โMr. Holcomb, did you need something?โ I asked, putting on my best professional face and smiling.
Jared sighed, pulled up a chair, and sat down next to me. โDid you have a good time on your vacation?โ
โSpending my exโhusbandโs money and living in the house he bought me? Yeah, it was pretty great,โ I said, just to get under his skin.
Jaredโs face stayed calm, but his eyes lingered on me, deep and unreadable. โIโm glad youโre happy.โ
โYou look like youโve got a lot on your mind lately. Whatโs up? Canโt make a decision? Want me to break it down for you?โ I joked, trying to mess with him a little.
โHelp with what?โ Jaredโs eyes lit up, curious.
โYou know, between Amy and Tracy, which oneโs more wifey material for you?โ I said, grinning.
โVictoria, donโt be so childish.โ Jaredโs face darkened. โWhat kind of rumors have you been listening to?โ
I shrugged, playing it cool. โI donโt have time for gossip.โ
Jared frowned. โI promised Yvonne I wouldnโt get married again, so you really donโt have to worry.โ
With that, Jared stood up. โYvonneโs been growing up so fast lately. She even asked to sign up for some classes herself. If you have time, maybe you could hang out with her.โ
I froze for a second, caught off guard. Jared looked me over again, a teasing glint in his eyes. โYouโre looking more radiant than ever. Guess Iโve been a terrible gardener all these years, huh?โ
I hadnโt expected Jared to be in the mood for jokes. Keeping my cool, I shot back, โYou plucked me and stuck me in a vase, barely gave me any water. Of course, Iโm not blooming.โ
โYour sass gameโs gotten strong. When did you get so mouthy?โ Jared grumbled, clearly not thrilled.
โIโve been a doormat long enough. Itโs about time I started being myself again,โ I said with a smile.
โJust focus on your work. The hotelโs your responsibility now,โ Jared said as he opened the door to leave.
He didnโt even mention anything about me and Ryan, like he trusted me, certain I wasnโt the type to get involved in any drama.
That was just Jared, always playing the mastermind, acting like heโs got the whole game mapped out, seeing through everything but never giving anything away.
He thought he had got me all figured out, but I was not his caged bird or his kite on a string anymore. If he was hoping to keep me on a leash or watch me from the shadows, he could forget it.
Chapter 265
โMs. Murphy, are you free for lunch?โ Amy walked over, smiling at me.
I looked into Amyโs eyes, which screamed ambition, and asked, โIs this about work?โ
โWhy do you always look so standoffish? Weโre colleagues now. Canโt we be friends, too?โ Amy said, sounding sincere.
I nodded. โSure, we can grab lunch.โ
Amy booked a restaurant. When we got there and she finished ordering, she said, โMs. Murphy, I actually divorced Clint two years ago.โ
I asked, โReally? Then how come you two still seem like a couple?โ
โOh, weโre not, really. Weโre just like old friends who hang out sometimes, nothing more,โ Amy said with a shrug. โWe got divorced because I didnโt want kids, but Clint did. So, we ended things amicably.โ
I nodded. โThatโs pretty progressive. Honestly, that kind of arrangement sounds pretty healthy.โ
Amy leaned in, resting her chin on her hand, and sighed as she looked me over. โMs. Murphy, someone as gorgeous as you must have guys lining up to ask you out.โ
I smiled. โHonestly, not that many.โ
Amy grinned. โThatโs because most men feel out of their league around you. If a guy doesnโt have real confidence or status, he wouldnโt dare to just ask you out.
โBesides, Mr. Holcomb spoiled you. Now youโve got that highโclass vibe that makes you even more irresistible.โ
