Chapter 458

I was here tonight to say goodbye, not to get swept up in all these feelings. But as soon as I reached out, he caught my hand in his large, warm grasp. The next moment, he pressed his cheek into my palm, closed his eyes, and murmured softly, โ€œVictoria, whatever you want me to do from now on, Iโ€™ll do it. Iโ€™ll listen to you.โ€

I was completely thrown off. Nathan tonight was all soft edges, unusually gentle.

โ€œDonโ€™tโ€ฆ donโ€™t do this,โ€ I stammered, my heart pounding with guilt and nerves. โ€œWhatever it is, big or small, you should decide for yourself.โ€

โ€œNope,โ€ Nathan shook his head. โ€œI want to be your loyal puppy.โ€

The serious mood was shattered by Nathanโ€™s childish words โ€“ I had to bite back a laugh.

โ€œNathan, are you still tipsy from lunch or something? Seriously, listen to yourself,โ€ I teased, trying to lighten the mood.

Nathan looked at me, a little hurt. โ€œVictoria, Iโ€™m being serious here. Why are you laughing at me?โ€

โ€œCome on, weโ€™re adults. Letโ€™s not talk like kids anymore,โ€ I said, getting up โ€“ didnโ€™t want him looking up at me like that. I walked over to the window and stared out at the crowd. โ€œIn the grown-up world, thereโ€™s no escaping money and status. Nathan, just keep chasing your dreams. Donโ€™t let anyone drag you down.โ€

Nathan nodded. โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll keep moving forward โ€“ and I want you running right beside me.โ€

I turned to look at him. โ€œYou donโ€™t need to worry about me. Just focus on your own path and run all the way to the top.โ€

โ€œVictoria, donโ€™t say that. If youโ€™re not with me, I wonโ€™t have the drive to keep going,โ€ Nathan said with a smile, stepping up to pull me into his arms. But I twisted away at the last second, smoothly dodging his embrace without making it obvious.

Nathan looked at his arm, frozen mid-air, and stared at me in bewilderment. โ€œVictoria, whatโ€™s wrong?โ€

Right as I was about to speak, a knock sounded at the door.

The waiter came in, pushing in a food cart.

โ€œAlright, letโ€™s eat and talk,โ€ Nathan said as the food was served. He took my hand and guided me back to our seats.

I looked at the table full of dishes heโ€™d ordered just for me, and my heart ached in ways I couldnโ€™t even put into words.

Nathan was trying so hard to get closer, but even though it hurt, all I could do was push him away.

I closed my eyes, feeling like I was stabbing myself in the heart. โ€˜Feeling sorry for a man? Thatโ€™s just a recipe for a lifetime of heartbreak,โ€™ I thought bitterly.

โ€œVictoria, try some beefโ€ฆโ€ I opened my eyes and saw heโ€™d slipped a piece of nicely browned beef into my bowl.

Nathan was reaching for my glass, ready to pour me some red wine.

I stopped him right away. โ€œI canโ€™t drink, I drove here.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Iโ€™ll take you home. I brought a driver,โ€ Nathan said, but he poured me half a glass anyway.

โ€œI really canโ€™t drink tonight,โ€ I insisted.

Nathan finally picked up on my mood. He laced his fingers together and pressed them to his lips, his eyes dark and searching as he looked at me. โ€œVictoria, whatโ€™s wrong? Why are you so distant tonight?โ€

I bit my lip and let out a quiet sigh.

โ€œDid something happen? Let me help you,โ€ Nathan said, his voice full of concern.

I shook my head. โ€œNothing like that.โ€

Nathanโ€™s unease deepened, and then he lowered his voice. โ€œDid you make some kind of deal with your ex-husband?โ€

I looked up at him, giving him a shocked look.

Nathan grabbed his glass, walked over to the window, and knocked it back in one go. โ€œDid you sign some deal with Mr. Holcomb just to help me out with the money?โ€

I froze, totally thrown. Why would Nathan think Iโ€™d still have anything going on with Jared?

โ€œVictoria, if youโ€™ve ever helped me, I want you to tell me. No matter what it is, I need to know,โ€ Nathan said as he came back to the table, leaning forward, his eyes tinged with red. โ€œI want to remember everything youโ€™ve done for me. I hate owing people, but with you, itโ€™s different. If I owe you, Iโ€™ll spend my whole life making it up to you โ€“ and I wonโ€™t ever regret it.โ€

I just sat there, lost for words, not sure how to respond.

Seeing me stay silent, Nathanโ€™s voice softened. โ€œOkayโ€ฆ can you talk to me now?โ€

Under the table, my fingers twisted together so tightly they hurt. With my heart aching, I finally steeled myself and said, โ€œNathan, letโ€™s break up.โ€
