Listen to this chapter:

I was taken aback that Ryan was delving into my personal life. Even though I knew he liked me, I didnโ€™t appreciate him asking so straight-up about my relationships. I pushed him away and said flatly, โ€œThatโ€™s between me and him. Donโ€™t ask.โ€

โ€œVictoria, do you think I donโ€™t deserve to be your man?โ€ Ryan suddenly got emotional and spoke with intensity.

I turned to him with a small smile. โ€œYouโ€™re just like a little brother to me. Thereโ€™s no way anything inappropriate could happen. Ryan, I hope you understand.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t.โ€ Ryan leaned against the window, frustration in his eyes. โ€œI saw you and him cooking together today. It made me feel weird, like the next thing Iโ€™d hear would be a wedding invite or news of your babyโ€™s one-month party.โ€

I froze for a second and then laughed at him. โ€œYouโ€™ve got quite the imagination,โ€ I said, rolling my eyes.

โ€œIf it was just my imagination, fine. But Iโ€™m scared itโ€™s real.โ€ Ryanโ€™s eyes were red as he looked at me with a sad expression. โ€œYou just got divorced. Youโ€™re not thinking about getting married again, are you?โ€

I shook my head. โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Iโ€™m not that reckless. And you should focus on your studies. Stop worrying so much.โ€

Ryan looked at me, then lowered his head and said, โ€œI tried getting close to you by pretending to be just a harmless little brother. I thought youโ€™d be less guarded with me, and thatโ€™d help us get to know each other better.โ€

Hearing that, my expression shifted a bit. โ€œI can tell youโ€™ve been trying hard. But no matter how real a lie feels, itโ€™s still a lie.โ€

โ€œSorry.โ€ Ryan looked back up at me. โ€œI know I was wrong, I wonโ€™t lie to you again.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s fine.โ€ I forgave him easily. โ€œYou cared enough to try, and that counts.โ€ As I said that, some memories popped into my head and I couldnโ€™t help but smile.

Ryan was quiet for a moment and then laughed bitterly. โ€œI lied because I was scared.โ€

โ€œScared of what?โ€ I asked, curious since we hadnโ€™t known each other long.

โ€œScared youโ€™d shut me down right away.โ€ Ryanโ€™s eyes got intense. โ€œScared youโ€™d think Iโ€™m too young and irresponsible and not see me as a man.โ€

โ€œYou are young. Honestly, I have a mental block about younger guys. They always seem to be missing something.โ€ I was being honest.

Ryan looked hurt and annoyed. โ€œI canโ€™t choose where I was born, but I can choose who I like.โ€

โ€œAlright, Ryan, enough.โ€ I cut him off. โ€œIโ€™m not in the mood for romance. Iโ€™m glad you like me, but letโ€™s be friends.โ€

Ryan shook his head suddenly. โ€œNo way. Iโ€™m leaving Hachester soon. I donโ€™t know when weโ€™ll meet again.โ€

I laughed. โ€œItโ€™s not the old days with slow horses and carriages. We can just text if somethingโ€™s up.โ€

โ€œSome things have more meaning when said face to face.โ€ Ryan sounded serious.

Right then, Silasโ€™s voice called from nearby. โ€œMr. Jennings, the cakeโ€™s ready. You and Ms. Murphy may come eat.โ€

I turned and headed to the living room. Ryan followed. The smell of fresh bread filled the air in the dining room. โ€œMs. Murphy, this is Mr. Jenningsโ€™s favorite. Try some,โ€ Silas said with a smile.

I took a piece, bit into it, and nodded. โ€œItโ€™s creamy. Good.โ€

Ryanโ€™s face flushed a bit, probably hearing my compliment. He grabbed a piece and started eating too. Whatever wasnโ€™t said earlier seemed to vanish.

After a few bites, Ryan suddenly brought over a photo album and said, โ€œI want to show you my family.โ€

I walked over with curiosity. Ryan flipped to a family portrait. โ€œThis was taken when my dad was still alive. Thatโ€™s him, and thatโ€™s my grandpa. Over thereโ€ฆ those are all my enemies now.โ€

His face stiffened as he pointed to another group in the photo. My heart clenched. Ryan looked up at me with sadness in his eyes. โ€œYou probably never expected it, but my family and I are enemies.โ€

Looking at this handsome guy in front of me, I couldnโ€™t imagine the kind of life he grew up in. He kept his secrets tight. Otherwise, there was no way he could have held his ground in the family.

Ryan pulled out another photoโ€“a woman in a suit skirt set, sitting confidently on a couch with her hands resting on the arms. โ€œThatโ€™s my mom,โ€ he said.
