Listen to this chapter:

Nathan replied with a simple โ€œOkay.โ€ I was about to use work as an excuse to end the call, my finger hovering over the hang-up button, when he hesitated.

Finally, Nathan spoke softly, his voice gentle, โ€œVictoria, once Iโ€™m done here, Iโ€™ll come to Shaville to see you.โ€

My heart sank. After everything Nathan had been through, I really thought he should put all his energy into his career.

Not everyoneโ€™s business can stay strong after a crisisโ€“most people never fully recover.

The last time I saw Nathan, heโ€™d lost weight, looking so worn out from all the pressure that it was hard to imagine.

โ€œLetโ€™s talk about it when things settle down at your company,โ€ I said, not wanting to shut him down right away. Right now, he needs to keep his emotions steady to get through this.

โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll reach out again. You might need to make a trip back to Hachester when you get a chance,โ€ Nathan said gently.

โ€œYeah, Iโ€™ll go back,โ€ I replied, then hung up.

I mapped out what to do with my moneyโ€“some would go into gold, some into stocks, and some into buying property.

After crunching the numbers, I realized I could put up to 700 million into Nathanโ€™s company, but that was really pushing my limit.

I wasnโ€™t about to put all my eggs in one basket or risk getting myself into financial trouble. This way, Iโ€™d be playing it safe.

Ryan seemed to be getting more rebellious by the day. He was throwing a dinner tonight, and heโ€™d invited both me and Edward.

I didnโ€™t know about it until I showed up and saw Edward sitting in the private roomโ€“it startled me.

Edward glanced up at me, his face blank as he looked back down at his phone.

Ryan had stepped out to make a call, and when he came back and saw me, a smile lit up his eyes.

I grabbed his arm and dragged him outside. Ryan shot me a pitiful, aggrieved look.

Lowering my voice, I asked, โ€œWhat are you up to?โ€

Ryan replied, โ€œI just want to talk things out face-to-face, so Uncle Edward doesnโ€™t end up locking you up again.โ€

โ€œYou know about that?โ€ I blinked in surprise.

Ryan nodded. โ€œYeah, I talked to Uncle Edward today. He said heโ€™d apologize to you in a bit.โ€

My eyes widened. Edward was actually going to apologize to me? I really didnโ€™t expect thatโ€“I donโ€™t think I deserve it.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Vic. I havenโ€™t always been the most attentive. I didnโ€™t realize what you were dealing with, but now that I know, I promise Iโ€™ll make sure this gets resolved for you,โ€ Ryan said, sounding genuinely guilty.

I smiled at him. โ€œIโ€™m not mad. Your uncle was just trying to protect me. From where heโ€™s coming from, I get it.โ€

โ€œEither way, keeping you locked up in his villa overnight just wasnโ€™t okay,โ€ Ryan said, his voice low.

My eyes flickered. Ryan was actually standing up for meโ€“he really was taking responsibility.

โ€œOkay, sure,โ€ I said, then followed him back into the private room.

Edward had always given off this distant, icy vibe that made me uneasy just seeing him.

But this time, when he saw Ryan and me walk in, his tone was softer than usual as he said, โ€œMs. Murphy, I was in the wrong before. I apologize.โ€

I gave a dry, awkward laugh. โ€œMr. Jennings, thereโ€™s really no need for that.โ€

Edward glanced at Ryan and asked, โ€œSo, you really want to be with her?โ€

Ryan nodded. โ€œI do, but sheโ€™s not ready for it yet. Iโ€™ll wait.โ€

I turned to look at Ryan. When it comes to relationships, heโ€™s not the kind of guy who pushes people.

Edwardโ€™s brow furrowed. โ€œYouโ€™ll have to talk to your grandfather yourself. Iโ€™m not going to speak for you.โ€

Ryanโ€™s face went stiff, and he muttered, โ€œUncle Edward, canโ€™t you say something nice for me? You know how Grandpa is.โ€
