Hearing Amyโs words, I smiled. Maybe she was right. Jared had always been generous with me.
โIs there something youโre trying to get at, Ms. Wilder?โ I changed the subject; I hated it when people tried to talk about me and Jared.
Amyโs eyes twinkled as she poured me half a cup of coffee. She smiled and said, โYouโre Mr. Holcombโs ex-wife, so you must know what he likes, right?โ
My face went a little stiff. โSo, you want me to spill what he likes?โ
โMs. Murphy, if I end up with Mr. Holcomb, things will be a lot better for you. But if Tracy marries him, you, as his ex-wife, are in for a rough time.โ Amy didnโt beat around the bush as she laid it all out.
I had to admit, Amy had all the tricks up her sleeve. She knew how to play on peopleโs weaknesses, which was why she could be so upfront with me.
โSo, Ms. Wilder, how sure are you that youโll actually win him over? And seriously, does Jared even like you?โ I asked.
Iโd never set foot in the corporate world before, and I was shocked to see these boss ladies hustling just like the guys, fighting for what they want, no matter how hard it is, never backing down.
โDoes liking even matter?โ Amy tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, her tone cool as ever. โItโs not about liking. Itโs about being a good fit. If you vibe together, help each other out, thatโs the real secret to making it last. Take you and Mr. Holcomb, for example. He liked you, even married you, but so what? You two still went your separate ways. How long did that even last?โ
I was blown away. Seeing the confidence shining on Amyโs face, I honestly felt kind of embarrassed. It was true. My mindset decided how far I could go.
โYou think I want to be with Mr. Holcomb forever? Nope. Even if he wants something long-term, I donโt. I just like how he is right now, smart and decisive. With his advice and help, I can level up at work. What I want is his support in business. Love and sex? Just seasoning for daily life. Whether theyโre there or not, itโs no big deal.โ Amy shrugged, looking totally chill.
It hit me. I shook my head with a smile and took a sip of coffee. โHonestly, chatting with people as ambitious as you is eye-opening.โ
โMs. Murphy, Iโm just looking out for you. We can be friends now, and in the future, I can help you out professionally,โ Amy said, trying to win me over with promises about what she could do for me down the line.
I arched my brows and said, โMs. Wilder, sorry, but Jared and I are divorced. I donโt want to concern myself with anything about him anymore.โ
โMs. Murphy, youโre still not hung up on Mr. Holcomb, are you? Afraid heโll end up with someone else?โ Amy shot me a look, her tone teasing. โOr are you just waiting for the perfect chance to get back with him?โ
To be honest, I didnโt like people getting nosy about my private life, even if they said it was for my own good; it still rubbed me the wrong way.
โMs. Wilder, youโre way better at going after men than Iโll ever be. Iโm not the one to give you advice on that,โ I replied, meeting her gaze.
โTracyโs been pretty active lately, getting chummy with Sally. Arenโt you worried she might end up as Mrs. Holcomb?โ Amy was trying to push my buttons with the truth.
Of course, I was worried. Tracy spent half my previous life making things miserable for me, and if she became โMrs. Holcombโ, I could kiss my peace goodbye.
โSure, Iโm worried, but that doesnโt mean Iโm gonna help you,โ I said, keeping my cool. I wasn't about to let anyone play me that easily. As for Tracy, I had my own ways to handle her.
In my previous life, Tracy used Yvonne to make my life hell. I could play that game, too. I would use Yvonne and make sure Tracy didnโt stand a chance. I would make sure Tracy paid for what she did.
