Chapter 369

Jared looked a bit speechless. This wasnโ€™t something you could fix with just patienceโ€”it took way more than that.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry about work in Shaville, just focus on your job,โ€ Jared said, still trying to comfort me. โ€œIโ€™ll take care of Yvonne. If it really gets too much, Iโ€™ll get her a professional tutor. She said sheโ€™ll put in the effort and study hard.โ€

โ€œOkay, I trust you,โ€ I replied, my voice calm.

After we finished talking about Yvonne, there was a moment of silence between us.

Jared didnโ€™t hang up right away. Instead, he asked, โ€œHowโ€™s it going with Nathan lately? He seems pretty busy.โ€

โ€œJared, donโ€™t go snooping around and taking pictures of him anymore. Itโ€™s not exactly ethical,โ€ I said, deciding to remind him.

โ€œIโ€™m just worried about youโ€ฆโ€ he started.

โ€œIf I get cheated on, thatโ€™s on me. Maybe itโ€™s just something I have to go through. You donโ€™t need to interfere. People have to learn from their own mistakes, right?โ€ I knew he meant well, and I appreciated it, but having my ex-husband spy on my current boyfriend wasnโ€™t exactly a good long-term plan. I didnโ€™t want to end up in a mess with both of them.

After a long pause, Jared finally said, โ€œAlright.โ€

โ€œI gotta go. Iโ€™m still busy,โ€ I said, ready to end the call. There wasnโ€™t much else to say.

โ€œVictoriaโ€ฆโ€ Jared took a shaky breath. โ€œThe other night, I took Yvonne out, and she mistook another woman for you.โ€

My chest tightened for a moment, but I forced myself to sound calm. โ€œReally? I havenโ€™t been back to Hachester.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ Jared replied, his voice rough. โ€œI thought it was you too, but we realized it was someone else.โ€

โ€œOh, okay. Next time I head back to Hachester, Iโ€™ll let Yvonne know first,โ€ I said.

With that, I hung up. It seemed like the best way to avoid any more mix-ups between them.

Jaredโ€™s words left me feeling unsettled. Sometimes, itโ€™s not the long, emotional speeches that shake your soulโ€”itโ€™s the impact of a single sentence in a moment of surprise.

I knew Jared probably wanted to say he still couldnโ€™t let me go, but Iโ€™m done listening to that.

So what if he loves me? Could that ever make up for what he owed me in my previous life?

Could it help me forget all those painful memories?

โ€œMs. Murphy, someoneโ€™s here to see youโ€ฆโ€

A staff member hurried over, calling out to me.

I figured it was work related, so I set down my coffee, smoothed out my jacket, and headed out.

To my surprise, standing outside was a young girl sporting a Chanel mini backpack and rocking a bold t-shirt dress.

Her face stopped me in my tracksโ€”it was Nathanโ€™s half-sister.

โ€œHi, Iโ€™m Lily,โ€ she greeted me with easy confidence. โ€œAre you my brotherโ€™s friend?โ€

My heart did a little flip. โ€˜Wait, he told her Iโ€™m just a friend?โ€™

โ€œYeah, nice to meet you. Iโ€™m Victoria Murphy,โ€ I said, and shook her hand.

โ€œSorry for just showing up like this,โ€ she said, her Chinese surprisingly good.

โ€œIs there something I can help you with?โ€ I asked, feeling a bit uneasy about meeting Nathanโ€™s family this way. It wouldโ€™ve felt more natural if Nathan had brought her to see me himself.

Lily smiled, lips curving up. โ€œJust wanted to talk to you about something small. Are you free now? Thereโ€™s a cafรฉ across the streetโ€”itโ€™s not too crowded.โ€

I nodded. โ€œSure, Iโ€™ll treat you.โ€

โ€œThanks!โ€ Lily beamed, her smile bright and full of youth. At twenty, she was at such an enviable age.

Once we were inside the cafรฉ, I ordered a lemonade for myself and got her an iced Americano.

We sat down, and Lily propped her chin on her hand, studying me intently. Then she said, โ€œYouโ€™re not the woman my brotherโ€™s been secretly in love with for years, are you?โ€
