Chapter 455

Every time the topic of love came up, Ryan would just fix his gaze on me, unwavering.

That look made me feel like a real heartbreaker.

But since I couldnโ€™t give him the pure love he deserved, if I was going to be a heartbreaker, I should at least be upfront about it, so he wouldnโ€™t feel played.

โ€œWhy are you saying things like that again?โ€ Ryan seemed to see right through me, letting out a soft sigh. โ€œYou know, ever since I met you, when you say โ€˜see you tomorrow,โ€™ it feels like a promise. When you say it, it actually makes me look forward to the next day.โ€

The way he said itโ€“those few words, even more irresistible than a love confessionโ€“really got to me.

I lowered my eyes, guilt weighing on me, my voice sounding tired. โ€œRyan, if weโ€™re going to be together, letโ€™s not get hung up on where this is going, okay? Chase whatever you want, just donโ€™t go after some unrealistic, illusory love.โ€

Ryan looked genuinely shocked, staring at me like he couldnโ€™t believe what he was hearing. โ€œBeing together isnโ€™t about heading straight for marriageโ€“itโ€™s about chasing happiness. So marriage isnโ€™t the real goal; happiness is.โ€

I blinked, wondering to myself if we were even talking about the same thing.

I could only smile and give him a compliment. โ€œPretty insightful for someone your age.โ€

Ryan just gave me a look and took a bite of his food. โ€œDonโ€™t talk to me like youโ€™re some wise old elder. Seriously, look at yourself, youโ€™re not even that old.โ€

I instantly felt awkward. Guess I got a little too cocky and totally forgot to keep my cool.

โ€œSo, what do you think we should really be after?โ€ I asked, trying to sound serious.

Ryan took his time with his food and said, โ€œI donโ€™t know, and honestly, I donโ€™t even want to know.โ€

โ€œRyanโ€ฆโ€ I pretended to be mad.

He looked at me, all innocent. โ€œWhy do we have to want something out of this? Just sitting here with you, eating and talking, thatโ€™s enough to make me happy.โ€

โ€œSo, is it companionship youโ€™re after?โ€ I asked.

โ€œThat works for me,โ€ Ryan said with a soft smile. โ€œBut will you stay by my side?โ€

โ€œUncle Ryan said youโ€™re about to head back to Braylin. Weโ€™ll be living in different citiesโ€“how are we supposed to stay together?โ€ I asked, still smiling.

Ryanโ€™s face clouded over. โ€œThen Iโ€™ll just apply for a job here in Shaville. That way, we wonโ€™t have to be apart.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be impulsive,โ€ I said, stopping him. โ€œRyan, I know you already have a clear path ahead of you.โ€

Ryanโ€™s gaze slowly cleared, and he nodded. โ€œYeah, I promised Uncle Ryan. Heโ€™s not stopping us, but I canโ€™t just do whatever I want.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re giving up a whole forest for just one tree. Is that really worth it?โ€ I hadnโ€™t expected Ryan to actually make a deal with Edward. Guess young people really are impulsive.

โ€œThen donโ€™t let me regret it, okay?โ€ Ryan said with a smile, his eyes shining bright.

I felt a little embarrassed under his gaze and looked out the window.

I always thought Ryan was at some science and tech school, but he totally fooled meโ€“heโ€™s actually a star student at Eastbridge University, majoring in economics.

After we finished eating, I started clearing the table. Ryan wanted to help, but he ended up just standing there, watching me.

โ€œI canโ€™t let you stay the night,โ€ I said, glancing over at him as I finished tying up the trash.

โ€œI know, Iโ€™m not staying over,โ€ Ryan nodded.

I checked the time. โ€œItโ€™s almost nine-thirty. You should head back.โ€

โ€œLโ€ฆ I donโ€™t want to go back yet,โ€ Ryan said, his handsome face flushing with embarrassment.

Of course I knew what he wanted, but I just couldnโ€™t let things go any further between us.

โ€˜Heโ€™s still in college, he has no idea what it would really mean if things went that far,โ€™ I thought to myself.

โ€œVic, Iโ€ฆโ€ Ryan said, and after I washed my hands, he suddenly pulled me into a hug from behind.

My breath hitched, my chest heaving as my heart pounded.

โ€œRyanโ€ฆโ€ I murmured.

โ€œEver since last time, I just canโ€™t get it out of my head,โ€ Ryanโ€™s voice was low and rough. โ€œI know youโ€™re not ready to go all the way with me, and I wonโ€™t push you, butโ€ฆ could you give me a hand again, like you did before?โ€

Ryan was young and full of hormonesโ€“after that first time, he just couldnโ€™t get enough.

Before I could even react, my mind went completely blankโ€“his lips were already at the back of my neck, igniting a fire that made it impossible to think straight.

โ€œVic, please,โ€ he whispered, his voice hoarse and needy, nuzzling against my skin with a desperate tenderness.
