Listen to this chapter:

I looked at the womanโ€™s fierce expression, just as strong as any manโ€™s. Then I glanced at Ryan and saw the same fierce energy in his brow.

โ€œThis is my grandfather,โ€ Ryan said, showing me a photo of an older man in a suit.

Looking at the whole family, none of them seemed easy to deal with. My heart sank, and I suddenly felt like I shouldnโ€™t get too close to Ryan.

โ€œYour family doesnโ€™t look like ordinary people,โ€ I said with a smile.

Ryan nodded. โ€œYeah, theyโ€™re all pretty powerful.โ€

โ€œWhat about you?โ€ I asked.

Ryan raised his brows a bit. โ€œIโ€™m just average.โ€

I laughed. โ€œDonโ€™t be modest. With a family like yours, you might have met a lot of people. I donโ€™t get why you like me.โ€

Ryan paused, flipping through the album. โ€œI donโ€™t know. At first, I just wanted to get to know you. Then I told you I was in debt, and you wanted to help me pay it off. You also protected me. That felt gentle.โ€

My eyes stiffened. He was a kid starved for love. Small kindnesses hit him deep. โ€œRyan, have you thought maybe this isnโ€™t love, but just missing affection?โ€ I sighed.

โ€œIโ€™m not missing love,โ€ Ryan said clearly. โ€œMy grandpa and mom both love me a lot. I just like the gentle vibe you give off.โ€

I took the album from him and flipped through it myself. One photo stuck with me, a picture of Ryan around thirteen or fourteen, wearing a suit.

His short hair was slicked back, and his brows showed a sharp, decisive look. He seemed mature beyond his years. I stared at that handsome face. It was hard to imagine what kind of cunning thoughts hid behind it.

I became even more convinced Ryan was impossible to figure out. Maybe his sweet and obedient side was just a mask to please me.

I couldnโ€™t believe such drama was happening. I couldnโ€™t understand Jared, and now Ryan was even more secretive. I didnโ€™t want to deal with it anymore. I decided to give up.

At dinner, it was just Ryan and me eating. Silas didnโ€™t join us; he ate in the kitchen. My heart skipped a beat. Ryanโ€™s family seemed to have strict rules and clear social ranks.

โ€œThanks for coming to dinner with me,โ€ Ryan said quietly.

โ€œYou came to lunch at my place, so Iโ€™m just returning the favor,โ€ I said with a smile.

Ryan nodded. โ€œI like returning favors. Victoria, have you thought about moving to Braylin someday?โ€

I answered right away, โ€œNo, I havenโ€™t. Iโ€™m probably going to Shaville. That city appeals to me more.โ€

Ryan smiled. โ€œThatโ€™s good. Shavilleโ€™s great too, lots of business opportunities.โ€

โ€œAre you planning to stay in Braylin after you graduate?โ€ I asked, thinking he should stay.

โ€œWeโ€™ll see,โ€ Ryan said, a bit worried.

After dinner, we took a walk around the neighborhood to help digest. Ryan looked up at the sky. The moonlight was beautiful. โ€œVictoria.โ€ I was walking ahead, lost in thought, when I suddenly heard Ryan call my name.

I turned around and saw he was several feet behind me. Ryan came up beside me, sounding annoyed. โ€œWhat were you daydreaming about? You left me behind and didnโ€™t even notice.โ€

I smiled, โ€œI was thinking about work. If youโ€™re behind, why didnโ€™t you catch up yourself?โ€

Ryan asked with jealousy, โ€œWere you thinking about work or men?โ€

โ€œDo I even need to think about men?โ€ I laughed. โ€œTheyโ€™re everywhere.โ€

Ryan laughed in frustration. โ€œThen focus on work first. Leave men alone, okay?โ€

โ€œYou want me to wait for you?โ€ I asked him straight up.

โ€œWould you wait for me?โ€ Ryan asked.

โ€œNo,โ€ I said plainly.

Ryan sighed. โ€œNow you know why I like you?โ€

I was speechless. Ryan said, โ€œWhen I ask another girl if she is free, she always says yes. But when I asked you to wait, you said no.โ€

I froze and then teased, โ€œSounds like you like being tortured.โ€

Ryan explained, โ€œYou probably donโ€™t know, but deep down, men have a submissive streak. I like being controlled. Even though itโ€™s rough, I secretly enjoy it.โ€

I said, โ€œOh, I see. So whatโ€™s the difference between that and being a pushover?โ€

Ryan laughed out loud. โ€œOkay, itโ€™s being a pushover.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s your kind of manโ€™s drive to win. It has nothing to do with love or liking. Ryan, donโ€™t get it twisted. You donโ€™t like me. You just like conquering.โ€ I said it directly to snap him out of it.

Ryan blinked. When he saw me start to walk away, he hurried to catch up. โ€œHow about this? You keep teasing me so I can never conquer you, and Iโ€™ll stay a pushover forever.โ€
