Listen to this chapter:

โ€œIf you know that, then why are you still so determined to be with her?โ€ Edwardโ€™s voice grew a little sharper.

Ryan shot me a quick glance, saw how tense I was, and reached under the table to grip my cold fingers.

โ€œUncle Edward, everyone has to take a leap at least once in their life, right? Otherwise, weโ€™ll just end up with regrets,โ€ Ryan said, sounding bold and sure of himself.

Edward let out a faint laughโ€”it was so soft, I couldnโ€™t tell if he was mocking us or just exhausted.

A chill ran down my spine. My instincts screamed that both of these men were way out of my league.

But feelings were already a tangled mess. With the Jennings familyโ€™s help, weโ€™d managed to pull Nathanโ€™s company back from the brink. Jared and I were both ready to throw in a ton of money, and now that the crisis had passed, the market was bullish on Nathanโ€™s company. Everything seemed to be turning around.

If only we could set aside emotions and just talk business, life would be so much simpler.

But it was exactly because Ryan liked me that we ended up in this mess tonight.

It was like the cornerstone at the very bottomโ€”if things ever fell apart between Ryan and me, and that foundation was pulled out, the whole castle weโ€™d built together would be on the verge of collapse.

โ€œWhatโ€™s got you zoning out?โ€ Ryan handed me a cup of coffee with a grin.

Only then did I realize Iโ€™d been spacing out, so I quickly took a sip of the coffee.

Edward stood up. โ€œIโ€™m going to step out for a smoke.โ€

Once Edward left, Ryan laughed. โ€œUncle Edward really needs to find himself a girlfriend. Otherwise, making him third-wheel our romance is kind of mean.โ€

I replied offhand, โ€œIf you know any good women, why not set him up?โ€

โ€œRemember Isabelle Lynn? The one I yelled at and made cry last time? Sheโ€™s into Uncle Edward,โ€ Ryan said, bringing up someone out of the blue.

โ€œAh, right,โ€ I said, suddenly remembering. I quickly pulled a small, fancy box out of my pocket. โ€œHere, this is for you.โ€

Ryan glanced at it, then quickly shoved the box back into my bag. โ€œDonโ€™t take it out hereโ€”itโ€™s not a good idea for people to see.โ€

I smiled, biting my lip. โ€œWhat are you so worried about?โ€

Ryanโ€™s handsome face flushed a little, and he whispered, โ€œDid you get the right size? You didnโ€™t just guess, did you?โ€

โ€œHow would I know your size? I just played it safe and picked a large one,โ€ I said.

โ€œYou really donโ€™t know?โ€ Ryan's ears turned red, his voice dropping to a husky whisper. โ€œDidnโ€™t I already show you?โ€

I couldnโ€™t help but laughโ€”teasing a newbie like him was just too much fun.

โ€œSure, I saw it, but my hands arenโ€™t a measuring tape. How could I possibly know the size?โ€ I teased him, grinning.

Ryanโ€™s breath hitched a little, and he looked at me with that spoiled, amused smile. โ€œAlright, big or small, Iโ€™ll wear it anyway.โ€

โ€œReally? Not even going to be picky about it?โ€ I grinned at him.

Ryan just stared at me, speechless.

Just as I was about to bring the conversation back to Edward and Ms. Lynn, the door swung open out of nowhere.

In walked a fresh, elegant presenceโ€”it was Isabelle Lynn, the one weโ€™d just been talking about.

โ€œRyan, what are you doing here?โ€ Isabelle Lynn asked, her voice full of surprise.

Ryan just shrugged, unfazed. โ€œShouldnโ€™t I be asking you the same thing?โ€

โ€œI ran into Uncle Edward in the hallway. He said you were in here,โ€ Isabelle Lynn replied, and her gaze landed right on me.

Ryan seemed to remember how Isabelle Lynn had mocked me at his birthday party and said, โ€œGo have your dinner and stop disturbing the peace here.โ€

But Isabelle Lynn just walked right in, poured herself a cup of coffee, and turned to me. โ€œMs. Murphy, I was rude last time and hit a sore spot. Let me offer this coffee as an apology.โ€
