Chapter 454

I thought back to when we first met. He was drunk, hiding behind a pillar, puking his guts out, then with watery eyes, asking me for a tissue.

โ€œHonestly, I thought you were just some pretty boy star,โ€ I said.

Ryan: โ€œโ€ฆโ€

I continued, โ€œI even imagined you were one of those actors sent to entertain a rich woman, but you couldnโ€™t hold your liquor, so you snuck off and hid behind that pillar, crying your eyes out.โ€

Ryanโ€™s face went stiff.

I cracked up. โ€œGuess I totally got it wrong.โ€

โ€œSo, do you think Iโ€™m good-looking?โ€ Ryan asked. โ€œYou donโ€™t think I look tooโ€ฆ feminine, do you?โ€

I rested my chin in my hand, taking a good look at his face. โ€œNo way. Your looks are the kind that only get more attractive as you get olderโ€“just like Uncle Ryan. Thereโ€™s nothing soft about you, youโ€™ve got that bold, masculine vibe.โ€

Ryan suddenly blurted out, โ€œSo, you think Uncle Ryan is handsome?โ€

I was caught off guard and quickly shook my head. โ€œDonโ€™t get me wrong, I just meant your familyโ€™s got some seriously good genes.โ€

โ€œIf I looked more like my grandma, Iโ€™d be even better-looking,โ€ Ryan said, then added, โ€œShe was a real knockout.โ€

โ€œOh, that makes sense,โ€ I said.

Ryan noticed I wasnโ€™t digging for more and looked a bit put out. โ€œWhy arenโ€™t you asking about my family?โ€

I replied softly, โ€œYouโ€™ll talk about it when you feel like it. Iโ€™m not going to bug you.โ€

โ€œHow come youโ€™re not as gossipy as other women?โ€ Ryan muttered, still eating and sounding a little annoyed.

โ€œHonestly, gossiping takes effort, and Iโ€™d rather spend my time on myself,โ€ I said with a smile.

Ryan seemed to agree and smiled. โ€œYou know, you remind me a lot of my grandma. She always said to focus on yourself and not let outside stuff mess with you too much.โ€

โ€œReally? Then your grandma must have been a woman of real grace and refinement,โ€ I sighed softly.

โ€œYeah!โ€ Ryan nodded. โ€œMost families have mother-in-law and daughter-in-law drama, but not us. My mom always respected my grandma, and my grandma never got involved in their stuff.โ€

โ€œThat kind of mother-in-law is really hard to find,โ€ I said with a smile.

Ryanโ€™s brows drew together with a hint of sadness, โ€œMy grandpa had two wives. Uncle Ryan was born to the second wife. My grandma never said anything about it, but I know deep down it hurt her.โ€

I remembered Isabelle mentioning this in passing before, but I didnโ€™t expect Ryan to bring it up now.

โ€œSo, was that just how things were back then? Guys having two wives?โ€ I asked, thinking about those rich families in Shariport who did the same thing.

Ryan shook his head. โ€œIโ€™m not sure, but my grandma passed away before she even turned fifty. She mustโ€™ve had a tough time.โ€

โ€œIs your grandpaโ€™s second wife still alive?โ€ I asked.

โ€œYeah, sheโ€™s still around, but lately sheโ€™s gotten really into Buddhism and pretty much keeps to herself,โ€ Ryan said.

I was honestly still kind of stunned. Turns out, the whole rich guys with multiple wives thing really isnโ€™t anything new.

โ€œSoโ€ฆ Ryan, what do you think about having more than one wife?โ€ I asked.

Ryan looked at me, then quickly raised his left hand. โ€œI swear, thatโ€™s not something Iโ€™d ever want.โ€

Seeing how tense he was, I reached over and gently pushed his hand down. โ€œIโ€™m not worried youโ€™d do that. I just want to know if you think itโ€™s wrong or not.โ€

Ryanโ€™s face went a bit blank and he shook his head. โ€œIโ€™m not sure. My grandma was well-educated and graceful, beautiful inside and out. My other grandma was a painter, super talented. My grandpa treated them both well, but deep down, I bet they both wanted his love all to themselves. Love is selfish like thatโ€“nobody wants to share, not even a little.โ€

I stared at him, a little dazed. Ryan really hadnโ€™t gone astrayโ€“he was still so genuine and pure-hearted.

โ€œNot willing to share even a sliver?โ€ I echoed under my breath, unease creeping into my heart.

Was Ryan a total purist when it came to love?

If thatโ€™s really the case, how could I ever be worthy of someone so devoted?

I looked at this beautiful guy in front of me, completely torn. Iโ€™d already drifted off course, turning into someone who values gain over feelings. But what he wants isnโ€™t profitโ€“itโ€™s love. Could I really give him what he wants?

If I canโ€™t give him what he wants, how could I even have the nerve to get close to him?

Ryan noticed I was zoning out and shot me a curious look. โ€œWhat are you thinking about?โ€

My heart skipped a beat and I quickly shook my head. โ€œItโ€™s nothing. Ryan, if we end up together but never get married, would you still want to be with me?โ€
