Chapter 455
Every time the topic of love came up, Ryan would just fix his gaze on me, unwavering.
That look made me feel like a real heartbreaker.
But since I couldnโt give him the pure love he deserved, if I was going to be a heartbreaker, I should at least be upfront about it, so he wouldnโt feel played.
โWhy are you saying things like that again?โ Ryan seemed to see right through me, letting out a soft sigh. โYou know, ever since I met you, when you say โsee you tomorrow,โ it feels like a promise. When you say it, it actually makes me look forward to the next day.โ
The way he said itโthose few words, even more irresistible than a love confessionโreally got to me.
I lowered my eyes, guilt weighing on me, my voice sounding tired. โRyan, if weโre going to be together, letโs not get hung up on where this is going, okay? Chase whatever you want, just donโt go after some unrealistic, illusory love.โ
Ryan looked genuinely shocked, staring at me like he couldnโt believe what he was hearing. โBeing together isnโt about heading straight for marriageโitโs about chasing happiness. So marriage isnโt the real goal; happiness is.โ
I blinked, wondering to myself if we were even talking about the same thing.
I could only smile and give him a compliment. โPretty insightful for someone your age.โ
Ryan just gave me a look and took a bite of his food. โDonโt talk to me like youโre some wise old elder. Seriously, look at yourself, youโre not even that old.โ
I instantly felt awkward. Guess I got a little too cocky and totally forgot to keep my cool.
โSo, what do you think we should really be after?โ I asked, trying to sound serious.
Ryan took his time with his food and said, โI donโt know, and honestly, I donโt even want to know.โ
โRyanโฆโ I pretended to be mad.
He looked at me, all innocent. โWhy do we have to want something out of this? Just sitting here with you, eating and talking, thatโs enough to make me happy.โ
โSo, is it companionship youโre after?โ I asked.
โThat works for me,โ Ryan said with a soft smile. โBut will you stay by my side?โ
โUncle Ryan said youโre about to head back to Braylin. Weโll be living in different citiesโhow are we supposed to stay together?โ I asked, still smiling.
Ryanโs face clouded over. โThen Iโll just apply for a job here in Shaville. That way, we wonโt have to be apart.โ
โDonโt be impulsive,โ I said, stopping him. โRyan, I know you already have a clear path ahead of you.โ
Ryanโs gaze slowly cleared, and he nodded. โYeah, I promised Uncle Ryan. Heโs not stopping us, but I canโt just do whatever I want.โ
โYouโre giving up a whole forest for just one tree. Is that really worth it?โ I hadnโt expected Ryan to actually make a deal with Edward. Guess young people really are impulsive.
โThen donโt let me regret it, okay?โ Ryan said with a smile, his eyes shining bright.
I felt a little embarrassed under his gaze and looked out the window.
I always thought Ryan was at some science and tech school, but he totally fooled meโheโs actually a star student at Eastbridge University, majoring in economics.
After we finished eating, I started clearing the table. Ryan wanted to help, but he ended up just standing there, watching me.
โI canโt let you stay the night,โ I said, glancing over at him as I finished tying up the trash.
โI know, Iโm not staying over,โ Ryan nodded.
I checked the time. โItโs almost nine-thirty. You should head back.โ
โLโฆ I donโt want to go back yet,โ Ryan said, his handsome face flushing with embarrassment.
Of course I knew what he wanted, but I just couldnโt let things go any further between us.
โHeโs still in college, he has no idea what it would really mean if things went that far,โ I thought to myself.
โVic, Iโฆโ Ryan said, and after I washed my hands, he suddenly pulled me into a hug from behind.
My breath hitched, my chest heaving as my heart pounded.
โRyanโฆโ I murmured.
โEver since last time, I just canโt get it out of my head,โ Ryanโs voice was low and rough. โI know youโre not ready to go all the way with me, and I wonโt push you, butโฆ could you give me a hand again, like you did before?โ
Ryan was young and full of hormonesโafter that first time, he just couldnโt get enough.
Before I could even react, my mind went completely blankโhis lips were already at the back of my neck, igniting a fire that made it impossible to think straight.
โVic, please,โ he whispered, his voice hoarse and needy, nuzzling against my skin with a desperate tenderness.
