Chapter 406
โIf itโs an accident, Iโll forgive you,โ Ryan said, walking toward me, and for a moment, he had that same commanding vibe Edward always had.
โBut what ifโฆ what if I knew it was wrong and did it anyway?โ I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Ryan smirked. โGuess Iโll have to see how it is first.โ
My heart did a little flip. Ryan might look all sweet and harmless, but I could tell he had the potential to go dark if pushed. Kids from the Jennings family never grew up sheltered โ they learned early that nothing in their world was ever simple. And with his dad dying so young, I seriously doubt it was just illness; thereโs probably a whole web of secrets and schemes behind it. Ryan might play the innocent, but deep down, heโs got layers most people never see.
When we got back to the living room, everyone was giving us these knowing looks. One of the guys even glanced at his watch and teased, โSeriously, Ryan? You only lasted thirteen minutes?โ
โYeah, thatโs not like your usual performance,โ another guy chimed in.
Everyone burst out laughing. Ryan, being young and a bit thin-skinned, turned red and snapped, โCut it out, you guys!โ
I felt super awkward too.
Then it was time for the buffet โ tons of food, drinks, and a huge birthday cake. It was Ryanโs twenty-fourth birthday, his zodiac year.
One of the guys joked, โHey Ryan, since itโs your zodiac year, you should get Ms. Murphy to buy you some red underwear and red socks.โ
Ryan looked at me with a burning gaze. โSo, will you?โ
I froze for a second. With everyone watching, I didnโt want to embarrass him, so I nodded. โOf course, Iโll get them for you.โ
โWhy are you all making such a fuss? Ms. Murphyโs been married before โ sheโs probably done this for her ex already. Sheโs a pro at this stuff,โ Isabelle said, lazily propping up her chin.
Everyone shot Ryan a look, their expressions a bit awkward. Someone cut in right away, โIsabelle, donโt kill the vibe with that kind of talk.โ
Isabelle just shrugged. โWhat, canโt handle the truth? Ms. Murphy, did I say anything wrong?โ
Just as I was about to respond, Ryanโs voice went cold as he said to Isabelle, โDonโt bother showing up next year. I wonโt miss your so-called blessings.โ
Isabelleโs face went pale, and she instantly fell silent.
Someone quickly tried to smooth things over. โCome on, Ryan, sheโs just a kid, just messing around. Donโt take it to heart.โ
Ryan kept his face cold. โShe really needs someone to teach her how to act in public.โ
Tears welled up in Isabelleโs eyes, and the next second she spun around and bolted out, her girlfriends hurrying after her.
I just stood there, totally frozen. I never thought Ryan would actually call out his childhood friend Isabelle like that โ all because of me.
The whole vibe in the room just crashed. Everyone went quiet, and the awkwardness was thick enough to cut with a knife.
โCome on, letโs not worry about Isabelle. She needs to cool off and think about what she said. Letโs have some cake,โ someone said, trying to break the tension.
โYeah, sheโs not a little kid anymore. She really should know better than to say something like that right now,โ another person chimed in.
Ryan cut the first slice of cake and handed it to a staff member. โCould you take this upstairs to Uncle Ryan?โ
Then he put the second slice in front of me. โVic, you should have some.โ
I took it and whispered, โMaybe you should call Ms. Lynn back?โ
โItโs nothing. From now on, if anyone tries to call you out in front of me, theyโre disrespecting me too โ and I wonโt go easy on them,โ Ryan said casually, making sure everyone in the room got the message.
Everyone laughed and chimed in their agreement.
My heart felt warm โ Ryan really put me first. The way he stood up for me made my eyes a little misty.
โThanks,โ I said, deciding not to stick up for Isabelle anymore. Iโm done trying to defend her โ she was just stirring the pot on purpose.
Ryan let out a low chuckle. โDonโt forget to bring me my lucky birthday gift tomorrow.โ
