Listen to this chapter:

I was still surprisedโ€”Ryan was really testing how much Edward could take.

Edward had no clue about any of this yet. If he saw Ryan flaunting our hand-holding pic on Instagram, everything weโ€™d agreed on would go up in smoke.

I pressed my hand to my aching forehead. Things had been out of control for a while now, like a car with no brakes.

โ€œRyan!โ€ I called out, running over to the couch where he was sitting.

Ryan was editing a photo on his phone. He looked up at me and asked gently, โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€

โ€œUncle Ryan seems to know about my situation. He promised heโ€™d help me deal with Nathan and the Chancellor family. But if you post that picture on Instagram now, he probably wonโ€™t help me anymore. He said he could fix everything with just one phone call. What about you?โ€ I wasnโ€™t letting love cloud my judgmentโ€“real-life benefits still mattered to me.

Ryan gave my arm a gentle pat and said reassuringly, โ€œRelax. Iโ€™ll have Uncle Ryan make that call. For him, itโ€™s just a word and everythingโ€™s settled.โ€

โ€œYouโ€ฆ youโ€™re really going to ask your uncle for this favor?โ€ My mind just blanked out, and I could feel my face twisting in disbelief.

Ryan nodded. โ€œWhat, you think I canโ€™t pull this off?โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s justโ€ฆ what if your uncle thinks Iโ€™m a bad woman?โ€ I asked nervously.

โ€œHow are you bad? If you were really bad, weโ€™d be doing a lot more than just holding hands,โ€ Ryan said, actually pretty good at comforting people.

I couldnโ€™t even explain myself to him anymore. I turned and headed back to the kitchen, my mind a mess.

โ€˜Should I tell Edward that Ryanโ€™s known about all of this from the beginning?โ€™ I hesitated.

Ryan seemed to have finished posting on Instagram. He strolled over to the kitchen, leaned against the counter with a puppy-dog look, and asked, โ€œDid you forget to get me my lucky year gift?โ€

I shot back, โ€œOf course I didnโ€™t forget. Iโ€™ll buy it for you this afternoon.โ€

โ€œOkay, but what do you want?โ€ Ryan suddenly asked. โ€œYouโ€™re giving me a present, so I should get you something too, right?โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to get me anything. Itโ€™s just a birthday gift for you,โ€ I said.

โ€œNo way, Iโ€™ll pick something myself,โ€ Ryan replied with a mysterious grin.

โ€œIs that your phone ringing?โ€ I asked, catching the sound with my sharp ears.

Ryan shook his head. โ€œNo, thatโ€™s your phone.โ€

A chill crept down my backโ€”I had a bad feeling about this. I quickly shoved the spatula into Ryanโ€™s hand. โ€œHere, you stir.โ€

โ€œWaitโ€ฆ I donโ€™t know how,โ€ Ryan said, sounding nervous.

โ€œJust move them around a bit so the dumplings donโ€™t stick,โ€ I said quickly, then dashed into the bedroom.

When I saw the caller ID, it popped up as โ€œFoxโ€œโ€”the nickname Iโ€™d given Edward.

Iโ€™d saved his contact as that when I was pissed at him.

I gripped my phone, took a deep breath, and tried to sound calm. โ€œMr. Jennings!โ€

โ€œDid Ryan just post a picture of you two holding hands on Instagram?โ€ Edward demanded, his voice full of anger.

I couldnโ€™t lie. I admitted, โ€œYes, Mr. Jennings. He knows everything. He even guessed that youโ€™d force me into a fake marriage.โ€

Edward was silent for a few seconds, then let out a helpless sigh. โ€œAlright. Ryanโ€™s always been a deep thinkerโ€“he probably did figure it out. Looks like he really likes you. Because of you, heโ€™s even trying to outsmart me now.โ€

โ€œSo what about our agreementโ€ฆโ€ I asked.

โ€œItโ€™s off,โ€ Edward replied coldly. โ€œYou didnโ€™t hold up your end, and you still want the perks?โ€

I knew this was coming.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Mr. Jennings. I didnโ€™t expect things to turn out like this,โ€ I said, pretending to be remorseful.

โ€œDid he take that clip from you?โ€ Edward asked, completely ignoring my apology.

I nodded. โ€œYeah, he handed it to me this morning and told me everything.โ€

Edwardโ€™s voice suddenly went cold. โ€œYou twoโ€ฆ youโ€™re not already together, are you?โ€

I felt my heart skip a beat. โ€œNot yet,โ€ I replied.

โ€œDonโ€™t even dream about pulling some low-life stunt like getting knocked up with a Jennings baby just to cash in. If you think having our kid will set you up for life, youโ€™re delusional. You might never lay eyes on that child for the rest of your days,โ€ Edward said, his voice suddenly icy and chilling.

My heart clenched. This wasnโ€™t some empty threatโ€“this was the brutal reality staring me in the face.

I felt looked down on, so I lifted my chin and said, โ€œMr. Jennings, trust me, Iโ€™m not dying to have kids. Iโ€™ve been through childbirth once, and I know exactly how much it hurts. Iโ€™m not the type to forget the pain and rush into it again, so you can chill.โ€

Edward hung up on me, just like that.

I stared at my phone, half thinking it had glitched out.

Turns out, my phone was fineโ€“it was just Edward showing his true colors.
