™ll pay it back,โ€ I replied, already running the calculations in my head.

My heart was long past getting tangled up in feelingsโ€”when it comes to business, it was all about strategy and leverage. Ryan had serious connections, and cutting him off would only end up hurting me, too.

โ€œVictoria, if you want to pay me back, just let me keep working. Thereโ€™s only a month leftโ€”let me stay until the end of the month,โ€ Ryan said, putting his condition on the table.

โ€œWell, an heir like you willing to roll up his sleeves? Now thatโ€™s a rare sight,โ€ I teased, raising an eyebrow with a smile.

Ryan held my gaze and said, โ€œHow do you know the bitter part isnโ€™t what makes it sweet for me? Victoria, donโ€™t worryโ€”Iโ€™m not plotting anything. I just want a little more time with you.โ€

I replied, โ€œPlenty of people are into meโ€”youโ€™re just one more. But remember, liking is only a feeling. If you expect me to return it, you may be disappointed.โ€

My defenses had already hardened; I didnโ€™t fall easily, and when I did, I braced for the pain. Honestly, the safest move was to keep things light and playful.

Ryan let out a bitter laugh and said, โ€œI get it, Victoria. You just walked out of a messy marriageโ€”no way youโ€™re gonna let anyone in easily for a while.โ€

โ€œLooks like youโ€™re pretty mature for your age,โ€ I said with a laugh.

Ryan said, โ€œI grew up with my grandpa. My mom was always busy working, so I had to grow up fast and learn to take care of myself.โ€

โ€œAlright, letโ€™s go grab some midnight snacks,โ€ I suggested.

โ€œSounds good,โ€ Ryan said, his eyes lighting up with a happy smile.

I grabbed my keys and led Ryan downstairs. The area was packed with places to eat. I took him to a Shariport-style cafรฉ and ordered a few dishes.

Ryan looked all hyped up, sneaking peeks at me like he was scared Iโ€™d still be pissed.

Chapter 257

โ€œDid you take time off just to come to Shariport and have some fun?โ€ I asked him.

Ryan nodded and said, โ€œYeah, just here to hang out with some friends for a few days. By the way, are you still around tomorrow? I could let you meet my friends.โ€

โ€œNah, your friends are all too young for me,โ€ I said, shaking my head.

Ryan looked a little bummed but then added, โ€œThat girl in the pink dress today is my childhood friend. Sheโ€™s from Braylin, too. Donโ€™t get the wrong ideaโ€”weโ€™re just friends.โ€

I replied, โ€œRelax, I know nothing is going on.โ€

Ryan let out a soft โ€œoh,โ€ then asked, โ€œSo, in your eyes, do I look like a little brother to you?โ€

I nodded and said, โ€œYeah, Iโ€™ve got a younger brother your age. Heโ€™s studying in Braylin.โ€

Ryanโ€™s face lit up. He exclaimed, โ€œReally? Maybe you could introduce me to him sometime?โ€

I replied, โ€œNo need. Heโ€™s not from your world.โ€ I could tell Ryan wasnโ€™t just any rich kidโ€”he had the kind of innocence and clarity that only comes from being raised among the elite, completely shielded from the chaos beyond their gates.

Ryan asked, โ€œAre you still mad at me?โ€

With those rosy lips and perfect white teeth, he looked like a rare wildflower in full bloom on a mountain ridge. I leaned back in my seat, soaking up the view and savoring the moment.

A month on site had stolen the last of his office pallor; his lips were a soft, damp pink, and the sun had traded that fragile whiteness for a healthy glow.

Ryan caught me looking and blushed. He asked, โ€œVictoria, have you stared enough?โ€
